Performance art is good and listening to people who don't understand art talk about performance art is a unique type of torture.
Which is probably a thought that could be the core of a pretty fun, masturbatory piece of performance art.
Oh. Oh actually. Actually.
Okay, so the name of the piece is "It's what you make of it" and you have a setup that's a cross between a zoltar fortune-teller machine and a crank penny press. The room the piece is performed in has a warning about recording the performance and cautions the viewer to only interact with the piece of they consent to being recorded and photographed.
The artist is in the box, made up as a marionette and the viewer can use pulleys and switches to position the artist's limbs and to change the background and lighting of the box and can type a short prompt for the artist to repeat and act out verbatim.
The viewer has to drop a token (provided as part of the piece) into a coin slot and work a crank to complete the prompt. While the artist is acting out the prompt, the prompt is printed on a photo strip that includes a picture of the prompter (taken by a hidden webcam on the booth). One copy of the prompt and photo is spit out along with the cranked token (which has the phrase "it's what you make of it" and an image of a clown pressed into it) for the viewer to keep, one copy of the prompt and photo is spit out inside the booth where the artist can collect it after completing the prompt.
What the artist is going to do with the photo strip is not explained, the artist doesn't speak or move except as a response to a prompt.
People will prompt the artist to say "this is stupid." People will prompt the artist say explicit phrases, or to swear incessantly. People will prompt the artist to say slurs.
And they will walk away with their prompt attributed to them with their photo and a coin they used their energy to mint into a reminder that the art is what they made of it. And their creation is documented in the hands of the artist as well. What did they put into the world? What did they decide to say when they had a chance to say anything? What were they comfortable saying before they realized that someone would quote them on it? What did they make of it, and how would they feel if their photo was attached to their prompt in a book or video or somewhere that people might see it?
How did they approach the piece? How would they approach it a second time?
Also the artist goes hog fucking wild on the prompts. They're acted out *loudly* and melodramatically with as much emotion as the artist can put into the performance.
And whenever the machine is not in motion the artist is still and vacant, but the performance of the prompt involves as much eye contact and emoting as possible.
The piece is dead and meaningless until you approach it, and as soon as you start interacting with it it should become disconcertingly alive with your intention.
That sounds like an actual, literal nightmare I had as a kid where I fucked up giving instructions to a mimic-biological construct and didn't say anything b/c I didn't want to get in trouble and the construct was killed for not following the instructions correctly.
I absolutely would never want to be put in a situation where someone couldn't refuse my orders.
Well. Clearly as performance it it works already. I need to go drink of a cup of tea about this to stop being upset. I'm sure it would also make other people feel things they perhaps didn't realize they were going to feel.

being crammed into dresses that dont fit and feminine outfits that i didnt like. shoved to sit pretty and not behave like that because thats unlady like. itchy clothes and pushed boundaries that no one listens to. its depressing. i wanted to wear overalls and dig in the mud. get hurt and scream. maybe wear a skirt with frills and bows but never pink and never anything but cotton. to not get yelled at for being a person. and every day i get to take a peice of lost childhood back. but its not the same. it never will be the same. what kind of kid were you growing up?

And yet somehow this is my first time kicking it!
I will say that the vast majority of people I know who experienced childhood abuse or neglect growing up tend to not conceptualize it as such, often for long periods of time. and I think that's partially because of how the specific ways that families abuse and neglect their kids are normalized within that family, like, just like... I often will be talking to someone about their childhood and they'll be like "but my parents think it's normal" and its like well no shit your parents thought that was a normal way to raise a child, the fact that they thought that was a normal way to raise a child is the problem.
and I think it's also partially because... there is this pattern I see in families that produce traumatized kids, wherein the narrative of who the child is is ultimately owned by the family. like, your parents own Knowledge Of Your Self. any attempts to assert expertise in the field of who you are or what you experience is met with derision mockery punishment etc.
this can present in a variety of ways, and some of them look fairly benign, including things like "my parents think I'm this kind of person, but they don't really understand that I am a different kind of person, and every time I try to assert the person I actually am, they argue with me and try to overlay their version of me on to reality instead of listening to me about who I am and what my experiences are"
and I think that depending on how you experience that, it can range from being Just Annoying in some cases to, in many cases, being quite traumatic in and of itself. because it means that you have been trained not to believe that your understanding of yourself and your experiences is ultimately something that is owned by you. which I think is incredibly incredibly damaging both on a personal and relational level. ownership of our own self narrative is a REALLY important thing for human beings to have.
functionally I think that this often presents as an inability to understand what your own needs even are, and a willingness to simply assume that whatever you are feeling at any given time must be the incorrect reaction, especially in the face of an assertion by someone else that the correct reaction would be different than the reaction you are having.
those are both very long-lasting relational harms that go on to cause more harm in the future, because it is impossible to have a truly mutually trusting and healthy interpersonal relationship with someone when you are not aware of what your own needs are, and are certainly not capable of communicating them.*
*I did not say this to undervalue important intimate relations that we do develop with others when we are in this stage, because obviously everyone is capable of forming very strong and often very positive bonds with the people around them, but I think that there is a level of trust and safety that you cannot reach with someone to whom you cannot express your needs. and that includes yourself.
as someone whos parent did do this shit heres what it looks like.
i can not rationalize how much food an adult can eat in 2 week. i when asked what i want will draw blanks. i dont know what i want. i dont have a concept of what would bring me joy. intuitively i know i like genshin and pokemon and furrys and chocolate. you ask me if i want something for my birthday and i wont give you an answer. ill draw nothing. "i dont know nothing really. whatever you want to get me is fine ill like it either way." this is a true but not accurate statement. i have wants and needs but once i try and pull that info up when asked i cant bring up anything.
my friends know and will just ask if i want x. or if i want y. because i can yes no answers alot better then i can "yes i would prefer x over y because y is gross" i can point and choose between options they pick but hardly my own.
this also correlates to me not being able to ask for help in any capacity. when alls that happens is anger when you need help you learn to do that shit yourself. to deal with it. so if shit hits the fan i deal with it untill i break. or untill friends notice somethings wrong. my friends know me and also know its frustrating but they make it known that they are here for me. i can ask and sometimes they will just do and help. when i started moving my friend just asked my address and sent me moving bags. another helped me make some food and get unpacked.
and the fun part is that some days i think that it wasnt that bad. that the shit that happened to me wasnt truly abuse just unchecked anger or a bad day that day. just an "oh well maybe she was just sad that day that why she didnt love me" and i get to make a conscious effort to say "no accualy thats abuse."
