My autism comes up in conversation because it affects how I see things, hear things, feel things, taste things, smell things, think things, interpret things, perceive things, and on and on and on and on. My entire existence is influenced by my autism, because it's the reason why my brain is the way it is.

You know what else contributes to how traumatic emotional abuse is? The fact that people think it's not real or at least it's not as bad as physical abuse.
"Emotional abuse may be the most damaging form of maltreatment due to causing damage to a childâs developing brain affecting their emotional and physical health as well as their social and cognitive development." Specifically, emotional abuse causes physical damage to the brain and nervous system. It "causes changes in the brain, specifically in regions associated with understating and controlling emotions and recognizing and responding to the feelings of others. Their study found thinning in the tissue of the brain that helps with self-awareness and emotional regulation, particularly in the prefrontal cortex and medial temporal lobe."
"Neuropathologists have seen overlapping effects of physical and emotional trauma upon the brain. With such an overlap it can be seen that both of these traumas have a detrimental effect upon the Amygdala, the Hippocampus and the Prefrontal cortex of the brain. Meaning that Emotional Trauma... does indeed result in brain injury/damage."
Further "research indicates that the resulting mental health problems are similar regardless of whether the maltreatment is physical, psychological, sexual, emotional, or some combination." Additionally, "psychological child abuse can be particularly devastating for those victimized by their parents."
Researchers who used the National Child Traumatic Stress Network Core Data Set to examine outcomes found that "children who had been psychologically abused suffered from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, symptoms of post-traumatic stress and suicidality at the same rate and, in some cases, at a greater rate than children who were physically or sexually abused."
Studies show that "emotional abuse (EA) was associated with suicidal ideation and attempts, mainly for serious suicide attempts."
We know that emotional abuse causes (C)PTSD and acts as a compounding factor on other forms of abuse. We know that the symptoms of (C)PTSD have a significant overlap with those of physical TBI (traumatic brain injury).
Studies on grief have provided strong evidence of emotional TBI and that "both physical and emotional TBI have systemic effects due to hormonal and inflammatory mediators, including changes in proinflammatory cytokine levels, immune cell function, and heart rate variability."
"Oh so mommy yelled at you?"
Emotional abuse is so much more than yelling. It's control, verbal degradation, violating boundaries, gaslighting that destroys a person's ability to trust their own experiences and reality, and putting someone through such convoluted manipulation and mind games that it damages their brain.
But even if it were "just" mommy yelling at you?
"Being frequently yelled at changes the mind, brain and body in a multitude of ways including increasing the activity of the amygdala (the emotional brain), increasing stress hormones in the blood stream, increasing muscular tension and more," and "when fear, for example, is repeatedly triggered by a harsh environment, like one where there is a lot of yelling, automatic physical and emotional reactions occur that cause traumatic stress to a child."
Yelling at children causes low self-esteem, increases anxiety and depression, creates lasting fear responses, contributes to behavioral issues, hinders brain development, and even harms physical health.
"When an individual is subjected to yelling, their body enters a state of heightened stress. The adrenaline and cortisol levels in their system rise, leading to a fight-or-flight response." Once someone has developed PTSD, "Yelling can serve as a powerful trigger for individuals with PTSD, reigniting their traumatic memories and plunging them into a state of overwhelming distress... This triggers a cascade of emotions and physiological responses, further entrenching their symptoms and impeding their ability to cope," so it perpetuates and reinforces through compounding trauma.
we're always reminded of our young friend who said once "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words make me think I deserve it"
This makes me think back to high school when a schoolmate was doing anonymous surveys for a project about abuse. I started to fill one out. No, I had never been abused, I answered confidently. No one had ever hit me. As I continued through the survey, read the definitions of verbal, emotional, and financial abuse, I had a quiet realisation. I went back to that schoolmate and said, "I need another survey paper."

Reblog to hug prev poster (they need a hug)
my stance on the trans athlete debate is always and forever going to be that sports should be completely desegregated because humans have one of the smallest levels of sexual dimorphism in the animal kingdom and the disparity we see between male and female performance is entirely caused by social factors rather than anything biological. âshould trans women compete against cis womenâ i think cis men and cis women could compete fairly but thatâs apparently a little too spicy for people to wrap their minds around bc theyâve been told their whole lives women are biologically inferior & never thought to question that. or wonder if itâs maybe a self fulfilling prophecy of some kind. are women biologically inferior or do they appear so because patriarchy demands that of us?
I overheard a woman at my job say "Your whole personality revolves around what you hate instead of what you love and thats an awful way to live." to the resident vocal Maga in the breakroom.
He was stunned into silence for at least 60 seconds so that was nice.
the amount of vitriolic replies to this post makes me want to analyze why people react so angrily to having an unhealthy behavior being pointed out to them.
You cannot grow without accepting the problem

I hate the cosmetic surgery industry for so many reasons I really do. But the line between cosmetic and medically necessary plastic surgeries is as a cloud, and we cannot sacrifice bodily autonomy for bans so. We need to dismantle white supremacy and the patriarchy in order to effectively tackle the issue. I should be able to get elective top surgery without medicalising my transness you get?
I had a breast reduction when I was 16. I was so top heavy that my back had started spasming badly by the time I was 12, if I hadnât been able to get my reduction, I wouldâve been in more extreme pain for much longer. The relief was almost instant. Just one example of medically necessary plastic surgery, in case people arenât sure what that looks like.
Medically necessary plastic surgery also includes removing excess skin when someone loses a lot of weight: skin folds can become infected. Burn victimsâ skin grafts, those are plastic surgery too. The field covers a lot more than people think.
Harold Gillies, now considered to be the father of modern plastic surgery, developed most of his techniques (many of which are still in use today) specifically to reconstruct the faces of men who'd been injured in WW1.
Advances in weaponry meant that, for the first time, men were coming home from war with literally half their faces blown off, on a regular basis. This was not only traumaticâ there were cases of men cancelling engagements or being afraid to see their families, because of their disfigurementsâ but also caused problems with every day tasks like speaking and eating, in which your face plays a pretty key role.
Gillies arranged for a whole ward, and later a hospital, to be dedicated to the treatment of these men, and took steps to ensure that all soldiers who received these kinds of injuries on the battlefield would be sent to him directly. He developed methods for applying skin grafts so that larger portions of the face could be repaired.
He continued his work treating wounded soldiers throughout WW1 and WW2, and when both wars were endedâ just in case he hadn't done enough to establish himself as a full on heroâ he was then approached by a medical student named Michael Dillon, a trans man, and was able to use the same techniques he'd developed to reconstruct the penises of wounded soldiers to give him a phalloplasty. The first one ever performed on a trans man. He even diagnosed the guy with a condition to explain the frequent operations, so as to avoid outing him.
Dillon later wrote a book about trans-ness, which inspired Roberta Cowell, who became the first British transwoman to get a vaginoplasty, also performed by Gillies.
In both cases, the techniques he developed were still being used in similar operations decades later. Gillies himself stated that he wanted no publicity for performing these operations, saying that "If it gives real happiness, that is the most that any surgeon or medicine can give.â
