Oh man, on the weeks where I have the time, energy and mental capacity, I can literally halve our grocery costs. But it takes genuinely hours to achieve - meal plans with overlapping ingredients, working out how use-by-dates intersect, and thats before I even get on to comparing vouchers and price-per-weight and deals -

Catherine or Svetlana, and honestly I would’ve preferred Catherine. “Elizabeth Alexandra” sounds like my parents saw Hamilton right before I was born and just got real excited about it.

Tiffany. Wouldn’t that have been awful? it’s such a mean-girl name and I already seem unfriendly and mean apparently

Erica. But my dad was working evenings and watching soaps during the day, and he was addicted to All My Children; the name of the chief villain was Erica, so he nixed that one.

Rose. I could’ve had a nice normal easy to spell name if my father hadn’t been so #extra.

My dad reALly wanted to name me Lauren.  It ended up being my middle name. ^^

Julianna Rose. My mom decided it was too flowery when next to my sister’s name, so she shortened it.

My parents were convinced until I was born that I was going to be a boy so they were gonna name me Samuel Andrew. Instead I am named after two movies my mom liked.

Antoinette or Antonia (had I been a boy, I’d have been Anthony) but in the end my mother changed her mind.

Grace, which would have been a great irony.

chinese recipes, as handed down from mother to child: season it with a pinch of this and some of that. you want to know the exact amount? feel it in your heart. ask the stars. yell into the void. 

English recipes: boil and salt it. Okay that’s it enjoy

Greek recipes: You followed all the right steps but this isn’t quite right. I don’t know what to tell you.

Australia recipes: chuck it on the barbie

Latinx recipes: you will never make it better than your abuela, face the facts

Armenian recipes: spend eight days laboring over the stove. the food will be flavorful with the sacrifice of your sanity. no one will appreciate it.

Canadian recipes: It either needs more bacon, more maple syrup, more gravy, or an unholy combination of the three

Filipino recipes: SOY SAUCE AND VINEGAR EVERYWHERE

Welsh recipes: you ought to make it with this obscure type of cheese which doesn’t exist any more but you can replace it with this other obscure type of cheese from the other side of the country

Irish recipes: just dump a bunch of potatoes and meat in it, then cook at 350° for 20 minutes

Slovenian recipes: go to the garden, get some weeds, then make a soup out of it.

Ukrainian recipes: It needs more garlic. No, more than that. More. More.

Indian recipes: Is your curry burning a hole through the floor? Then it’s ready.

Jewish recipes: this reminds me of the time when all our people were slaughtered and/or when we slaughtered everyone else.

Literally nothing has helped my depression/anxiety as being outside in the garden. The bulbs I planted in the autumn are just beginning to peek through and it makes me so happy.
