Once when my bus was running late, the driver just went into a bookies & was in there for so long that the next bus (15 minutes later) overtook us. Like they had all the time in the world.

There’s a quality that certain books/movies/TV shows have that leads me to say, “Yeah, I can see people making fanfiction of that.” It’s something to do, I think, with how tight the story is, how much feels open-ended or like it could be elaborated on.

Something like Breaking Bad, for example, has low squiggability (that’s what I’m calling this quality). It’s tightly written, the characters are consistent, there’s little left to interpolate or extrapolate. Obviously, people DO write fanfic of Breaking Bad, but it still has a low squiggability score. Whereas something like Supernatural has a high squiggability score. Fantasy and science fiction often have high squiggability scores. This suggests squiggability could also be related to worldbuilding and potential for people to borrow a premise or setting.

And sometimes you’ll read or watch something and you’ll say, “Ah, low squiggability,” and then you’ll open tumblr and find out that everyone else seem to think its squiggability was very high indeed.

#it’s crazy to me how much squiggability people see in the terror tbh.#<- prev i think it’s bc it has other squiggable qualities not elaborated on in this post #namely 1) big ensemble cast with limitless potential for different combos of character interactions #2) character dynamics - even the canonical romantic relationships - are steeped in ambiguity and subtext that fanfiction can try to decode #and 3) even though the narrative is tightly contained i THINK that #because it has SO many points where Things Go Wrong. the potential for canon divergences & fix its is RIPE #oh also 4) even though the narrative is self contained & tight it contains plentiful time skips #which is perfect for gap filling

the pitt is hilarious for cast of suicidal characters because you see a guy literally get talked off the ledge five minutes into the pilot episode and think damn okay he’s really going through it and then thirty episodes later you catch yourself thinking god i wish everyone else here was as well adjusted as the guy who nearly threw himself off the hospital roof in episode 1 and gets shot at recreationally to abate his suicidal thoughts
