funniest thing to ever happen was when my boyfriend put on the first episode of columbo (which i'd never seen) but he wouldn't tell me what show it was he would only say "you'll get it when he shows up." but a fun fact about the first episode of columbo is that he doesn't show up for 32 minutes and when he does, he silently walks into the room with a cigar and does a little pose and goes "hi i'm columbo."
I have seen a young lady with her table loaded with volumes loaded of fictitious trash, poring day after day and night after night over highly wrought scenes and skillfully portrayed pictures of romance, until her cheeks grew pale, her eyes became wild and reckless, and her mind wandered and was lost — the light of intelligence passed behind a cloud, and her soul was forever benighted. She was insane, incurably insane from reading novels.

I obviously don’t know anything about Lark Birchby but good mothers that are too vocal about being good mothers and that constantly tell their child that they are good mothers are bad mothers. This is my #truth
Oh absolutely!!! Easy call. (Not putting you down, anon, by calling your call easy, just agreeing with you.) Lark's situation is a liiiiiittle more complicated than that – my joking little depiction of her deal communicated her inner monologue more than her external actions. In truth she is sort of in a perpetual conflict between the drive to constantly self-define as a good mother* and good wife and the distant pressing knowledge that this is not perfectly true. Soooooo a lot of ways she self defines is by trying to outwardly projecting that perfect ultimate mother image all while not fully believing in it or liking it, so the cracks begin to show, and the older her child gets the more they start wishing she would just admit that she is bisexual and mired in perpetual grief and a little polyamorous** rather than continuing to put up the façade.
so in short i agree with you anon. i'm just mesmerized by the beauty of the world and perpetually invested in #thinking about #lark. The process of ideating ways in which lark could be a bad friend/bad partner/bad mother all while being in many ways a person who is obsessed with her own impact on the world and with her own drive to not hurt other people has been a really productive part of character building for me! Because, once more: once upon a time, in a much earlier version of this novel, she was dull as rocks.
*in many ways in opposition to mina, the ultimate bad mother of her peer group
** her son doesn't know all those words but he has picked up on all of those vibes because he isn't stupid.
getting pretty goofy with the number of trends, behaviours, tendencies and facts of life I see attributed to "the pandemic" that I am old enough to be certain predate the year of our lord twenty nine-teen.

One of my favorite ever pieces of lore about myself is that I learned what sex was at age 4 but did not know you could do it for fun until I was 12
zimone and dina have been treating her well
So obviously there's turkey/greece(/syria/lebanon/etc) and I have never encountered it directly but I'm fairly sure it's similar for russia/ukraine/poland - are there any other culinary cultural continuums where a certain sort of nationalist will get incredibly prickly about defending the honor and distinct virtues of a dish that is basically indistinguishable from what they make 100 feet over the border but use a different word for? I find them kind of charming.

Hang on I wanna know if other people have the same hangups I do
If your favorite book/series gets a spinoff (a sequel/prequel, a continuation with different POV characters, etc), how do you feel about that?
Usually pretty excited to see more from the same universe/characters!
Neutral. I might enjoy the spinoff or not, but I'll probably read it just to see
I've been burned by bad quality spinoffs too many times. I'll probably avoid
the very mention of a spinoff makes me wish i was illiterate
