I think maybe the most unbelievable part about Project Hail Mary (book+movie) is that Ryland Grace, the cool teacher, the guy who makes friends with absolutely everyone he meets if he can, who notoriously insulted the powers that be in his field, who is otherwise consistently kind and polite, who wears nerdy t shirts, is extremely smart, has a great sense of humor (and in the movie looks like Ryan Gosling)... doesn't have any friends prior to the mission. Specifically doesn't have any ride-or-die besties prior to Rocky. What's wrong with the entire rest of the population of planet Earth.
