a dead pet is a kind of dead wife if you think about it hard enough
living in one place for all your life can give you some strange feelings
a lot of things are the same as they've been for years and years, but a so much has changed to the point i can't exactly relive any memories too well anymore. things are out of place, things have appeared, things have disappeared, things have just... changed. i can see the ghost of some things, like i can vaguely see the warm lights on my ceiling from when i was nine and grieving; the ceiling is the same, but the lighting is different, and there are newer things on the ceiling that weren't there all those years ago. i can partially relive the drive home from a birthday party from when i was ten, but the road has changed and a convenience store has changed and things have disappeared and. it's so weird.
i find comfort in familiarity, in things that have stayed almost the same despite time marching onward. the renaissance fair is almost identical to how it was ten years ago, except for prices, of course. the carousel i grew up getting to go to and ride hasn't changed, at least not noticeably, for as long as i've known it. the van my parents drive hasn't changed too much, either, during my life. the big white raggedy stuffed bear i have hasn't changed too much besides becoming more crushed from my hugging it.
something about the things that don't change much or haven't changed gives me a sense of security. the nostalgia from an already bygone time when i felt more safe, from when i felt more real, is nice. especially since i've changed, too. i look in a mirror and can barely recognize myself sometimes. i'm not what i'm used to seeing anymore. i look good, i look like mostly how i wanted to look when i was a kid, but it's still weird. i need to develop more memories of myself like this, so maybe one day i can look at myself and not feel like i'm internally that same child while looking like a completely different entity. i want to recognize me as myself when i look at a mirror.
maybe this is why [or at least partially why] i enjoy darkness a lot. things feel more tangible in the dark, they feel more real. no matter how much things change, darkness doesn't do that a whole lot, it's a place where i can relive and remember things that happened without having to concentrate too hard. it feels safe, and comfortable. i feel at home, even when things are different.

Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.

as a teen, i was constantly harassed by adults enforcing ''dress codes'' on me. I very much experienced this as sexual harassment. I think this is one of many cases where people would more easily understand this as sexual harassment if I described it as if it happened to an adult.
imagine being on your lunch break, and your supervisor comes over to your table, tells you to stand up in front of everyone. they draw everyone's attention to your thighs. they tell you that you have broken the dress code because of the length of your shorts. they tell you to go change (so you do not get the rest of your lunch break). they do this every single day at lunch. every day. so you read the whole dress code front and back, and you choose your clothing carefully to not break it. you bring a cloth tape measure with you to work because they will not believe you. this time when your supervisor tells you that you're breaking dress code, you pull out your tape measure and show that you are within the limit. your supervisor says "I bet you wouldn't want me to bring you to the boss and let him measure it, would you?" it's clearly a threat: if you don't obey then you will be put alone in a room with your boss and he will touch your thighs. you don't know how to respond. you're taken out of lunch again.
this was my experience at school. replace supervisor with "teacher" and boss with "principal." this was sexual harassment. fuck dress codes.
