linguistics nerds 🤝 chemistry nerds
not immediately thinking of beer upon seeing "IPA"
maybe we should stop calling things “grammatically correct” and start calling them “grammatically normative”
Tips for Linguists
Never try to teach a syntactician to address sociolinguistic context; it wastes your time and it annoys the syntactician.

A conculture that can understand ideas inexpressible in its native conlang, because the conlang has no word for “Sapir-Whorf.”

Dear People of the World,
I don’t mean to upset your belief in your own superiority, but please understand that everyone who speaks a language is using grammar.
Sincerely,
Linguistics
speaker at a tech talk just pronounced github as "jithub", I'm shaken
when that happens in a conversation I just have to stubbornly pretend I didn’t hear it, as if they’d had a microstroke and no longer had any conversational boundaries to what they say.

reminder that calling a native speaker’s english grammatically incorrect is one of the biggest ways older white people express casual racism sexism and ageism

ENGLISH HAS FIXED WORD ORDER AND CASE MARKING IS LARGELY OBSOLETE.
(Blame the Normans. Also the Danes. Hell, blame the Anglo-Saxons while you’re at it since it was them showing up and forcing the Britons to switch to Anglo-Saxon that started the whole thing. Look English has a fucking weird history that involves constantly being conquered and forced to speak a new language or mish-mash until they got so tired of this that they decided to turn around, build an amazing navy and do it to everyone else instead, leading to global violence and conquest and just about everything we’re struggling with today.)
