How The Cross Proves Your Value “Come to the Lord, the living stone rejected by people as worthless but chosen by God as valuable” (1 Peter 2:4 GNT). God says that not only are you accepted; you’re also valuable! How much do you think you’re worth? I’m not talking about your net worth; I’m talking about your self-worth. Don’t ever confuse your valuables with your value as a person. You can be rich or poor, but it has nothing to do with your value as a person. Two things determine value in life: 1. Value is what someone is willing to pay for something. 2. Value depends on who has owned something in the past. Based on these two things, what’s your value? Ask yourself, “Who owns me?” and “What was paid for me?” The Bible says, “You have been bought and paid for by Christ, so you belong to him” (1 Corinthians 7:23a TLB). You belong to God, and Jesus paid for you with his life. The Cross proves your value. Nobody has ever paid a greater ransom than God paid for you! You’re acceptable, and you’re valuable. Peter uses the imagery of a building project to illustrate our value. God is building this stone building that represents the Church, the family of God, and you’re one of the stones. “Come to the Lord, the living stone rejected by people as worthless” (1 Peter 2:4a TEV). Jesus is the living stone. He was perfect, but some people still rejected him. Some of you may think, “If I could just be perfect, then I would be accepted.” No! Jesus was perfect, but even he wasn’t accepted by everyone. But he was “chosen by God as valuable.” God is building his Church, but it’s not found in temples or church buildings. God lives in people, and you are his spiritual house. Peter says that you’re a living stone. You Already Have God's Acceptance Most of us spend our entire lives trying to earn acceptance. We want to earn it from our parents, peers, partners in life, people we respect, and even people we envy. The desire to be accepted drives us to do all kinds of things. It can influence the kind of clothes you wear, the kind of car you drive, the kind of house you buy, even the career you choose. Would you agree that people do the craziest things to be accepted? As a kid you wanted so badly to be in the in-crowd that someone would say to you, “I dare you to do this,” and you’d do something stupid. You did it because your desire to be accepted overruled the desire for personal safety in your life. When you played baseball as a kid and teams were chosen, remember how great it felt to be picked by the best player? Remember how bad you felt when they got down to the last two or three and you still weren’t chosen? We love the feeling of being accepted. Being chosen does tremendous things for your self-esteem. The Bible says in 1 Peter 2:9, “You are a chosen people” (NIV). That ought to raise your self-esteem! Christ has accepted you — not based on your performance, something that you earned, or something that you deserve. God simply says, “I chose you.” You may have accepted Jesus into your life, but have you ever realized that Christ has accepted you? You don’t have to earn it; you don’t have to prove yourself. “Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will take care of me” (Psalm 27:10 GW). The fact is, some of you had parents whom you could never please. No matter what you did, it wasn’t good enough. If you got Cs, they wanted Bs. If you got Bs, they wanted As. If you got As, they wanted straight As. The tragedy is that some of you today are still trying to prove yourself to your parents. You’re still trying to earn their acceptance, but in all likelihood, you’re not going to get their approval if they haven’t given it to you by now, because that’s their problem. The good news is this: You don’t need it to be happy! There are 6 billion people in the world. If two people don’t like you, who cares? As a part of God’s family, you have been accepted by God!

The Cross Is Your Conclusion "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32) Let me pose a question to you today: If the cross is our context for how we relate to God, shouldn't it create the conclusion we come to in how we relate to others? In other words, if the basis of my relationship with God is that He had to die and shed his blood for my sins — if that's what it took for me to be right with God — shouldn't that be enough for me to be right with others? Just as God's grace was freely given to you, so should you freely give it to others. I don't know the specifics of your struggle today. It could be a small disagreement with a friend or a crisis that's threatening your life. But here's what I do know: Christ is enough. Embrace Your New Identity "Your name will no longer be Jacob . . . From now on you will be called Israel” (Genesis 32:28a NLT, second edition). You don’t have to stay the same! In conversion, we’re given a new identity. Look at Jacob in the book of Genesis. Once he confesses his manipulative behavior, God gives him a new identity. Notice three things happen: God gives Jacob a brand-new identity (Genesis 32:28). Essentially, God says, “I know you’ve blown it; I know you’re conniving, but I see in you a prince — beneath all your emotional hang-ups, all your insecurities, all the stuff you don’t want anybody else to know.” God is saying that today to many of us: “Beneath all of your sins and hang-ups, I see a princess/prince. You can be something great. You can be what I made you to be.” God blesses Jacob/Israel (Genesis 32:29). Deep down, we desperately want God’s blessing. And if we want God’s blessing, we have to take the steps God requires of us. God gave Jacob/Israel a limp (Genesis 32:31). Remember, when they wrestled, God dislocated Jacob’s hip. Jacob’s limp served as a daily reminder to depend upon God. God does his deepest work in your life when he deals with your identity — the person you truly are and the way you see yourself. You will always tend to act according to the way you think about yourself. So God does his deepest changes in your life by changing the way you see yourself.
