The Little Art Connoisseur (1863) August Friedrich Siegert
Last time this came around I showed my three year old and he said "He's little like me!" and stared for a whole minute (v. Long in toddler time).
Howard V. Brown (1878-1945), "The Model Workers"
Brown was a really cool 1930s pulp sci-fi magazine artist. This one isn’t sci-fi, but it still might be my favorite work of his! Which is an odd thing to find myself saying, given that — as longtime readers may have noticed over the 13 years I’ve run this blog — I really like sci-fi art.
I found more info on it! It's Brown's June 1924 cover to Scientific American.
Here's a larger version of the original artwork, too.
I wonder what structure is being added here.
why so silent good messieurs
I’m SEVERELY disappointed this post didn’t include the eye witness statement of the mirror crash incident in question
Deep-sea jellies, siphonophores, and more: MBARI's Southern California expedition 🌊🪼💫
From graceful jellies and sleek siphonophores to dazzling comb jellies and dancing worms, MBARI researchers are revealing the hidden diversity of delicate drifters in the deep. Our Biodiversity and Biooptics Team, led by Senior Scientist Steven Haddock, recently concluded a 10-day expedition from Monterey Bay to the Channel Islands aboard MBARI’s flagship research vessel David Packard to study the biogeography and physiology of gelatinous plankton.
Using MBARI’s remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Doc Ricketts, they observed and collected gelatinous plankton deep underwater in the ocean’s midnight zone. A specialized low-light camera developed by MBARI scientists and engineers allowed the team to record the remarkable bioluminescence displays of these deep-sea jellies in their natural habitat. They logged observations of several undescribed ctenophores, a new species of Erenna siphonophore with elaborate lures, and a siphonophore they had previously only seen in the waters of the Gulf of California, advancing efforts to catalog life in the deep ocean.
Expeditions like this one advance efforts towards a complete census of marine life and are critical to understanding ocean ecosystems, how they are linked, and how they might be changing. Learn more on our website.

Meet one of the ocean's biggest surprises. 🌊
Big red jellies can reach more than a meter (three feet) across. These jellies are covered in tiny, harpoon-like stinging cells that stun prey. Unlike most jellyfish, big red doesn't have long trailing tentacles. Instead, a cluster of finger-like oral arms beneath its bell helps it capture food.
Big red was first discovered off the central California coast in 1988, by MBARI staff. This jelly has been spotted across the Pacific Ocean, from Baja California to Hawaii to Japan.
The fact that an animal this large, with such a wide range, remained undiscovered for so long is a reminder of how little we've explored the deep sea—and how many incredible discoveries are still waiting to be found.
What if I was bloody and beaten on my knees while you (brainwashed) tried to kill me and instead of begging for my life I begged for you to come back to me because “I need you”, and that broke you out of your brainwashing spell thing.
But no homo.
dear smut writers,
to lave means to wash/bathe/lap at, and it's in basically every sex scene ever
a lathe is a machine that smoothes a spinning piece of wood or metal by cutting thin layers off it, and it's also in an unfortunate number of sex scenes
so when you say things like this:
I am imagining things like this:
Is this what they mean by CNC kink?
wasn’t a beautiful night. pesis is peeled

gender essentialism is soooo funny bc it's like "this is what women are like" and you're like "I've met women and many of them, if not the majority, have not been like that" and it's like "well women SHOULD be like that" and you're like "why should women be like that" and its like "because that's what women are like"

Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
Happy moon day to all who celebrate
This is your reminder to prep for Moon Day on July 20th.
Moon day Monday is SOON!!!!!
The Russians: BECAUSE WE GOT INTO SPACE FIRST!
MOON DAY
ITS TODAY
