โ you canโt save everyone. โ ( for Oberyn )
ฦธฬตฬกำฬตฬจฬฦท โย OBERYN IS NOT A MAN WHO ISย told what he can or cannot doย . . .ย the red viper is fierce and his venom is proud, and he is the master to his own actionย . . .ย hence, when balonโs son and heir, maron greyjoy, manifests seemingly from the shadows of the night, as the sea sings below his kingfisher, only to say he canโt save everyone, the red viper cannot help but to scoff.ย logicallyย oberyn understands these words to be trueย . . .ย he understands them all too well.ย in spite of his efforts to keep his family and those he loves safe, his failures have been monumentalย -ย he had failed to keep elia safe from the dragons.ย he had failed protecting her son from the mountainโs grasp.ย he had even failed in saving rhaenys from the bladesย . . .ย until the letter from starfall came.ย his redemption, his chance to avenge elia, to undo those wrongs, and give her rest.ย from the beginning, doranโs plans had matched his brotherโs.ย avenge their sister.ย bring down the lannisters.ย place the rightful queen on the throne.ย oberyn had not always agreed with his brotherโs motives, but the endgame was much the same.ย certainly, oberyn has taken liberties in how he has raised herย -ย adara sand, his bastard daughter, a sand snake, until the truth could be unveiledย . . .ย he brought her up no differently.ย hers is venom, much like his.ย
ย ย ย ย it was a venom he took pride in, when rhaenys went against doranโs wishes to first go to the iron islands, to secure the greyjoy fleet for her causeย . . .ย a wise decision, from oberynโs point of view.ย the ironborn were just as hungry for revenge, so why not spurย it into action ? ? ?ย and, admittedly, he had been apprehensiveย when news of the proposal cameย . . .ย but unlike doran, oberyn is pleasedย -ย a lord like willas tyrell or robb stark or edmure tully would have been wroughtย with boredom, lacking the force necessary to tear down a whole dynasty like the lannistersย . . .
ย ย ย ย it certainly shows in maronโs character, as he approaches the red viper and speaksย to him in such a mannerย -ย cannot save everyone.ย the thought is both vexing and amusing and the emotions play obviously over oberynโs face.ย stillย . . .ย he understandsย part of the intentionย . . .ย after all, he has made it clear his intentionsย -ย avenge his sister and her son, place his niece on the throne, and protectย his family by any means necessaryย . . .ย to save them from the absolute carnage and bloodshed the lannisters would see them through, again.
ย ย ย ย โ you have a uniqueย set of losses which mirror house martellโs, lord of the axe.ย i know better than most what it means to avenge someone you failed to protect, as i am sure you do, โย oberyn says, his dark, near obsidian, eyes flashing amidst the darkness.ย ย โ there will be no rest until blood pays for blood. โย avenge them they shall.ย a cold smile adorns oberynโs lips, reaping pleasure from the thought of slaying the mountain, taking his skull, and presenting it to tywin before he, too, is speared.
ย ย ย ย but revenge is not only for house martellย . . .ย house greyjoy shall also have its pound of flesh.ย the boltons.ย yes, the bloody and loathsome house of immorality and violence, placed precisely where they ought to beย -ย in the unforgiving cold of the winter, a damned place oberyn takes no pleasure in eventually returning toย . . .ย but the north is yet another necessity in the grand scheme of things.ย and, alas, with the starks dead and the boltons in power, it shall not be easy to procure.ย once, doran had thought robb stark a possible matchย -ย secure the north, corner the lannisters from both sidesย -ย but the boy was a fool.ย he thrust aside his crown for honor.ย he and his people paid the price for his faults, just as ned stark did.ย oberyn never liked the idea of ice and fire.ย too catastrophic.ย arguably the same could be said for the sea and fire, but a kraken and a dragon are rulers of the sky and sea, apex predatorsย -ย far likelier to endure.
ย ย ย ย it is this fierce and dangerous matchย -ย of which doran has been opposed to from the beginningย -ย that shall bring the boltons to their knees.ย oberyn can only imagine the absolute havoc the ironborn shall wreak onto them, particularly what maron greyjoy shall do to the bastard of bolton himself.ย ramsay snow.
ย ย ย ย oberyn hopes he has a chance to see it.
ย ย ย ย โ once the south has been taken, might we dare to make a tread into the northern territories.ย our allies shall be greater, then, and our resources more plentiful. โย oberyn looks up at the moon.ย arianne is to wed willas tyrellย . . .ย arrangements, discreetly, are being made within this very moment.ย with house tyrell secretly within their grasp, right under the noses of the lannisters, the fight should be easy.ย more so, the mutual hatred against the lannisters shall be a great driving forceย . . .ย and with margaery tyrell to wed a princeย . . .ย ย โ and when the full force of such an army travels north, the houses shall kneel.ย the boltons wonโt, not willingly, but theyโll have no trouble when your axe is lodged into their heels. โ
ย ย ย ย the red viper steps away from the rails of the ship, turning to face maron greyjoy properly.ย a tall and broad boy, fierce and jaded and hungry for justiceย . . .ย as they all are.ย oberyn finds that he sees much of himself in the boy, the same angerย . . .ย the same losses.ย what a relief it is that balon greyjoyโs son shall not repeat the sins and follies of his father.
ย ย ย ย and the realm shall know fear for it.
ย ย ย ย โ if the rumors are true, your brother is alive.ย i doubt youโll find him as you remember him when you and my niece doย secure the north, but at the very least youโll have him. โย oberyn exhales then, hooking his thumb through his leather belt, adorned with patterns of twisted snakes, and tilts his head to the sky.ย he longs for the shoreย . . .ย for a horse and his spear, to fight, not to sit and wait with utter impatience here.ย praise the gods, his moment is afoot.ย ย โ i shall go into the stormlands when we port.ย they say the mountain is thereย . . .ย my men and i shall corner them.ย bring him down.ย and when i return, i shall present the mountainโs headย -ย consider it an early wedding present. โ
ย ย ย ย rhaenys is unhappy with such a plan, though she recognizes the importanceย . . .ย oberyn must fight, lest he wither and perish on this ship.ย he must spill lannister blood beside his men.ย and with the mountain so closeย . . .
ย ย ย ย โ and, with any luck, we shall have stormโs end and dragonstone not long after, โย oberyn says, smiling wickedly.ย ย โ and i shall reap great pleasure in watching the lannister corpses rise before the iron throneย . . . โ
