I also feel like people get really defensive about these terms getting used interchangeably because they wrap up a lot of identity in them conceptually, whereas in kink communities it's more commonly used to describe actions and relationships? idk if that's a coherent thought, kinda straight off the dome, but there is a Lot of Nuance to be had in the conversation that gets left out...

No you are totally right, this is what I meant about being "normal" about sex. Equating preferred roles in sexual roleplay to personality isn't a kink thing, it's a fandom thing. Bottom in kink isn't really about penetration, it's about which role you take on in sexual roleplay. I can tell you from personal experience on both sides it is much, much easier to establish the correct feeling of roleplay dominance when you are the one physically directing the action, which is easier to do when you are *literally on top* and can therefore move. That is why the terms mean what they mean.

These are practical terms used to talk about practical sex. The real irony is that topping does not actually mean penetrating and bottoming does not mean receiving penetration. That is not how the terms are actually used. A woman riding cowgirl is being penetrated but is topping. Because she is on top. Literally. That matters more.
