Gardening and Epilepsy
Some of you have seen my solar punk and disabled post, so I’m going to elaborate in the only way I can. I am not obviously physically disabled. Most people see me as Able bodied, and usually this is true. My disability is Epilepsy.
Some people with Epilepsy can goes years between seizures, and some people have them daily. I’m somewhere in between. I can have up to four a week, but average more like 5 a month. The seizures themselves last a minute or less. The after affects of a seizure can lay me up for days.
So when considering gardening, I have to take these unpredictable episodes into account. One way I do that in the gardens I’ve had in the past is by planting hardy plants, that if I’m unable to get out every other day they will survive. I also plant in shady area’s, so if the only after affect I have in a migraine, I can go to a cool, shady area and either relax in the shade or weed/plant/ect.
When I get a house in the next year, I am planning on recreating a Japanese tea garden. After a seizure my sense of smell is insane, and flowers can make me sick to my stomach just by being there smelling good. So a Tea garden is a good option, as they are hardy greens rather than manicured flowers. (another reason, I was taught how to perform a tea ceremony in University by a woman who trained in Japan for years. so yay, I can perform one)
I will also include mint and other soft smelling greens. As the smell tends to help my headaches, unlike floral smells.
