hey can you reblog and tell me what’s the happiest you’ve ever felt while watching a sporting event?
bouncing off of @an-ruraiocht’s Iliad/Odyssey/Aeneid poll I’m curious about some other ancient Greek and Roman texts
Which of the following Greek or Roman texts would you say you are most familiar with?
The Iliad (Homer)
The Odyssey (Homer)
The Aeneid (Vergil)
Antigone (Sophocles)
Oedipus Rex (Sophocles)
Medea (Euripides)
The Bacchae (Euripides)
Another Greek tragedy (tell me in the tags!)
Metamorphoses (Ovid)
Pharsalia/Bellum Civile (Lucan)
Thebaid (Statius)
Another Greek or Roman epic poem (tell me in the tags!)
before you tell me in the tags/comments that I've clearly forgotten your favorite text or that I made a huge oversight and have egregiously ignored comedy/philosophy/historiography/etc, please consider (a) whether the Tumblr poll feature has an upper limit on the number of responses you can add to a poll and (b) whether I might have only listed specific, well-known texts in the genres of epic and tragedy for a reason

Hello 25th Century Tendi how are you doing today.
Do people know this is the husband of the prime minister of New Zealand
And who is the guy burying him in the sand
I love love love the Culture but i cannot stand the books personally because of how many detailed characters die right as you get used to them and how little the book spends actually *inside* the Culture. They come across to me as being less About The Culture and more like Takes Place Near The Culture.
Funny. I like it exactly because of that. I like how gauzy our view is of the Culture itself. It makes it feel vast and mysterious and unknowable in a way that's like looking back through history at something you can never truly interact with, only every experiencing it in fragments.
space ships in The Culture are run by fully sentient and autonomous machine intelligences called Minds, which pick their own names, and are (let's be honest) some of the best characters in the whole series. These names are supposed to represent the personality of the Mind(s) themselves and can be completely ludicrous. some of my favourite ship names are (in no particular order):
No More Mr. Nice Guy
So Much For Subtlety
Kiss My Ass
Screw Loose
I Thought He Was With You
Ultimate Ship (the Second)
Size Isn't Everything
I Blame My Mother
I Blame Your Mother
Me, I'm Counting
You Call This Clean?
Passing By And Thought I'd Drop In
Nervous Energy
Big Sexy Beast

A Captain Janeway episode
Aegon, Aemond and Criston all obsessed with Alicent this episode and she don’t give a fuck all she wants is her daughter’s baby aborted and something about the warm light of rhaenyra’s gaze.
in 2026, remember how GOOD writing feels. remember how satsfying it is to get your characters to the point you have been dying to get to, where they will experience the love, fear, relief or whatever the feeling you want to bring to life may be. let this year be the year of writing, prgress and of satisfactory endings.
i like whenever sisko and/or anyone else is like “respectfully kai winn i disagree with your actions and i will not assist in your nefarious schemes at this time” and then winn makes a perfect louise fletcher face of percolating rage and says like, with a manicured sincerity, “my child, it pains me to hear that you want to kill yourself right now”
