If Chiyoh separated Hannibal and Will post fall, I feel like the catalyst to her going back into Willâs orbit is part curiosity and part confirming that she didnât make the wrong decision.
If she was observing Will for all of the Red Dragon arc and even Hannibalâs trial, the conclusion she probably came to is heâs someone who canât be trusted because heâs so unpredictable and indecisive. Plus itâs not like these two have a very good track record with each other. That being said, itâs not like she actually wants him dead even if thatâs the most convenient thing to do. She just assumed that his âfriendsâ wouldnât actually try to kill him like they would Hannibal.
Thatâs where Chiyohâs insight and knowledge has a gap from Hannibal or Will. Even if sheâs observed the others from afar and from reading up on Tattlecrime, she doesnât know them. She doesnât see that people like Jack and Alana are capable of great acts of depravity to justify their own self righteousness because they are their own monsters walking amongst society. Or that they donât actually believe Will is on their side. Hannibal knows otherwise by a long shot.
Given this to be true and Chiyoh being who she is, of course sheâs going to have to confirm that with her own eyes. Sheâs not exactly going to Will to save his skin because she cares, but because she needs to see if these people are exactly as Hannibal says they are. If she was wrong, then Willâs blood is indirectly on her hands. That would leave a rather bad taste in her mouth thatâs hard to wash out.
Unfortunately this means that sheâs forced to interact with Will and that would also mean that she may unwillingly give him a lead as to where Hannibal may possibly be. Between letting Will die and having him find Hannibal, itâs a difficult decision thatâs ultimately going to be decided on her own compassion and curiosity. While she rather not have Will find Hannibal, she also rather not have a guilty conscience about his death and how that could impact Hannibal down the line. Either way, she loses. She just has to eat the bullet on whatâs the better choice.
