I feel like when you make UI changes to an existing product, there should always be a step where you take some regular-degular users of the product who do NOT work for you or have any internal knowledge of the product that they didn't gain through casual use, sit them at computers or phones or whatever, and physically look at them with your real actual eyeballs to see what buttons they press to interact with your site and what parts they interact with. NO theory going in, observation first: what are the users actually physically doing with their hands and eyes, and why, and how frequently, and how ingrained are these habits. THEN you start theorising changes.
