made a post about how I'm relieved and excited to be alive in 2026 and how I'm glad I exist in a time where music and education and communication are so expansive and accessible and said post wasn't even up for a single hour before someone started declaring that actually there are evil revolting breaches of human rights happening right now. not even an hour
I am asking with all the kindness I can muster to please let people tentatively express their hope for the future without needing to remind them that actually, sometimes life is terrible and horrific. I am aware. please trust me I am so aware. I am alive on planet earth. it is hard to not be aware. I just also want to enjoy being alive. I don't have to be constantly miserable in order to care about other people. jesus fucking christ

I will never get over how normalized the Hamas red triangles are. Saw a post earlier from a positivity blog sharing Twitter screenshots where the poster was encouraging workers to discuss pay with each other (a GOOD thing) and he had two Hamas triangles in his user name and its just like. Cool. Cool cool cool you're in favor of justice and equality so long as it doesn't apply to (((da joos)))
for me it doesn't even have to do with hamas' antisemitism, tbh. you don't even need to go there. you just need to look at their inter-palestinian actions. hamas' regime in the gaza strip is... literally textbook fascism. no elections in nearly 20 years. kidnapping of "dissidents". torture of "dissidents". public execution of "dissidents" (all without trial, not that it matters much). violent dispersion of protests (the few protests that DO happen). production of propaganda tv shows aimed at KIDS that glorify violence and suicide for a "greater purpose"? there's an entire generation in the strip that has never known any way of living that isn't under authoritarian rule. and THEN those same people on xitter with the triangle emojis go on and pretend that they're antifa. honey, if you've bootlicking hamas, at least own your own pro-fascism stance. you're a tankie at best. don't pretend otherwise.
anyways here's butter 💛

“It is troubling to see that attitudes towards gender equality are not more positive," said Julia Gillard of King’s College London.
>Particularly among Gen Z, our data shows an interesting duality: they are both the group most likely to agree that women who have a successful career are more attractive to men but are simultaneously most likely to agree that a wife should always obey her husband and that a woman should never appear too self-sufficient or independent.
Incredibly stupid things are happening
I know these two things seem contradictory, but there’s nothing a conservative man loves more than to tear off an angel’s wings. There are plenty of women that would willingly choose the obedient SAHM lifestyle, but these kinds of men always seem to go for the opposite. Why? Because it’s a power play. There’s no need to break a horse that’s already broken, and that would do nothing to validate that man, his ego, and his place in a world he sees as designed for him.

The world has moved on

Douglas Adams wrote, "Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works. Anything that's invented between when you’re 15 and 35 is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it. Anything invented after you're 35 is against the natural order of things."

I think about this quote whenever I get angry at the technology around me. When I rail against the Great Enshittening, am I simply committing the sin of nostalgia ("Nostalgia is a toxic impulse" -J. Hodgman)? I am, after all, old.
I've written before how conservatives' yearning for "simpler times" is really just a wish to be a child again. The reason times seemed simpler during your childhood is that you were a child, and if your parents did their job, they shielded you from a lot of the complexity of their adulthood so you could enjoy your childhood:

That's where the "National Customer Rage Survey" comes in. It's been surveying a panel of 1,000 representative consumers every three years for a decade, continuing a research project that started in 1976. The survey measures respondents' attitudes towards the businesses they deal with, and as of 2025, it's fair to say, customers are pissed:
https://customercaremc.com/2025-national-customer-rage-study/
We're experiencing more problems with the products and services we use. Those problems are more severe, they make us angrier, and they produce lingering stress. More and more, we are seeking revenge on the businesses that piss us off.
So it's not just me, an old man yelling at the cloud. The world is getting shittier.
The latest Customer Rage Survey inspired The Guardian's Heather Timmons to launch a new investigative series looking at how fucked up everything is. Her inaugural installment is very good, and it's drawn a massive reader response:
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2026/jun/04/us-consumer-rage-prices-economy
I spoke with Timmons this week about the series. She told me she's been deluged with emails from readers who feel that the world is different now – and many of them cite my work on enshittification. Timmons wanted to know what advice I had for her readers. I told her that I don't think you can solve this as a consumer, because this isn't a market problem, it's a political problem, and shopping isn't politics:
https://pluralistic.net/2026/05/21/purity-culture/#stop-fucking-that-chicken
Later, Timmons forwarded one of those emails to me. It gave an eloquent and evocative account of just how rancid the vibe is these days. The writer said that when they and their spouse encounter this rot, they cite Stephen King's Dark Tower novels, quoting the oft-repeated phrase from that series: "The world has moved on."
At this point, I should warn you that the following contains some Dark Tower spoilers, so if you're planning to read a decades-old (but very good) dystopian western/science fiction crossover series, and if spoilers bug you, this might not be the essay for you.
Spoiler alert!
i listen to rant reviews of books sometimes and idk why bc every time they seem to boil down to “i don’t like this genre” or “this book makes me uncomfortable and that is bad” like i know negative hot takes bring in the views and it’s cathartic to rant about bad art AND it’s okay to criticize how a subject or character is portrayed in fiction but man. Sometimes a book is simply not your cup of tea! and you can move on with your day about it
like recently i watched this rant review of an adult fiction book where the reviewer said something like “kids often read these books so it’s really harmful to romanticize abusive relationships” sorry but no! the author wrote this book for adults and it’s not their problem if a child picks up the book instead. a novel for adults assumes other adults can separate “situation that is sexy to some people in real life” vs “situation that is sexy to some people but only in fiction and warrants a 911 call in real life”, and choose what they want to read accordingly.
we don't need the left's answer to joe rogan we don't need the democratic d*nald t*ump we don't need fetterman 2.0!!! stop pushing these hasan piker graham platner stupid evil grifter men!!! stop selling out the democratic party's core constituencies (women, black people, and jewish americans) because a certain loud minority faction of white male commentators and their white male followers feel emasculated by the fact of those constituencies!!! oh my fucking god!!!

"don't assign human morality to non human things" is so true except when it comes to printers. they know what they are, they understand dilemmas and ethics and morality. they choose to be how they are, they choose to be evil, at their very core they are rotten
