Police Officer: Sir this is destruction of public property

Steve: They just got upset because I broke all seven of the sets of handcuffs they tried to put me in. Apparently that counts as ‘resisting arrest’.

Tony: And why exactly where you being arrested in the first place, Cap?

Steve: …well that might’ve been because i destroyed thousands of dollars’ worth of anti-homeless architecture omw to the bank. Maybe.

Tony: Hi May! So, this isn’t what it looks like.

May: So you and my nephew weren’t arrested for taking off the bars from over a dozen benches, as well as taking out several other instances of hostile architecture?

Tony: Okay, so it’s exactly what it sounds like actually.

May, tearing up: Baby’s first act of civil disobedience!

Peter, no longer using Tony as a human shield: Wow, that went better than I thought it would.

Tony: Don’t relax just yet Pete, because we still forgot to tell-

Steve, stomping around the corner: You guys lEFT ME AT HOME!

Tony: -him.

because, like, that’s the seldom-portrayed romantic dream in the patriarchal hellscape that is our world, isn’t it?

a dude being willing to say, “i understand if you don’t feel the same way about me, and i’ll leave you alone forever about this if my attention is unwanted.”

The next day, he surprises her on her walk. He hands her a letter, asks that she read it, and then takes off.

When this happened to me after I had turned someone down IN REAL LIFE, the letter contained a passionate argument to the tune of “actually you’re wrong and you do like me and you should go out with me” and it was creepy af.

Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth starts with: “Be not alarmed, Madam, on receiving this letter, by the apprehension of its containing any repetition of those sentiments, or renewal of those offers, which were last night so disgusting to you”. He goes on to set the record straight about the stuff he didn’t do (as well as the stuff he did) which is *actually relevant* to Elizabeth. And he, as promised, doesn’t romance her further.

Darcy’s second proposal: “One word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”

His whole arc in the book is about learning to consider other people’s feelings and not just his own, but the fact that it’s expressed via who gets to talk and who is told to shut up is so, so telling. The first time around, he imposes his voice on her whether she wants it or not. The second time, he asks how she feels, and in exchange, offers her the gift of his silence.

men: You dumb bitch. You absolute idiot. THIS is what you like. I think I would know better than you???

“i couldn’t help it, i was having a bad episode” is a justification, not an apology.

“i’m so fucking sorry, i fucked up, i don’t deserve to live, i should stop talking to anyone ever, i should die” is a second breakdown and a guilt trip. it is not an apology.

when you apologize, the focus should be on the person you hurt. “i’m sorry. i did something that was hurtful to you. even if i was having a rough time, you didn’t deserve to hear that,” is a better apology. if it was a small thing, you can leave it at that.

if you caused significant distress to the other person, this is a good time to talk about how you can minimize damage in the future. and again, even if it is tempting to say you should self-isolate and/or die, that is not a helpful suggestion. it will result in the person you’re talking to trying to talk you out of doing that, which makes your guilt the focus of the conversation instead of their hurt.
