[image reads: “geology rocks, but geography is where it’s at”]
it's called a ball python because it is a python(🐍) that ball(🟠)
nothing in the rules says a python can't play basketball
I don’t hate the concept of ebooks per se but what bothers me is how our society is shifting from actually owning entertainment in tangible forms like books and CDs and DVDs and game discs, to having to download everything so basically we’ll get to the point where everything is intangible and all of our property can be taken away by a website crash.
#yeah this is mostly the problem#and stuff like. ebooks that can only be read on one companys app#music that can only be streamed from one place and doesnt let you actually download the files#stuff like that#like sometimes its like you cant tangibly have anything even your own digital file#idk where i was going with this but yeah its capitalism (via @ouidamforeman)
“Almost exactly ten years ago, you may remember, Amazon came stealthily along and deleted e-copies of 1984 (no seriously, they did) and Animal Farm from people’s Kindles — copies they’d already paid for and downloaded — because it turned out that there was a rights problem with the e-publisher. Jeff Bezos wound up apologizing all over himself and taking it all back and promising never to do that ever again, but the fact remains that Amazon has some kind of access to your Kindle files and can literally remove them, if they feel like it, which is downright creepy, and if it were your computer you would not like it one little bit.”
https://popula.com/2019/06/30/own-paper-books/
I’m sure that someone already said this in the notes, but you guys are aware that you don’t actually own e-books, e-movies, etc. Right? What you’re purchasing is a license to have that file on your device. Not the actual object.
I’ve also posted about it multiple times.
Plus, Amazon, Google, Kobo, B&N are all explicit in their user agreements that they have the right to terminate your account, seize your library, and delete anything and everything off of your account at any time, for any reason, without giving you anything in return, including paying you back.
Like, it super scary that they not only can do that, but are legally allowed to.
I’ve seen people suggesting using the program called Calibre to transfer and convert your files from whatever program you purchase them on, so that if one of those companies do decide to be a dick, you will retain your e-copies safe and sound on your hard drive. Just don’t be an asshole and post those copies to pirate sites.
So read your content agreements and digital ownership laws cause they’re not great.
Paper books still have their uses.
And that very fact, my friends, is why products like Epubor Ultimate DRM removal tool (my personal choice) are legal to write and sell and use.
https://www.epubor.com/drm-removal-tools.html
Because yes, the terms of service sure say that. But every time they’ve /tried/ on a significant scale, they’ve been challenged and backed down. And every time they tried to stop DRM removal tools from being made and sold, they’ve failed. What they’re doing relies on keeping off enough toes that a significant bloc never gets pissed enough to push through a class action suit.
So, yes, absolutely, know this and, if you (like me) have book-gasms over having my library of 2000 books always at my fingertips to read whatever I like, get Calibre (https://calibre-ebook.com/) and then get one of the DRM removal applications. Jailbreak your library, back it up in at least three locations, and then pass this tip on in the joyful knowledge that all the major distributors are praying you don’t tell anyone else how easy this is.
Amazon recently changed their file format a few months ago, and the old Epubor doesn’t support it anymore, just the ultimate. And I think it’s possible to use Calibre extensions for the new files, but it’s an incredibly unwieldy process.
Another reason to support indie platforms like Gumroad which not only pay their authors more (my $1.99 books give me $1.53 there compared with Amazon’s 70 cents) but often give you an actual downloadable pdf file that is yours, instead of something the site can sneak back into and delete.
This!
I sell my books through Pulley and an e-store back end that gives you the files, no DRM. You can still get them from Amazon, but if you buy directly from authors you get the actual files, and the author sees a lot more of the money.

Ebooks also aren’t subject to the resale doctrine, which is the whole reason used bookstores and libraries can exist. The resale doctrine comes from a ruling from the Supreme Court that says look, once you buy a thing, the person you bought it from no longer has any say in what you do with it. You can resell it for a dollar, you can give it away, you can lend it to people and send collection agencies after them if they don’t give it back, because you bought it. It’s yours.
With ebooks you’re buying not the object (there isn’t an object) but a license - essentially you’re renting the right to have that ebook on your devices. You can’t resell something you’re renting, just like you can’t sell your apartment to someone else while you’re renting it from a landlord, and you can only lend it if the leaseholder gives you permission. (Which is why you have to place a hold on library ebooks and wait for someone else to return them, even though there’s no practical reason why thousands of people can’t be reading the same ebook at any given time.)
I just wanna point out that all this ebook licensing bullshit applies to public libraries as well as private users. So theres a whole shitstorm of Discourse in the GLAM world over ebooks because sometimes libraries cant afford to keep up the subscription to the company and then the company will delete the entire holdings that the library had. Unlike paper books where they would have been able to KEEP the things they paid for. Licensing bullshit is also the reason for restrictions on how many ebook “copies” can be “checked out” by users.

Hm why do my paints smell fishy
It should 100% be illegal for companies to make you give them your payment information when you sign up for a free trial version of their product. It is not necessary and there is no good fucking reason for them to do it. It’s blatantly just so they can steal forgetful customers’ money.
oh hey, thanks for reminding me to cancel a free trial i had going on.
Reblog to save an unnecessary charge cause it also reminded me to cancel a trial lol

the positioning of transfem hypervisibility and transmasc invisibility as two opposing forces is so insidious and dangerous because it reinforces the status quo where trans men's voices are already valued over trans women's
trans women can never speak because we're already apparently soaking up all the attention... nevermind that the "attention" is fearmongering government propaganda
trans women can take up no space, because any amount of attention is further proof that we hog the spotlight from trans men. our visibility is thought of as coming at the cost of that of trans men. so if a trans man speaks over us or silences us, he's just seen as balancing the scales. but our visibility and theirs are not actually opposing forces. a decrease in visibility for trans women is not an increase for trans men. it's just a decrease
It also assumes that we're actually getting space. It's like, we have wanted signs up so we don't get to have any other flyers up.
No one sees our opinions, or takes, or love, or joy. They see ONLY that we're a big boogey man. Arguably, we're not hyper visible, we're hyper targeted. Every thing I've ever seen as Transmasc Invisibility, mostly applies to Trans Women too

Coca Cola flavored Oreos taste like if you could eat clipart
These taste like an abstract concept. Summer Vacation flavored. Yankee Candle ass cookie.
this just keeps being relevant
This skit absolutely slaps forever but I have to tell you guys the secret.
The weird Oreos don’t sell… but the weird Oreos just being around and visible make people buy more regular Oreos.
That’s why.
The weird Oreos DO sell, but my housemate is the one buying them all
I think they add an important element of randomness to the environment. My father in law bought 6 or 7 boxes of the Selena Gomez Oreos so he could set a Selena Gomez Oreo alarm to go off mid workday and then say to his coworkers, "Oh, my Selena Gomez Oreo alarm is going off!" and unearth from his locker his 6 or 7 boxes of Selena Gomez Oreos so he and his coworkers could distribute them around the neonatal ICU ward where they work. He said it livened up an otherwise extremely dreary day.
