I recently learned an old French euphemism for bisexuality. It means to be powered "by sail and steam," and it absolutely comes from a specific flavor of 19th-century ship.

HMS Terror and Erebus were bisexual, you heard it here first.

I was supposed to be having an amazing vacation in Italy and the South of France, but just over a month ago—only a few days before my trip 😭—a stranger shoved me from behind at a train station. I was thrown hard onto the concrete floor and ended up with a fractured left elbow and a cracked left knee, which led to surgery and a whole lot of recovery. (See my Instagram for the full story)

I probably won’t be able to make handmade pieces until next month or later, but I can manage packing and shipping printed items, so I’ve reopened my Etsy shop! 😊

This is false.

The grain of truth being misrepresented here is that, when asked if they identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans, or something else, roughly 6% of LGBTQ+ folks identified as “something else”, including identities such as asexual, pansexual, or queer. The crucial word here, of course, is “or”.

Nearly half of people who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bi, or trans (and the majority of them under 50) still say they consider themselves queer. It just isn’t instead of identifying as a lesbian, gay, bi, or trans.

The fact that we also have a more specific label doesn’t invalidate our use of “queer” as a general or umbrella term.

And certainly, there is a correlation between age and self-identification as queer. But some other interesting and important details from this data reveal a bit more.

The first is that there is a co-correlation in younger populations, of both being more likely to identify as LGBTQ+ to begin with, and being more likely to identify as queer. The former is generally attributed to more accepting attitudes around LGBTQ+ identity removing the stigma of questioning gender / sexuality & identifying as anything other than straight & cisgender; given that, I don’t think it’s a stretch to argue it also explains the latter. Because “queer” has lost a lot of the bite and stigma it once had (in no small part to the work of out-and-loud queer elders paving the way by reclaiming the term), people are now more likely to identify as it.

The second, which I personally find even more interesting, is that there’s actually a much much stronger correlation between identifying as both queer and trans (82% of trans people identify as queer, Pew) than there is between identifying as “queer” and being young (59% of LGBTQ adults ages 18-29 identify as queer).

So, in addition to carrying a lot of the same tone and argumentation style as trans-exclusionary rhetoric, the group actually being pushed aside by this actually includes roughly 80% of trans people.

You are at the grocery store. You pick up a nice, girthy zucchini. You head over to the oils and pick up a thing of olive oil. Then a packet of condoms.

Satisfied with your selections, you head to the cashier. As you place the items on the conveyor, a voice shouts: "DON'T SELL THOSE! THAT'S GOING UP A BUTT!"

And then for some reason, the cashier agrees. Then the guy who shouted, this fuckass guy in a suit, marches up to the counter and starts demanding that the store never sell any vegetables that could be put up a butt. He starts out pointing at the zucchinis and cucumbers and carrots, but you heard what he said: he's effectively banning every vegetable, just enforcing it selectively.

You ask the cashier if he's corporate or something. The cashier says no. The manager? No. He works here at least? No.

Who the fuck is he, then?

Well, the cashier explains, he's the bank manager from the next street over. He's taken up a moral crusade against vegetables that might go into rectums and if they don't obey him, he won't take anyone's paychecks or any money from any store that opposes him. And his bank is the only bank in the region, so it'd be a huge hassle for the business and the employees.
