reading the actors' interviews is such an interesting experience because they have SO MUCH really poignant commentary on the characters and their dynamics to offer, and for a moment it makes you go "wait, am i media illiterate? how did i miss half of that while watching the show? am i really the problem?"
and then you remember assad and eric talking about the DM dynamic this season, all those conversations about beaten-up stuffed animals and the horror of realising that someone has been part of the fabric of your life for over 50 years, and re-uniting with a high school crush who has changed so much as a person but is still, somehow, someone you love, etc. etc. etc. and then you remember that literally None of that was in the show. it's all just actors doing their own character work to fill in the gaps in the scripts they had to work with.
i love your blog and i have respect for your judgement. i was wondering if you are willing to discuss armand's three apologies to lestat, louis, and daniel? what does each letter means for him and how come it was only louis that got so brutally tortured by him, while we dont even see lestat suffering from the beheading? and how come he felt like he wronged daniel the most? is it just because of the forced turning or else? finally, how do you see armand's relationship and dynamic with those three in season 4?

As for the three apologies, well ... Armand technically only apologised to Daniel and Lestat.
Louis didn't really get an apology. What Louis got was Armand basically confessing about the many ways Armand had deceived and fucked with Louis' head over the years, starting all the way back in Paris. And that the only reason he'd been with Louis was that it was a way for him to survive, which he realized he'd mistakenly thought was love.
Armand revealing all of that wasn't really an apology because Armand clearly didn't feel sorry about any of it.
What he was was cold with anger.
No, Armand really revealed all of that because he wanted Louis to apologize to him, because Louis wasn't in love with Armand and did all that he did with Armand only because of being in love with Lestat and, at heart, wanting to be with Lestat.
And that the relationship with Armand had been built on mutual deceptions from both of them.
Armand wanted Louis to openly confess to that and everything Louis did with/to Armand because of that.
Armand very much felt Louis owed him that.
And that is very much not how the 12-step program works.
When you do such apologies, you are supposed to do it without any expectation that the person will forgive you or apologize for any wrong you may still think they did to you.
When Armand went to apologize to Daniel and Lestat, notice he didn't say or expect anything in return from them, when they were cold and dismissive towards him.
Even though, from what it looks like in retrospect at the moment, he did begin fucking with Lestat's band even before that apology he gave to him, by getting into Alex's head and puppeting him, "just to cause chaos." Which is something that got buried in the plot clutter in the season finale and was easy to miss, and I realized he'd said that after it got mentioned in the tags in a reblog I had of this post (thank you @itwasanangryinch).
So, when you look at the overview of it all? The only person Armand gave any sort of apology to, without fucking with them beforehand (puppetering Alex) as well as after (with the murder of Larry wrt Lestat), or because he wanted some reciprocation in turn with an admission of what he saw as that person's own failing towards him about it all (Louis), was Daniel.
And yes, as I said in one of my most recent posts, I do think Armand has been lying by omission to Daniel since EP305. But that lie came about from him telling Daniel that he loved him in EP304, which I 100% think Armand never intended to do at the time.
But once he did, he just decided to go with it and get back together with Daniel via it. 🤷🏾♀️
Which, no, is not sustainable, but the apology that led to it happening, I do think, was the only one that had no underlying resentments tied to it (Lestat). Or actions that were really more about getting the other person to apologize to him (Louis).
So yeah, the "apology" each person received reveals Armand's mindset about them at the time, in my opinion. The content of Daniel's apology can only be speculated about. We didn't get to hear the full thing Armand wrote to Daniel, so IMO the reason he felt the way he did there is still up in the air. But yes, I do believe that Armand was sincere and does think that, out of everyone, Daniel is the one he wronged the most.
It is why Armand just quietly left after Daniel yelled at him and didn't try to interact with him again or anything until Daniel approached him on the street after Lestat's diss track. With Daniel, Armand actually, more or less, followed what you are supposed to do when it comes to that part of the 12 steps.
The apology he gave to Lestat is still very much from Armand's own POV about what went on between them, some of which Lestat contradicts (such as what happened in Paris not being a "play" but a real, actual trial). And Armand's actions with Alex and Larry show that Armand very much appears to still carry some hate and resentment toward Lestat, even before he gave that apology. As well as after he did.
And the letter Armand wrote to Louis was very real, direct, and raw. But at its heart, it wasn't about giving an apology at all, so much as it was about confessing to his side of the mutual deception of their relationship together, and then wanting Louis to do the same. That was the motivation behind all of that when it came to Louis, and nothing else.
As to their dynamics after all of this, going into Season 4. Well, I think Louis and Lestat are, rightly, not going to want to have shit to do with Armand for obvious reasons. It will only be the Akashalyps that will likely force them all to interact with each other again.
Though the rift between them won't be healed by that, if Louis' annoyed look at Armand during the opening auction scene from EP301 is any indication.

I don't see Season 4 going well for them -- individually or together -- given all the clues and foreshadowing we got all season, particually wrt Daniel.
Now, long-term, I think everything will work out fine for them both in the end, and they will be together. Endgame. But short-term, wrt Season 4? 😬 I think it will be and go quite badly.

i know the actors are basically forced to write their own fan fiction at this point since the writers paid them dust this season but let me tell you, eric's been absolutely killing it with his daniel/dm analyses.
according to eric, daniel is mesmerized by armand. he's getting all hot and bothered by the power he sees in armand. but it all also comes from a point of loneliness.
"the raw energy, raw desire" is an insane thing to say, truly.
and assad too. even though he keeps insisting that the armand and daniel romance is doomed. doomed or not, the potential in his words is so good.
if we strip it to the basics, they are both insanely fascinated with the other. where louis finds armand boring, daniel can't get enough of him, even though he's still really angry. which is still somewhat in line with book canon. i just hope the writers see it too.

I think I speak for everyone in this fandom when I say that we need Black writers back in the writer’s room.
The Black writers for seasons 1-2 of IWTV were Ben Philippe, David B Harris, and A. Zell Williams.
These are the men responsible for providing substance and depth to the Black characters in the first two seasons, mainly Louis and Claudia. They knew how to tackle struggle, injustices, history, rage, pain, and the ugly truth of American and European Black history. They didn’t pull punches with the hard stuff and they knew how to work with the soft stuff.
Season 3 tried to create edgy content and humor without these men and absolutely failed at it in every way possible. And they have failed both Louis and Claudia.
The Black jokes about Louis being “Louisiana Fried Chicken”, Louis continuing to be the pimp and needing his White savior that is Lestat, Claudia’s entire monologue about Louis being a literal slave to Lestat in that old Louisiana accent. And not to mention the complete erasure of Lemuel after only a couple episodes.
It’s not working.
If there’s gonna be Black actors on screen, there needs to be Black writers in the writer’s room.
with few exceptions we have only seen black characters graphically get brutalized. they had closeups of louis’s body and face after lestat tried to murder him showing the extent of what was done, we saw just how burned and disfigured he was after her suicide attempt, claudia’s death is one of the most graphic i’ve seen on any tv show, we got closeups of their ankles slashed and shots of louis being kicked in the head and claudia being shoved into a box of live rats by the coven members. the majority of louis’s scenes in episode 7 were of his decapitated head on a pike, forced to look at his body as it flailed, begging to die, forced to apologize in something so close to a saw trap that it was bordering on copyright infringement while being painted as cruel and deserving of the abuse and then branded by armand.
we didn’t see any shots of lestat’s head in the bowling bag. we saw him burn, but it was portrayed as comical. we did not see bruce as he died, we did not see lestat get torn up by the wolves, we did not watch nicki die. in the majority of the scenes where a white character is injured, the action is cut away, out of frame, out of focus, mostly implied.
the extent of what we saw of the brutality of black characters now feels almost fetishistic. at the end of episode 105, lestat is floating in the air looking dreamy and louis is beaten to a pulp on the ground; episode 207, lestat is put together in a suit with his hair done and louis and claudia have been severely beaten. like, after this season, the rest of the show just looks weird.
The showrunners chose to make Louis and Claudia black and experience life in the Jim crow era. They chose to do the full race swap in season 1, not just making the characters but also the story black. They chose to racialize the violence that both Louis and Claudia face throughout the first season. No one was forcing their hands and they got praised for the stuff they did in the first two seasons, for bringing in the added nuance of systemic racism. So why should I as an audience member of colour give them any grace when they choose to write dialogues containing numerous racialized and gendered micro aggressions not just towards Louis or Claudia but also towards minor characters like Dee or Lemuel who weren't supposed to exist as they are (black) in the show?? Why is Daniel (a white man) who is supposed to be a Pulitzer prize winning investigative journalist who was lecturing Louis on his own story about the racism he faced referring to him as a "bucket of Louisiana fried chicken"?? Why is Armand textually belittled for being a CSA victim while Lestat is endlessly provided with grace and understanding in the text of the show for his victimhood?? Who thought it was alright to adapt a scene from the books involving white characters talking about parental betrayal and insert racially charged dialogues (that too old school racist shit not even the n word) when it was unnecessary to preserve the nuance of the scene?? Why is this show denying the racialized nature of domestic violence that they chose to portray in S1 ??? (Lestat getting mildly annoyed that Louis didn't enjoy going to the operas in nola when he had to act as Lestat's servant to be allowed in tf??) Why is Gabriella like that??
I cannot help but look at this season of the show as a sign of the times tbh. IWTV aired during a very liberal era of entertainment and now that fascism and white supremacy are on the rise everywhere white entertainers have become comfortable enough to fall back into old habits. Never thought this show in particular would have this problem when I watched the first season but it is what it is I guess
one of many things i really loved was how anticlimactic rhaenyra taking kings landing is. there is barely any action, barely any spectacle, barely any dragons. they just walk through the halls functionally unimpeded and all we see is their silver targaryen hair as they walk through halls that are familiar to us by now but where they feel out of place. there is tension in the fact that there is no tension at all. we know daemon is a better fighter than any hightower guard. we know they have more dragons. even the goldcloaks rushing in lasts barely more than a second. otto's death is imperfect and unsatisfying. there is no revenge or catharsis behind her swing. all of this build up her entire life the moment she has been waiting for through all of the death and grief and she hobbles up to the throne in tears because there is absolutely no glory in taking the iron throne, none of it matters, but its too late to do anything else but sit.

I've been really confused on the fan response to Louis's arc this season because, at least in my eyes, it made perfect sense and is actually one of the best parts of the show.
SPOILERS FOR THE VAMPIRE LESTAT AND EP 7

I'll analyze Louis's arc below but the TLDR is:
Most of Louis's worst traits exhibited in this season have been highlighted in the last two seasons.
Claudia's racial comments during the seance make more sense when you realize that Louis considers himself a temporarily embarrassed white man and not a black man, a mindset that got her killed.
Louis's apology to Armand was not him groveling to his abuser, it was him taking accountability for his long history of exploiting people for his own lack of self worth, which includes Armand.
It is valid that black fans feel uncomfortable by how graphic ep 7 is.
The scene with Paul and Lestat hit so hard because it was the narrative acknowledging that despite all of the horrible things Louis has done, he still deserves unconditional love, which he receives from Lestat.
Jacob has said that he loved how he got to play a complex black character this season, they were joking around while filming ep 7, and the actors consult on the scripts while they're being written. So the narrative that the black cast is being held hostage by the writers this season is not true and should not be used to harass the writers of the show or be weird on the actors' social media pages. (Also this level of gore has been seen in the show since S1.)
At the beginning of the season, Louis, post-Dubai, has regained his agency and is now acting on his own terms. However, he still lacks full closure over Claudia's death, so he hunts down Bruce, the vampire who raped Claudia. Louis brutally kills Bruce while reading Claudia's diary pages to him as a form of justice for Claudia. But the act is ultimately purposeless because 1. Claudia is dead, 2. Bruce does not care about Claudia's suffering/mentions that Louis also exploited her through the IWTV book being published, and 3. Louis isn't doing this for her he's doing this for himself.
Then Regina, a woman who looks exactly like Claudia, "appears" in Louis's life and he stalks her. Louis learns about her money troubles/her only fans (yes this is a necessary detail), and uses that information to convince her to pretend to be Claudia for money. This ties directly back to Louis being a pimp and exploiting women for the sake of his self worth. He even goes as far as paying another woman to pretend to be Madeline, Claudia's companion. When Regina and fake Madeline kiss in front of him for his "pleasure," Louis is disgusted with himself but does not end the arrangement. Louis then sinks into a codependent relationship with Regina (she mentions he texts her hundreds of times a day). He later has Lestat confirm that she does look like Claudia and he's not hallucinating.
All of this is the foundation to the seance in ep 6, where Claudia tears into Louis. I was shocked and unnerved by some of what Claudia said but, when considering the first season again, it clicked for me. Claudia's racial comments during the seance make more sense when you realize that Louis considers himself a temporarily embarrassed white man and not a black man. (Merrick mentions earlier her great grandmother said how Louis's family made their money from selling flesh (slavery)...Louis exploiting sex workers is a continuation of that.)
Because of his desire to sit alongside the white men who were oppressing him and his anger at being continuously undercut by those same men due to his race, he lashes out (putting the no whites sign on the Azeala and killing Fenwick.) He doesn't consider how his actions would reflect on the black populace and causes a race riot that led to Claudia's near death. A near death that Louis took advantage of and made Lestat turn her just to affirm his self worth.
Claudia's forcing Louis to contend with his continued refusal to reconcile with his race in any meaningful way. It's brutal and uncomfortable and so mean spirited because his inability to do so ruined her life and got her killed in the most horrifying way possible. It's supposed to make the audience flinch not because the writers are racist or hate Louis but for the sake of having the only character who can realistically hold a mirror up to Louis and try to make him see himself fully for the first time.
And what does Louis do instead? He not only returns to being Claudia's father but returns to who he was in season one. He attempts to put Claudia in her place, force her to be grateful for what he did for her, inadvertently reiterating the point that Louis has not and will not fully contend with anyone who makes him question his place or his ego. He elevates himself above her not just as a father but racially as well.
In the aftermath of the seance, Louis and Lestat share a tender moment, ignoring the horror they've witnessed. A lot of fans view this as a retcon of Louis being so distraught at Claudia's death being mentioned that he was willing to kill himself in season two, but it actually tracks. Louis could only rationalize Claudia as a perfect victim. He stepped out into the sun because he heard her calling him. The moment Claudia shows him her complexity and reveals how much she hates him, Louis immediately falls back into old patterns as in season two when confronted with her anger over Armand threatening her. He views her outburst as a burden on him. Louis only wants Claudia when she demands nothing of him and the moment she does is content to let her go.
This ties into the events of the finale quite seamlessly. Armand has Louis's head on a table so he can 1. apologize to Louis and 2. torture him till he apologizes back but Armand doesn't know what exactly Louis should be apologizing for. (He says it's for wasting a century being together but he could have left at any time.) Armand used Louis like Louis used Claudia as a way to reaffirm his sense of self worth. Louis mentions that he used Armand to hurt Lestat but Armand views this apology as surface level, artifice. Louis then goes on to refuse to apologize for Lestat being the love of his life defying Armand, who makes Regina (Armand's captive) cut her wrist. But as his health declines, Louis does give a genuine apology (Jacob confirmed it was genuine) for exploiting Armand's past as a sex slave for his own purposes.
This scene is Louis finally taking the cotton (another reference to his connection to pimping with slavery from his confession monologue in ep 1) out of his ears to hear the cries of the people he's been exploiting. He even says it himself. Louis saw a lot of what happened to Armand happening in New Orleans and refused to acknowledge Armand's past trauma while they were together. I would even argue he weaponized Armand's trauma in Paris and then threw it back in his face in San Francisco.
Louis mentions that none of what happened in this episode would have happened if Louis had shown empathy to Armand and his history, which is exactly what he should be apologizing for. Louis isn't groveling to Armand by apologizing, he's acknowledging Armand as an equal for the first time which he should have done when they got together romantically in Paris. This isn't a realization Louis would have come to had he not been physically forced to (physical death = ego death in this case) as he ignored Claudia entirely.
The finale is such a good reckoning for all of Louis's worst traits, traits that were set up from the first episode onward. So I'm confused where all the vitriol has been coming from? I can understand that the gore in ep 7 and Claudia's fate is horrific (which hasn't been concluded if I remember correctly), but this is a gothic horror show and they've used this level of gore as early as S1. Jacob has mentioned how he enjoyed playing a complex black character, said that the actors consult on the scripts, and that they were joking around while filming ep 7 so there's no harm being done to the actors themselves. I don't see a reason to hate the writers because their choices make sense.

So it's not that the show posits that Louis is 100% a horrible person that the audience shouldn't empathize with, but that he's a flawed person and now that he's begun to reckon with those flaws he can finally move forward with someone who loves him.
Now I do understand not wanting to see harm being done to black characters and avoiding the show for that. That is 100% your prerogative. But projecting a false narrative that the actors are being tortured and forced to participate in the show and hate the writing is just not true at all.
(Moreover there are a lot of narrative/character choices being made in the context of the show that 1. will likely be expanded upon just like the witches being burned scene was expanded upon and 2. make sense when you realize that this is the Bad People show where Bad People do bad things and that there's a lot that's intentional and not bad writing. Now are the writers perfect angels who never do anything wrong? No of course not! There's a lot to critique the show over. Go ham! Just don't harass people!)
