Some people are stable like a pyramid. im more like a guyed mast. Intrinsically unstable, held stable under tension by powerful balancing forces. the tallest of me was in poland but collapsed in 1974
America has a weird relationship with cults where they’re terrified of small cults (or organizations they think are cults) but completely normalized massive cults that hurt many more people (eg: LDS Church, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Amish, Scientology, most Megachurches)
To anybody asking if the Amish are a cult, the answer is yes, very much so.
They’re a high control group that isolate you from society. The cult decides how you dress, how you behave, who you marry and how. They control what you know, blocking all information from the outside world. They control how you feel and what you’re allowed to think with threats of both social and supernatural harm. They’re a cult.
The best method to determine if a group is a cult, in my opinion, is Steven Hassan’s (cult expert and former cult member himself) BITE model.
BITE stands for Behavior Control, Information Control, Thought Control, and Emotional Control.
The more points a group “scores” on the model, the more of a cult it is.
I think this model is the best one for several reasons:
It’s more nuanced than “cult” or “not cult” and doesn’t make false equivalences between groups
It’s versatile, applying to groups big and small, and cults of all kinds, religious, political, financial, etc.
It focuses on what’s important, which is what the cult does to its members, and those members’ experiences, and not on irrelevant details like how uncommon their doctrines are or whether they have a charismatic leader
This is a great example of Thought Control used by cults whenever they’re confronted with criticism.
#you might notice that there are a lot of similarities between cult techniques and those of abusive partners#and that is an important thing to be aware of
yah that goes in the post
The creator of the BITE Model considers abusive relationships to be two-person cults.
It’s important to note that almost every sect of evangelical christianity in the US today fails the BITE Model.
This was the post that lead to breaking my JW mindset. Been a while since I seen it.
I’m glad I could help in your deconstruction, if only a little bit. I wish you all the luck in your journey moving forward.
And to highlight a key aspect of the “two-person cult” dynamic:
Not all high-control groups are religious. Secular cults exist.
I’d strongly recommend reading this brief bio of Janja Lalich. She’s a deprogramming therapist, but she’s also a cult survivor from a political cult.
high control groups can also form in friend groups and online! any social group can theoretically be a high control enviroment that’s abusive. any group can be a cult if someone uses that group to control and abuse others.
Real pupper is experiencing UNCANNY VALLEY bigtime!

Imagine if you encountered a humanoid like this in the forest, smiling and waving in a welcoming manner. You'd assume you were about to be abducted by aliens or perhaps fae.

as humiliating as it is to repost myself from a light-mode-user's reddit screenshot, i cannot allow this year's zenquish to go uncelebrated.
celebrate my favorite holiday with me, my friends.
if the emperors of rome can add extra months that actually fuck the calendar up i'm allowed to add a new month that lasts 0.0000 picoseconds
the last holiday that hasn't been commercialized
i made this up when i was a little kid and nothing would make me happier than to see people celebrating it for years to come
zenquish approaches. prepare to rejoice! briefly!
wow my tweet on my dash

something that i find very fascinating as far as project hail mary goes is this contrast between the book and the movie in portrayals of kindness and humanity. this is gonna get long, but it's been haunting me for like three weeks at this point so you're coming on this journey with me.
so phm, the book, is of course a story about hope, and humanity, and connection. but it's also a tragedy. it's about the stark reality of the situation it presents. obviously there's the mathematics, the physics, the hard numbers, but beyond that, there is a strong focus in the narrative on how dire it actually is to be on a planet when your star is dying. we have subplots focusing on a climatologist who is utterly haunted by the impending ecological collapse, which he himself is willingly complicit in worsening, and simultaneously on a man who is quite happy to be profiting off the destruction of a mind-bogglingly massive swathe of unique ecosystem. of course a movie can't contain every facet of a book with so many characters and narrative beats, but i find it interesting not just what the movie chose to cut, but what it chose to explicitly change.
phm, the movie, is not just about hope and humanity and connection, it's about love. it's about kindness. it's about the unspoken and wordless ways we make connections with one another, lessen the burdens of one another. and it does this via quiet visuals but also by blatantly defying things presented in its original source material. i wanna talk about those changes, why they work, why they so profoundly alter the tone and the overall feel of the story.

mooooon prism death ray!~
text: Manic Pixie Death Priest Powers
Imagine a character who is, like, 3 ghosts all trying to pilot one supernaturally preserved zombie. The zombie basically sweats ectoplasm from all the ghosts inside it, and that seems to keep it from decaying. Occasionally the zombie gets control (or they otherwise forget to "take the wheel") and they sometimes find themselves all sat comfortably in the scaffolding of a railroad bridge, watching the sunset or kicking their feet in a pond. As far as they can tell, there isn't a 4th ghost, so maybe it's? Just? The body doing that? Theyre not sure if this is something the previous... occupant?... just enjoyed doing, or if their presumed-undead vessel has started... un-undeading... from all the ghosts inside it...
Heh heh heh
When I need to remind myself to put something on the grocery list and I don't have my phone on me, I use the Scrabble tile magnets on the fridge. But sometimes I don't have enough of the right letters and have to get creative.
The list is getting longer and we are running out of letters.
I’ve been meaning to ask this for a while and I am sorry if it comes off oddly. How do you navigate an intelligence gap in a relationships? I have dated men of equivalent or greater intellect and found them inadequate in other ways, but when I have dated men less intelligent than me I become frustrated with them and their insecurities bleed into the relationship. You and Ship (or the personas you perform publicly) seem content. How do you avoid getting frustrated? [cont.]
"[part 2] I mean no insult to Ship of course. They seem very attentive and I used to really enjoy their detective skits. From the contents of your blogs they come across as so much less intellectually curious that it surprises me that you are compatible. Do you get adequate intellectual stimulation from other relationships/is that not a need for you in a partner/are my standards unrealistic?"
i have no idea how to respond to this. we have all been in absolutely helpless hysterics about it for the last thirty minutes. this is by far the most deranged ask I have received about my personal life on this website in my fifteen year career on here, and that is saying quite a lot
i can't decide which part of this message is my favorite, but if I HAD to say, probably the part where you appear to be entirely in earnest about this? in almost any other case I would assume a message like this was an elaborate way of insulting me or my partner or both, but I really genuinely don't think that's the case for you, which is actually MORE confusing. its just so compelling. there's so many layers here. i want to hire someone to cross stitch this for me so I can hang it in our living room. i can hear ship intermittently breaking out in peals of hysterical laughter in the kitchen
you can see on my heart rate monitor when I opened this ask and began laughing helplessly
“average person eats 3 spiders a year” factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

sometimes I look at my friends and I am just overwhelmed by the sheer luck of it. the universe is so violently massive and terrifyingly empty, but somehow, against all odds, my brand of weird gravity pulled in your brand of weird gravity. we are just ghosts haunting the same corner of the internet, sharing a brain cell, and keeping each other tethered to the earth.
