These are things I literally never would have known about. I’m tired of women being painted as just being pretty.

My mother spent her entire school career up until high school having to wear skirts, no matter how horrible the New England winters got, because she was forbidden to do otherwise. There were times when the weather was bad where my grandmother kept her home rather than make her walk to and from the bus in a skirt. 

They rebroadcast a few old interviews with Mary Tyler Moore, and in them she addressed the pants issue. There was a strict limit on what kind of pants she could wear (hence, always Capri pants, nothing masculine), and to use her words, how much cupping the pants could show. A censor would look at every outfit when she came out on stage, and if the pants cupped her buttocks too much, defining them rather than hiding them, then she had to get another pair.

My mum both fought to wear trousers and to wear the miniskirt. Ironically, of the two, trousers were the bigger fight.

And women actively fought for it. It took them years, it got them in trouble. But they persisted until they had pushed society far enough to accept women in trousers. Nothing says men can’t do the same.

I’m here for your fight to wear skirts, men. Just say the word.

re the skirts to school thing - it’s only in the past couple of decades that girls have been allowed to wear trousers to school in the UK.  And then only *some* schools.  They’re currently fighting to let boys wear skirts to school.

We were not allowed to wear trousers at my first secondary school in the late 80s. There was always a petition going round. It always got dismissed as a joke.

For those who don’t know what’s happening in the video, she untied her shoelaces, pulled one through the inside of the zip tie binding her hands, then tied the shoelaces together. Then, by pulling downward and back and forth on the shoelaces with her feet, she created enough friction to wear away part of the ziptie, making it weak enough to snap right off her hands.

Fun fact: Though being gay in the 40s sucked, being gay in the military was easier, and pretty common. There were apparently, at one point in time time so many lesbians in the military that when they tried to crack down on it, the girls wrote back and said “Look I can give you the names, but you’ll lose some of your best officers, and half your nurses and secretaries.” And they pretty much shut up about it unless you were especially bad at subtlety. Man I just hope Mei-Lin grew up and started using her martial arts to fight crime and foil bank robberies and stuff. With all the focus on magic, you forget how capable she actually is.
