i dont like how "trust-based" a lot of advanced math is. like, a lot of papers will at various points say "we did this calculation, and got this", (like, two steps in equation manipulation will be related in a very unclear way) and not show you the calculation. and i get it, typing up the calculation is annoying. but often, i will try to replicate the calculation, and will not be able to! and generally i assume this is because i am much worse at math than the author. but like. i guess i just have to take your word for it that the calculation works! this sucks! math isnt supposed to be like this! thats the whole point!
The worst part is when this happens *in a textbook*, i.e. the thing that is *supposed to be teaching you*. "The derivation has been left as an exercise for the reader" fuck you
yeah i mean the crazy thing about leaving it as an exercise for the reader without putting the answer in the back or something is like. if youre doing advanced math, theres a good chance an explicit derivation doesnt exist in public writing, literally anywhere.
You wouldn’t think that flamingoes are extremophiles just from looking at them. It’s like somebody tried to build the vertebrate equivalent of that fungus that lives inside nuclear reactors, and ended up with a gangly pink dinosaur with a spoon for a face.
For everyone in the comments asking how flamingos are extremophiles:
Flamingos can survive in low oxygen, high altitude, high temperatures, low temperatures, high alkaline, they can and will drink boiling water and they can be completely frozen at night and still get up the next morning
Don’t fuck with flamingos
….. Didn’t know most of that
Huh… so that’s why zoos don’t put them somewhere warm during winter.
Oh yeah, this leaves out what I *did* know about them–they can also survive hypersalinity. That is, water so salty it kills practically everything else–water so salty it burns your skin.
American flamingos just drink that shit
(animal death) this is a real undoctored photograph (*though the body was stood up for the shot) of a dead flamingo on the surface of lake natron, a lake so salty and so alkaline that it’s naturally carbonated like soda and would eat through your stomach lining if you drank from it.
When this photo went viral years ago, most people assumed this poor flamingo must have been killed by the lake.
It is actually the lake where 75% of its global population are hatched. This is a photo from the same lake:
Some species of flamingo actually subsist almost entirely on a diet of bacteria! In other words, there is a species of dinosaur that eats only bacteria and lives in lakes so toxic they would kill almost anything else—and it is best known to the average person as a kitschy lawn decoration.

RATING: RELIABLE
Flamingos can survive in high altitudes, hypersaline conditions, and caustic lakes.
Source: ‘All flamingo species have evolved to live in some of the planet’s most extreme wetlands, like caustic “soda lakes”, hypersaline lagoons or high-altitude salt flats.’
They can survive water so alkaline it burns human skin.
Source: ‘More than a million lesser flamingos breed in Tanzania’s Lake Natron, for instance, a lake fed by hot springs with water so alkaline that it can strip away human skin (one pioneering flamingo researcher named Leslie Brown spent months in Nairobi General Hospital after burning his legs wading out to observe where the birds nested).’
They can drink water at near-boiling temperatures.
Source: ‘They can drink water at near boiling point to collect freshwater from springs and geysers at lake edges. If no freshwater is available, flamingos can use glands in their head that remove salt, draining it out from their nasal cavity.’
The lakes they inhabit can freeze overnight, and the flamingos can survive once it thaws in the morning.
Source: ‘The birds may seem to epitomize the tropics, but they also live in the Andes, 15,000 feet above sea level, where they rest on lakes that freeze around them overnight.
“You’ll see them sitting there like snowballs, frozen on ice,” Dr. Arengo said. “And as the temperature warms up, they thaw out, fluff themselves up and go about their business.”’
The photo is indeed from Lake Natron, taken by photographer Nick Brandt. The content of the lake chemically preserves animal corpses that die there. You can see more photos of this here.
It is also true that 75% of Lesser Flamingos are hatches on Lake Natron.
Source: ‘The lake’s landscape is surreal and deadly—and made even more bizarre by the fact that it’s the place where nearly 75 percent of the world’s lesser flamingos are born.’
Some species of Flamingo eat cyanobacteria or algae.
Source: ‘Flamingos have very specialised diets. And their food is responsible for their famous pink colouration. The two species in Planet Earth II eat a lot of floating microscopic algae, which contains carotenoid pigments, the same types of chemical that make carrots orange. These pigments turn their feathers pink, orange and red – without them, flamingos would be white.’
… @todaysbird ??
yeah they’re just like that

Shad literally used to make videos like this (not a compliment).
Hey look I’m fully on board with Shad hate, but this comment is really unhelpful unless you tell me what the actual problem is
@freakpatrol:
Since the OP has helpfully turned off replies to ensure his presented victimhood remains pristine and cannot be argued against: do you think driving a basically unknown blog to deactivate due to death threats and threats of doxxing as a good thing?
Do you think the blog you're following with thousands of followers could not have reached out individually for clarification if it was an important concern he had, or if it was so unimportant as to not be worth DMing someone over, that it was not a conscious choice to expose the blog that criticised him to his followers to enable that kind of harassment.
The deactivated blog actually reblogged and apologised for the slightly snarky post and expanded on the specific issue (that shadiversity's early videos did not reference any literature and passed off a lot of speculation and downright factually incorrect information as factual @idrawtooslow fyi this was the issue referenced which was only outlined separately).
However rather than reblog THAT post which would demonstrate a constructive engagement with the issue, he simply allowed his followers such as yourself to drive a queer person off Tumblr for the sin of criticising a pobular blogger.
The OP having "good politics" doesn't change this is basically Elon Musk level social media behaviour.
. there's. there's no way blumineck is practically elon musk because people sent someone who was slightly rude to him death threats. like yeah they shouldn't have to have resorted to deactivation to avoid the swarmed of death threats, that's a bad thing that happened and it could have been better. but but there's NO way that makes blumineck as bad as a nazi trillionare. he just can't have the.blame for that.
blumineck didn't like. call for that to happen. this isn't a thing normal people think would happen. maybe he should like- not do it again, or something, but he's not Modern Day Satan for responding to a thing in a really polite and normal way with very clearly no harm intended and then Other People deciding in their own to send death threats. that's those peoples faults. undoubtedly. what is this
OK folks, this has gone WAY too far.
This is the first I’m hearing of this harassment because I don’t monitor my Tumblr NEARLY enough to see everything as it comes through. (I’m currently travelling, and it’s pretty much luck of the draw which notifications come through at the top when I open them). I still haven’t seen the response from the commenter because I wanted to address this before I went looking for it.
But I just want to say that I’m really sorry that this has happened. I did not expect that my followers will go after criticism in this way, and I’m incredibly disappointed to hear that people have been sending DEATH THREATS just because someone was a bit snarky to me.
To be clear, I NEVER either need or want any of my followers to send threats on my behalf. It’s not helpful, and it’s not acceptable.
I received a comment that left me feeling confused, and sought clarification. I did so publicly because the original comment was public and I wanted to see if others had the same or similar concern. (I honestly thought it would be more likely to end up with me getting barraged with criticism) There was no malice in my intent, and if I’d realised people would react the way they did then I absolutely would not have posted this. I will learn from this, but DAMN it shouldn’t have to come at this kind of cost.
I don’t really have the words for this right now, but I’m sad, I’m disappointed, and I’m extremely sorry.

Mordell as in The math guy from mordell weil theorem for elliptic curves?
Will humanity ever be free of the influence of Edna Mode? Can any of us so much as consider the character design for a hero or villain without her manifesting in the room, fully aware of our sins?
You know what, another layer of difficulty is when you’re thinking about villains, and the wise words of Megamind come into your head. You don’t just want your child to be just a regular villain. But how do you make your villain a Supervillain with no cape? Where is the drama? But Edna says no capes, you must deny them the flair. It is impossible to please them both, and it’s tearing this family apart.
you. you get it.

under US law, it's illegal for anyone who's not a member of a recognised native tribe to own an eagle feather. the penalty is a $100,000 fine.
14 years ago when I had recently moved to Alaska, I went hiking with an Aleut friend, and she pointed to a feather lying on the ground and said "hey that's a bald eagle tail feather, you should grab it!" and I was like "uhh I'm very white and that's very illegal" and she went "they're fuckin everywhere up here man. I have 20." so she grabs it off the ground and hands it to me and says "there, now it's a ceremonial gift from an indigenous person."
and I'm like, okay, cool, I guess this is how we do things in Alaska. nice.
so I keep this bald eagle tail feather around for years. display it in my home among other cherished memorabilia from places I've lived and visited, etc.
on a whim, I have just now looked it up. there is no exemption to that law for a ceremonial gift from an indigenous person. the last 7 years I lived in the US, I was technically a bald eagle poacher.
probably a good thing I don't intend to move back there anytime soon. I wonder what the statute of limitations is on bird crimes.
@freedomisscaryshit I'm fucking dying I think you forgot the word "feathers" in your tags?? or do you just wish you could grab whole ass eagles that land in your yard??
As an Indigenous person, it continues to astound me that there are such strict laws (written by White people) in our name, laws against...picking up things just found on the ground. Like, stop pretending this is "for" us. We don't want this.
so, for clarity, that's not what this is. the law against possessing feathers is an anti-poaching measure, derived from a North American treaty protecting certain migratory bird species from hunting. that treaty has an exemption for indigenous people to allow tribes that use eagle feathers in ceremonial or religious practices to continue doing so.
i used to collect feathers (illegally) as a teenager and the thing is that it's incredibly important for feathers from wild birds to be illegal to possess because it ensures that they never become fashionable to wear. the reason we passed the migratory bird act was because the american and european fashion industry was driving species to extinction in a timespan of years. not just decades. the ecological devastation of exporting birds for hats was absolutely insane and people were watching wetlands and forests and meadows just empty out in realtime. look at the wikipedia article for the plume trade.
the law against 'picking feathers up off the ground' means that you can't go shoot an eagle then sell the feathers on etsy by saying you 'just found them'. you can't own them no matter where they came from, which makes sure that they're not going to come from any birds killed and then secretly disposed of.
these laws, as harsh and ridiculous as they seem, saved flamingos, spoonbills, egrets, and all kinds of hawks and eagles from extinction. the minute these laws weaken and people can make money off killing them again, they're fucked.
this is one of those "no actually this regulation exists for a reason" laws much like work place safety and building fire codes (that Republicans keep trying to roll back) and is written in blood just like them as well. it's just not human blood this time, and the fact that people actually cared enough about long term future over short term profit to get it put in place is nothing short of astonishing. That it didn't get put in place in time to save several species is heart breaking.
When I am king, we will valorize sanitation workers the way we currently valorize the military
So heroic posters showing trashmen battling allegorical monsters? I'm down.
Yeah but that's just the beginning. I also want Sanitation Worker Discounts at every business and blockbuster movie propaganda glorifying sanitation work. I want random people to salute garbage collectors and thank them for their service. I want drivers who get impatient with the recycling truck and honk at it and swerve around it to become social pariahs
Why wait until you rule the world!
I umm... only have one drawing program on my phone and I'm not very adept at it. But voila! Sanitation worker fighting off a trash monster using a mop as a spear and a spray bottle with some form of cleaning solution as... another weapon. I couldn't think of a shield.

one may think "language" is french or spinach for "the nguage". this is a folk etymology myth, it is actually more like mile -> mileage. "How much language are you getting out ofthose words"
I regret to inform everyone that this is actually not that far off the real etymology. The 'langue' part of language comes from the latin 'lingua', meaning 'tongue', and the '-age' suffix is something the word picked up in old french as a suffix of action (like how a 'pilgrimage' is 'that thing pilgrims do'). So really it's more like 'what that tongue do'
Well, that's upsetting.
