154) Strange things start happening when a mysterious and ghostly fog rolls into a small coastal town exactly 100 years after a ship sank with all the men onboard. An eerie atmosphere, a spooky little town and an old tale of stolen gold, The Fog combines brilliantly these elements to deliver 90 minutes of constant tension. John Carpenter has never been satisfied with the final result due to some reshooting and issues with the production, despite that this is still a masterful work that needs to be shown to modern filmmakers to make them understand how to direct a horror movie without having a big budget. 150) A couple travels to Sweden to visit a rural hometown's mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre pagan tradition. Ari Aster’s previous work was Hereditary, a harrowing journey through grief and sorrow which revealed itself as one of the best suspenseful horror movies in the last decade. The story of Midsommar explores the same themes but through different narrative elements (paintings and iconographies) and settings (open green fields); besides it deals with Swedish folklore, pagan cults and ancient runes. While the blinding imagery is a peculiar characteristic, although unusual for a horror film, the story disappoints in many aspects without sounding really compelling as time passes by. The second half is too filled with a series of allegorical scenes that feel so disconnected from each other, leading to a disorienting ending. Florence Pugh does a tremendous as the main protagonist: when she’s grieving her performance is staggering, even though the director seems to forget about her in the third act of the movie. By the way the production design and the practical special effects look amazing: gruesome scenes perfectly edited and an hypnotic direction provide more than just shivers. 146) After being expelled from Cannes Film Festival a few years ago for his outrageous declarations, Lars Von Trier comes back at the most prestigious cinematic manifestation with another extreme movie. The House That Jack Built follows the story of a psycho serial killer who sees murder as a different way of perceiving forms of art. When he kills someone it’s important for him to experiment and achieve something different every time. Even though the film is very brutal and vicious, the violence is justified by the message that the director wants to communicate. The “infernal” journey inside our main character’s mind symbolizes Von Trier’s personality: continues phobias, women as victims and the research of new forms of art, everything is perfectly in tone with its filmography. Red color - symbol of blood and devil - is the “leitmotif” of the story, taking different shapes throughout the five acts of the story. Moreover the pace is handled perfectly by the danish director: he decides when to push the story towards the horror or when to satisfy our “thirst” of culture. 145) Il Primo Re by Matteo Rovere marks a strong decision for italian genre movies. After a few successful sales in the past years like Veloce come il Vento or Lo Chiamavano Jeeg Robot, this is a risky investment with its 8 million euro budget. Two brothers, Romulus and Remus, will have to rely on each other to survive in a hostile world. The city of Rome, one of the greatest empires in history, will be born from their deeds and their blood. Led by a terrific performance by Alessandro Borghi and acted completely in an archaic latin, Il Primo Re is definitely one of the most ambitious projects of italian cinema in most recent years. It’s very easy to relate it to The Revenant by Iñárritu: blood, mud and tears envelope the entire film, moreover the immersive spirit of the language and a gritty approach guarantee a hell of an experience. Despite a central redundant section in which the pace feels dragged on, this retelling of the Romulus and Remus myth works pretty well. In terms of action sequences, some of them are quite confusing except for the final epic one in which the prophecy becomes true. A film that could be easily sold abroad for european countries. 144) Security guard David Dunn uses his supernatural abilities to track Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has twenty four personalities. They are captured and sent to a mental institution where Elijah Price (Mr. Glass), David’s sworn enemy is being held. The final chapter of this newborn superhero trilogy completes the circle of M. Night Shyamalan’s idea about comic books. In doing so, he parodies and pays homage to the genre in the best possible way, deconstructing the myth of the superhero but at the same time glorifying it. In “Glass” Samuel L. Jackson is the one that stole the show; his character is very complex but also straightforward in terms of what he wants to achieve with his actions. A real “God” of intuition and wisdom, who pursue his plan since the first movie. McAvoy and Willis do a great job too, in two of their most iconic roles. There are a few terrific scenes that elevate the whole movie, Shyamalan gets better and better as time goes by. Particularly, the editing and sound editing are very good, so that the pace of the movie proceeds in a linear with a few essential flashbacks. The accuracy of the screenplay does the rest. While the first final twist felt like the only thing that has been done rushed, the final one is very satisfying to see. The director concludes the trilogy in the best possible way, through meta cinema (for the audience) and a big homage to all the comic books and superheroes that have been and still are inspiring people. 143) 🌟 Paths of Glory was directed by none other than the master Stanley Kubrick back in 1957. It was based on Humphrey Cobb’s novel of the same name: set during the First World War, on the frontline between Germany and France, when a battalion of soldiers refuse to attack an enemy position, clearly it would have been a suicide mission. But general accuses them of cowardice and their commanding officer must defend them. Surely this isn’t one of the most remembered movies in his filmography, but it’s a remarkably piece of art that shows the hideous aspects of war and provides a thorough illustration of the amorality of high ranking officials towards their soldiers, who were treated like mere pawns. Kubrick, with this project, established himself as one of the promising directors of the next decades. The way he used to combine form with substance every time is just stupefying. To start, all the characters shown in the story are well written, it’s easy to understand that each action of each character will have his outcomes throughout the length of the film. The slow burning pace of the second act is essential to the audience to comprehend the feelings of the agonizing innocent soldiers sentenced to death by the hypocrisy of the martial authorities. Kubrick began to show his arsenal of cinematic skills: backtracking with the camera, shots in perspective, the use of shadow and light to underline the touching moments, when hopes and dreams are lost. A sudden glimpse of joy comes when a young german woman starts singing, but the immediate return to the front is nothing but inevitable. I have a feeling that we needed more stuff from Kubrick. 142) Bohemian Rhapsody was directed by Bryan Singer and stars Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, the legendary leader of Queen, one of the most successful rock bands of all time. When it comes to biopics it’s always hard to narrate a real story without being accused of forgiving important aspects of the real person portrayed on the screen, or something like: “ You should’ve done it this way!” Bryan Singer had the chance to direct a movie about one of the most beloved artists in the world, and he absolutely crafted a really good and pure entertaining flick (even though he didn’t have the possibility to finish his job). To start, Rami Malek was perfect as Freddie Mercury, showing all of his charisma onstage and in the intimate moments of his life with his girlfriend, boyfriend and the band. Leaving out the most scandalous aspects could’ve seen as a way to please wide audiences, but actually the pacing results perfect from beginning to end, because it’s clear that Singer wanted to remember Mercury as a great singer and not for his shenanigans. This wasn’t meant to be a biopic about that, but two hours of fun recounting the good old days of the band. Besides, the choice of the songs and the camera work grab your attention from the very beginning, as you feel so invested in the characters. Sometimes the love stories felt a little bit cheesy, but that’s almost irrelevant because there was so much iron in the fire, so it’s really to difficult to handle so many scenes for a two hour movie. In the end, Bohemian Rhapsody is a total cinematic experience that I recommend to anyone who loves Queen, clearly it’s not a masterpiece with artistic values but sometimes it’s really great to turn back the clock and imaging being among thousands and thousands of fans raising their hands towards the sky, chanting “We Will Rock You”. It came out in theaters in the USA and on Netflix in the rest of the world and it’s based on the first chapter of a trilogy written by Jeff VanderMeer. When her husband returns home in a coma state, a biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition into a mysterious zone called The Shimmer. Everyone that enters the area didn’t make it, except for his husband. Definitely one of the finest flicks distributed by the popular streaming service, even though I think that on a big screen it would have had a much bigger impact. That being said Annihilation is a type of sci-fi that is open to multiple interpretations; Garland decided to narrate the story through an essential script but with compelling characters and, more importantly, stunning visuals. The special effects play a big role, since they create this peculiar almost mystique atmosphere that surrounds the wilderness. Although sometimes the film is quite a bit unwieldy, the fascinating aspects overwhelm the weakest parts: the philosophical connection between biology and psychology, human impulses, the destruction of the nature that will lead to a final “resurrection”. 138) In a dystopian near future, single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or are transformed into animals and sent off into The Woods. The premises of this project are absolutely unusual and very creative, although a little bit surreal; it’s the first English language movie by greek director Yorgos Lanthimos and it stars Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and Lea Seydoux. We are immediately immersed into the story by this cold, magnetic cinematography that really embraces each scene; Lanthimos decides to focus entirely on the characters, with slow pace and a leitmotif soundtrack that rises the level of the drama. This whole dystopian world can be seen as a metaphor of our society: we are always looking for someone to be by our side, in fact loneliness leads to mental issues and eventually to suicide. This film explores multiple themes in a surrealist, heartless and almost nihilistic way, and Lanthimos proves to be a hell of a director. By the way the second act of the film is very repetitive and I feel that it adds many unnecessary aspects that feel rushed, or at least not as exhaustive as the first part in The Hotel. The ending is a punch in the stomach, but feels totally out of place in this case. I encourage you to watch The Lobster because it’s a very original dystopian drama, even if there are some issues it’s still a remarkable movie. 137) An immortal, groundbreaking masterpiece of the late 60’s, which inspired a long list of horror classics. Rosemary’s Baby was Roman Polanski’s first American production, it’s the transposition of the novel by Ira Levin and back at the time it surely made a great impact upon the American audience. A young couple moves into an apartment only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and strange occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins to control her life. From the very first scene we immediately feel a sense of paranoia that will later unfold as the events go on; in fact, that panoramic shot combined with that spooky lullaby sung by the main actress, Mia Farrow, helps to set the tone of the story. The length of the film is perfectly balanced between couple drama, horror and incredible narration by Polanski. The skillful director knows always how and where to put the camera, as the 80% of the movie is set inside an apartment I never felt annoyed. Instead, thanks to impeccable performances by Mia Farrow and the rest of the cast, the psychological tension increases minute by minute. We share the point of view of the protagonist, her paranoia makes the audience question what is really going on until the end, and this helps the story to be compelling as ever. When it comes to social commentary the film is pretty much straightforward; the burden of a pregnant middle-class woman depicts a sense of impotence of the female in the society that still affects our world today. An excess of trust can cause a lot of trouble, and even your closest people would do everything for capitalism. Moreover, we follow the pregnancy of Mia Farrow as a sort of “journey to hell”. The finale scenes are handled in the most clever way possible. As we always have the perspective of our main character, the climax triggers multiple feelings - the soundtrack plays a big role in this case - : from terror to astonishment, from disgust to pain. 136) Could a horror flick be groundbreaking as The Exorcist was in the ‘70s? Hereditary was written and directed by the youngster Ari Aster, and this film created a lot of buzz at winter festivals because of the fact that both critics and audience came out of the theatre shocked and terrified. The film was immediately compared to the masterful The Exorcist by William Friedkin, and the mysterious halo behind the trailer surely confirmed that this wasn’t going to be a canonical horror of our time. Despite some narrative issues and a not always linear screenplay, Hereditary is a phenomenal work of art of tension, scares and agony; a masterfully crafted feature that employ several techniques to horrify and build up suspense. The plot is quite simple: after the family matriarch passes away, a grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences, and begin to reveal dark secrets. As soon as the film began I realized that this rookie is extremely talented and perfectly knows where to put the camera. He decided to focus entirely on the characters, in fact it’s a slow pace narration that never felt annoying because the performances were really good. There are two sequences that are mind-blowing in the way they are thought, with a skillful use of montage and out of shot. Aster creates suspense by not showing to you directly what happened but through the montage and the look of the actors, who are simply incredible here. Toni Collette in particular stands out as a possible Oscar nominee, she portrays her character in such a realistic way, a mother who’s been through a lot of hardships. Also Alex Wolff is impeccable, his character is the most tormented and he’s going to give you shivers every time he’s on screen. But the little Milly Shapiro probably captured the collective imagination, because she’s going to be remembered for this role in Hereditary. 135) Honestly I’ve never been a huge fan of what concerns superheroes and graphic novels, but I do appreciate some of the films that came out from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in particular: the first Iron Man, Dr. Strange and the two Guardians of the Galaxy. So since I’m not into this type of movies, I try to watch it as a mere blockbuster that has no other purpose but to entertain the audience with action sequences and fun characters. Avengers: Infinity War is the nineteenth movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the ongoing project that began in 2008 with Iron Man has established a new way of thinking cinema through common universe, and surely it has been an influence for other companies. But does this one live up to the high expectations? No. At least, the villain Thanos, interpreted by Josh Brolin is the best aspect of the film, but the rest of the cast seemed thrown in aimlessly. If you’re not a fan of a Marvel and you just want have some fun you can’t! Because you should have seen all the previous eighteen movies, thus the plot doesn’t exist for you. The writers must’ve thought about that. The script is always filled with unnecessary (and in the long run annoying) jokes, and some characters made some stupid decisions that I couldn’t believe. Along with the CGI, Thanos is easily the strength of the story, his purpose is so believable that you almost root for him. The finale tries to be epic, but the cheesy moments that involve different characters make the ending too predictable. I’m not talking about who dies, but the narrative choice with a cliffhanger seemed to obvious for a movie divided in two. I have to wait the second part to pronounce my final judgement, but I don’t understand why every time a Marvel flick comes out, critics are ready to glorify it. For me seeing it once was enough. Sci-fi thrills blended with brilliant ideas and strong criticism - especially of Reagan government - , They Live is now more than ever a modern documentary about contemporary society. It was written and directed by John Carpenter who, after unexpected disaster at the box office with Big Trouble in Little China, returned with a small budget of 3 millions to direct one of his most iconic films. John Nada a construction worker, discovers a pair of sunglasses. Wearing them he’s able to see the world as it really is: people being bombarded by media and government, and some usually normal people actually are aliens. He will try to show people the truth. They Live is considered a cult among the cinema goers; even though it’s not probably Carpenter’s best work, it’s still today very powerful in its message regarding media, politics and the upper middle society. We live in a world where unrestrained capitalism leads to depression, because you keep thinking about business, about making money. In all of this, while the majority of the population is trying to make a living, we are bombed everywhere with unrelenting advertising by multinationals, who are convincing you to buy their products. So we tend to forget about real values and what is truly important in real life. Carpenter showed all of this in 1988: although the acting isn’t exceptional, the screenplay is pretty basic and the technical aspects are not as impressive as other works; great ideas lead to good messages, which means great cinema! If you wish to know there’s also an incredible fight scene between Keith David and Roddy Piper. So despite those evident imperfections, I still want to give it the maximum rating. In Justine’s family everyone is a vet and a vegeterian. At 16 she’s ready to take on her first year in a vet school, where her older sister also studies. There she gets no time to settle, because hazing rituals start immediately and she’s forced to eat raw meat for the first time in her life. Since then everything won’t be the same for her. In the last years nothing ever hit me so hard like this jaw-dropping debut film by this talented french female director. It’s a much more complex story than it looks by only reading the title, why is it so? Because it exploits a horror subgenre like cannibal movies to create a story about growing, self discovery and family. Moreover its grossly imagery, its excellent makeup, the performances and the great use of music couldn’t help but elevate this movie as a top notch in terms of cinematic experience. Analyzing the relationship between Justine and his family, she has the strongest bond with his sister, who reveals herself both as mentor and troublemaker. We won’t discover the truth till the final shot, which is undeniably a punch in the stomach for the viewer. In the end this film takes us through an examination of identity, sexuality and the thin line between the human and animal, and it does so in such an original way. 131) A Tom Hardy-type of role for Vince Vaughn, gruesome action sequences combined with magnetic performances and here it is a below the radar movie from last year. Brawl in Cell Block 99 is the second feature film directed by S. Craig Zahler, who proves once again to be a hell of talent in elaborating conventional stories like westerns and in this case involving drug dealers, and fill them with great, refreshing ideas. The plot is really simple: a former boxer becomes a drug dealer to make a living for his pregnant wife, but when a deal gets deadly he’s imprisoned and he will have to face multiple adversities from now on. I’ve always liked Vince Vaughn character in random movies, and now I can definitely say that this is his best role by far. His performance is incredibly suitable for a large sized former boxer, he alternates sweet moments with his wife and crazy fist fights with other prisoners. He always maintains that calm attitude that you can’t help but rooting for him from the beginning. Moreover, his appearance recalls Tom Hardy in Bronson, which is probably a clear inspiration for this film by Zahler. Next, in terms of realism he did an outstanding job, that I almost felt like I was there with the characters. Particularly the cell scenes are perfectly directed, you really get that sense of claustrophobia and discomfort you would expect from the title. But actually what really stands out are the fight scenes: they start when you don’t expect them to explode, and this helps to create high tension. Extreme violence, bloody limbs, smashed faces, ripped bones... I swear I was pretty challenged by that gruesomeness. Lastly, the screenplay is really solid, because all of the actions we see are perfectly explainable, also we get emotionally invested enough to root for the protagonist even though he’s committed to criminality. I highly recommend it and I just can’t wait to watch it again as soon as possible! The twelve year old Oskar is a lonely boy who’s bullied by his classmates, one night he befriends with Eli a mysterious little girl who appears only at night outside their building. Now if were expecting to watch a horror movie when you heard about vampires, you must forget about it because this is another type of story. Alfredson here adds something new to a really old genre, and he does that through the eyes of a child and his path to maturity. He explores his fears, his first impossible love, his relationship with his divorced parents. He focuses entirely on the characters, he doesn’t almost show the outside of this neighbourhood in Stockholm, because he wants us to feel for them. The little actors are simply phenomenal, their chemistry is so pure that I almost forgot that I was watching them on a screen. The use of camera is perfect, along with the cinematography that helps to create a strange, snowy, uncomfortable atmosphere. One issue that I can pinpoint is that the bullies are only useful to show Oskar’s growth whether it’s positive or negative, even though the final scene is tremendously dramatic but at the same time heartwarming. In the end Let The Right One In is a coming of age drama that deeply explores the horrors of being different and lonely.
