Ok, today is the solar return of Stanley Kubrick 26th-of 2026! So I'll run a few quotes and visuals from the extended essay on Stanley Kubrick.

I go into the question of whether Kubrick used astrology as a tool to thematically align his actors like chess pieces on a chess board, and whether he deliberately did hundreds of takes to 'break' them to get a better more authentic emotion from them?

Most people think the difference between Stephen King’s The Shining and Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation comes down to “the book vs the movie.”

But the real divide runs much deeper.

One story burns. The other freezes.

King’s novel is built around fire: rage, addiction, guilt, memory, destruction, and the terrifying possibility of redemption. The Overlook is alive, emotional, unstable, and hungry.

Kubrick’s film turns everything cold.

Ice. Silence. Isolation. Emotional detachment. A maze with no center and no escape. Redemption is stripped away until all that remains is inevitability.

The result is two completely different visions of horror created from the same foundation.

This documentary explores the hidden fire vs. ice symbolism inside The Shining, why Stephen King hated Kubrick’s adaptation, how the endings completely change the meaning of the story, and why this conflict may be the key to understanding both versions.

It is perhaps cinema history’s greatest “what if.” In his newly published memoirs, Al Pacino reflects on the ghost that haunted his career—the dream of playing Napoleon Bonaparte, a dream that almost converged with Stanley Kubrick’s grandest obsession.

Between 1967 and 1970, fresh off *2001: A Space Odyssey*, Kubrick dove into preparation for what was meant to be the definitive film on Napoleon. It wasn’t just pre-production; it was an acts of fanatical research. 🎞️

Kubrick didn’t just want to tell a story; he wanted to reconstruct history. To do this, he created a massive analog database—a legendary file cabinet filled with over **15,000 index cards** (swipe to see our visual tribute to this archive 👉). These cards tracked the daily whereabouts of Napoleon and key historical figures throughout their lives. He knew what the weather was like during specific battles and what the emperor ate for breakfast.

Costumes were prototyped, Romanian army divisions were secured as extras, and a young, intense Al Pacino—possessing the perfect age and temperament—was in Kubrick’s sights for the lead role. Pacino writes that Kubrick saw Napoleon as a man “obsessed with details, much like Stanley himself.”

A brilliant interpretation that is still being studied by today's audience and a significant departure from the literary classic.
