Cultural Fashion: Sokkaâs Choker
From what Iâve researched, chokers are traditionally worn by some Native American tribes rather than by Inuit, who traditionally prefer looser fitting necklaces. But Sokkaâs particular choker is identical to traditional Inupiat bracelets, which are made from walrus or whale ivory.
Which means that Sokka might just be wearing a bracelet as a choker. And I canât think of anything more perfectly Sokka than using an item for something beyond its intended purpose. I can totally imagine how the whole thing started:
Mother Kya: âOne day, when Katara gets married, Iâll give her this necklace that Gran-Gran gave to me.â
Lil Sokka: âNo fair! Why donât I get anything?â
Hakoda: âSokka, this necklace is for girls only.â
Lil Sokka: âFine, Iâll just make my own necklace.â *ties his bracelet around his neck and immediately starts choking*
Gran-Gran: *sighs* Iâll get more stringâŚ
