Really neat video!
CORE CONCEPT: What is spinning? 3:01–3:31
THE TECHNIQUE: 5:21-7:00
How to add twist using a pencil: 3:35
Hand position 3:49 - 5:20
How much fiber you’ll want to work with 4:33
How to do it: 5:21
Why it works: (demonstration with a roll of toilet paper): 7:54
Definitions:
Drafting: preparing processed wool to be spun (Processing may include washing, dying, combing, carding, etc).
Staple length: the length of each “hair” of wool (1:49)
Other major concepts (unprofessional wording courtesy of me):
What kind of wool will be unwieldy and challenging to spin when you are learning (00:38 - 1:04)
Combed top = fibers are arranged parallel 1:06 - 1:13
Stretching out the fibers so that they pull past each other and you have a less dense length of fiber: 1:37
Finding the staple length of processed fibers: 2:27
Fibers drifting vs fibers locked in place 3:01-3:31
How twist turns fragile fiber to stronger yarn, how you add it, and how it can travel up into your drafted fiber 3:00
How twist will travel up into drafted fiber (and how kinking is normal): 7:02
