You know, unnamed handler who named and shamed Larry and who obviously needs a little bit of a refresher on leadership, when a new hire isn't meeting the expected standard, that should be considered a management issue with onboarding, training, and documentation of workflow.
As described, Larry is behaving in the way that you and your long-time associate are modeling while you're working. You're making species-based assumptions about the reasons and are not providing feedback to the trainee directly, just shit-talking their work to the media.
That is unacceptable behavior from anyone, but especially from a team leader.
