Forest cover fell from ~75% in the 1940s to ~21–40% by the 1980s, then rebounded to ~52–60% by the 2010s–2020s. Costa Rica banned deforestation subsidies, expanded protected areas, and launched a national payments‑for‑ecosystem‑services program, making it the first tropical country to reverse deforestation.
I need more people to play and love Cassette Beasts, it deserves so much more.
Play it, I'd like to say "it's like Pokemon" but this statement doesn't capture how uniquely deranged of a game it actually is just go.
BRINGING THIS BACK CUZ GUESS WHAT'S GETTING A FUCKING SEQUEL
How dare you to hide this in the tags.
Remember "don't let your kids eat any junk food, EVER" in the '90s?
My mother was one of the no-junk-food moms. But parenting has an expiry date, and do you know what I did as soon as I was no longer supervised?
I ate potato chips for lunch at work every day for all of my first job. And all of my first year of trade school. Not potato chips with lunch; potato chips and nothing else for lunch.
Banning kids from something that's not always good for them:
Has a time limit. Your kid will grow up. You won't be able to enforce the ban on an adult.
Gives them no practical experience on how to manage their relationship with that thing when they get unrestricted access to it.
Makes that thing incredibly attractive to them. Even if it kinda sucks.
Makes them sneaky about it, meaning they won't come to you for help if it becomes a problem for them.
My mother wanted healthy kids who didn't eat junk food. What she ended up with in the short term was little goblins who stole baking chocolate from the top cupboard and kept bags of chips they bought off friends hidden under their beds. What she got in the long term was adults with no idea how to regulate their own diets and a mountain of shame about eating anything that tastes good.
Is that the relationship you want your kids to have with the greatest source of information and connection our species has ever seen?

It's like we're always saying...
Social Media, Plagiarism, and AI in an Age of Exploitation
I'm sorry WHAT
'lazy people don't feel guilty about not doing anything' is insane to me and I have been trying to make my brain believe it for a long time, it shocked me to my core when I first heard it
An important corollary to "if you were faking your mental illness, you could stop whenever you wanted."
Let’s say you wanted to glue fabric to wood, but what do you use? What about glass to paper? This to That lets you choose two things you want to glue and lists what types of glue is best. (Because people have a need to glue things to other things!)
This is an incredibly awesome site. Go check it out!
Whhhhaaaaaattt!???
EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS
This is one of the first websites I was told about in props. It also has information about the toxicity, adhere time, price, and other stuff about the glues.
Useful for cosplayers and DIY!
THIS IS MY FAVORITE WEBSITE
I consider it my duty as a librarian to make sure everyone knows about it.
Any time you get scolded for biting the hand that feeds you, a good chunk of the time they're not even fucking feeding you in the first place. They just think that you should feel like they are.
lovely story from a friend today.
Look, this post has been wildly more popular than I thought it deserved, apparently at least in part because "don't burden others; be independent" is far more ingrained in people than I realized. So here's the thing: society works when people help each other. Helping others gives people a chance to know each other, and gives them an investment in the people they help. Helping creates bonds. People enjoy helping, and you are doing a good by letting them help you if they so wish.
Offer help; accept help. You will be a part of creating a helping culture. Which, incidentally, weakens capitalism and the fractionation between people that benefits those who would use us.
A horrifyingly few years ago I realized asking for help builds trust, too.
If I ask you for help then I demonstrate you can ask me for help.
That.
Was a difficult lesson.
If I ask you for
help then I demonstrate you
can ask me for help.
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

Video id: A cropped instagram video of two bobcats being introduced to one another. Clips show them cuddling, pouncing on each other, and rubbing against each other. End video id. (src)
two bobcats (Lynx rufus), Jasper & Sur, being introduced to one another at the Wildlife Learning Center in Sylmar, CA! Jasper is the skinnier, browner one who comes through the gate at the beginning with the very dark striping, and Sur is the wider, greyer one with the facial scarring.
Jasper is a non-releasable habituated bobcat who was likely kept as an illegal pet before being released into the wild and found rubbing up against people's legs. Sur was hit by a car and has permanent facial injuries that require him to have lifetime care.
Donate to WLC and the bobcat's care here!
typically, bobcats are quite solitary and only spend time together when mating or mothers raising young; however in some captive situations males can cohabitate! this center also actually cohabs a habituated canada lynx with a habituated bobcat.

reminder that you cannot call people or things "retarded" around me. we will have a conversation where I explain that I can still tell you the names of 62 people for which I was legally responsible. I will tell you that I loved them
and you will feel like you were being an asshole and wonder why you don't just stop saying it altogether. me too.
if we're friends, you can call me a faggot. there can be a lot of tenderness in that. I got beat up and bullied and just generally treated like a detestable freak by people who called me that word while they did it. hearing it spoken by a loved voice, with clear affection, can be beautiful. it can feel like understanding, forgiveness, absolution, permission, and a thousand other wonderful things. it can be beautiful.
I got called retarded too, but we don't share any special insight into that. it's just a word to us. pick a different one.
a lady with a developmental disability once explained to me that she'd overheard some kids calling each other retarded in the mall we'd visited earlier that day. searching for something to say that might comfort her, I explained that they don't know anything about people like her and so they weren't really talking about her, just being ignorant.
she got angry and said "then they need to pick a different word". and so you need to pick a different word.
don't think this is exclusive to public spaces like the mall or the park or whatever either. she has a tablet and access to the internet, just the same as you do. she can read, write, and make her own decisions. she has a husband.
you don't know anything about her, you need to stop talking about her. pick a different word.
I'm glad this one is still going around.
I actually do think it’s better for abusers and abusive characters to realize the harm their past actions caused and seek to do better than be literally or metaphorically executed for their crimes

Reading comprehension test:
1. Does OP mention an obligation on victims to forgive abusers who have learned from their past actions?
2. Does OP mention any work on the part of victims to educate their abusers?
3. Is there any mention of “redemption” or “forgiveness” at all in this post?
Something about how society cares more about punishing the wicked than about making the world a better place, and how many people really struggle to shake that.
probably the worst attitude tumblr unintentionally cultivates is "the world out there is completely dangerous for you and no one can possibly understand you, so you should isolate yourself from it and avoid interacting with it as much as possible"
Time to roll out the Andrew Marr quote again...
"If you put away social media and you walk out into the streets and you look at real people, three-dimensional people, they mostly smile back at you. If you look around you- you see perfectly decent, ordinary people getting on with their lives and inclined, by and large, to rather like each other, that is the real us. Let us not be fooled."
