Seeking escape
Those of you who notice such things will know that in a little less than two weeks, it's going to be a year since @petermorwood departed this plane of existence.
As the date's been getting closer, I'm becoming increasingly clear (due to mood swings and sleep disturbances and other such stuff) that it would be a really good thing for me if I don't have to live through this first anniversary of his loss anywhere near the house where he breathed his last.
For that day, and ideally a couple/few days on either side of it, I really need to get away from here.
So that's my plan, if I can get all this to come together (with everybody's help). ...It's not like any brief escape will get the pain to stop, you know? That's years away... if ever. But at least this move will prevent a short-term crisis, and allow me (after the really painful day has passed) to start getting back to what around here now passes for "standard operating procedure"—meaning writing, and doing other work, and getting on with the rest of the current form of life—as quickly as possible.
What I have in mind is to spend the days on either side of May 9th—and the day itself—as far away from the cottage as physical issues will allow me to travel. Let's think of it as a long weekend, an hour or two's flight away. To manage that, though, I need to boost sales at the Ebooks Direct store over the days to come. If the necessary funds manifest themselves over the course of this week, I'll have time to make the necessary arrangements.
So can I get those of you who see this post to reblog it, and bring the Ebooks Direct store to people's notice as widely as possible? ...As numerous ebook bundles are available at discount prices. (There are more than show in the slide below: that's just a snapshot of how the front-page carousel looks.)
...And if none of these appeal (or if you've got them already and want to give them to somebody else): hey, there are gift cards! (I finally managed to get these things organized correctly...) 😅 They come in per-bundle versions, or in a number of cash values to suit your preference.
Finally: if you've already got too many ebooks, or otherwise just prefer to drop a little something into the kitty to help me escape for a few-ish days, here's my Ko-Fi.
Support Diane Duane
...So let's see if this can be pulled off. And for all your past help, and assistance to come: thanks, friends. I appreciate you so much... as your voices, heard daily, are pretty much all that makes the local silence bearable.
Thanks again.
Guys, I think this might be more upsetting than chocolate guy.😭

Paul Krugman is right! In his post today, he stated that immigration to the United States isn’t just slowing -- it’s collapsing. And it’s no
A bird explaining to a hedgehog crossing so it doesn’t die.
!!! ok but that’s legitimately what it’s doing!! That’s a corvid right there (looks like a hooded crow, to be precise), which means it’s intelligent enough to recognize, a) cars are dangerous and streets should be treated with a certain degree of caution, b) this car’s slowing down for them–cars do that sometimes–which means they’re not in imminent danger, so it doesn’t have to fly away just yet, c) that hedgehog’s still gonna get killed if it doesn’t MOVE, FAST (cars can change speed very quickly and the hedgehog’s still in the way), and almost certainly also d) if the bird does nothing it gets a free lunch.
Y’all, Y’ALL. This bird is consciously deciding to put itself in danger in order to save the life of a very stupid creature. A creature which, if the bird did nothing, could be free food.
i can’t - look if you follow me you know I have a thing for corvids, but this is - like!!! People are always saying “ah yes they have sub-human intelligence and don’t consider anything that isn’t immediately necessary for their own survival/pleasure,” but! Whether or not it can do philosophy, this crow is clearly demonstrating compassion. Even if it’s just the kind of compassion a toddler shows to a snail, a social creature that instinctively recognizes the potential for emotion in other beings, that’s still huge and cool and important and corvids!!! are! neat!!!
They’re incredibly smart! And kind!!!
in these trying times, videos like this salve my beaten and broken heart.
To add to this: you can brown butter and then chill it and it will go back to its solid state. You can then use it like regular cold butter or (if you let it come to room temperature) soft butter.
There is a minor caveat: butter has some water in it, this is what boils off when you are browning it. If you are substituting browned butter in a recipe that would be sensitive to this you might need to take that into account. However I use solid browned butter in my chocolate chip cookies without any changes and it works great.

Some footage from the leaf waistcoat video. (Music is Les Feuilles Jaunes by Franz Gordon from EpidemicSound)
Consider this a sequel to this morning’s post talking about that SOS from that woman.
To kidnap people, starve them, beat them, torture them and even rape the whole taking their personal belongings? HOW does someone NOT being here “legally” justify that EVIL treatment?? Because guess what fuck sticks? NO ONE but Native Americans are here legally.
But thankfully a group called Haven Watch is formed to help these victims. You can donate if you can but if you can’t just spread the word!
No One Walks Alone
My mom and her teacher friends have a similar group here in New York and me and my friends have a similar kind of group going on.
Because this is NOT about differing opinions BUT of what’s morally right and I don’t want to look in the mirror 20 years from now regretting not what j could have done.

Thousand Layer Apple Cake (Invisible Apple Cake) A custardy, soft, apple-packed loaf cake with a crisp exterior, almost like a sweet apple terrine. Ingredients Apples 6–8 x Apples (sweet, crisp, slightly tart varieties such as Pink Lady or Granny Smith) 1 x Orange (zest and juice Batter 2 x Eggs 70g x Caster Sugar 30g x Melted Butter 120ml x Milk 1tsp x Vanilla Extract or Vanilla Bean Paste ½tsp x Ground Cinnamon ¼tsp x Ground Nutmeg 75g x Plain/All-Purpose Flour Finish Warm Apricot Jam (for glazing) Icing Sugar (for dusting) Method Prepare the Apples Peel 6–8 apples. Cut each apple in half and remove the cores. Thinly slice the apples about 1–2 mm thick. Use a mandolin for best results and be very careful, it is very sharp. If slicing with a knife, ensure the slices are as thin and even as possible. Place all sliced apples into a large mixing bowl. Add Orange Zest and Juice Add the zest of one orange to the apples. Squeeze the juice from the orange into the bowl. The zest adds most of the flavour. The juice marinates the apples and prevents discolouration. Use your hands to mix thoroughly until every slice is completely coated. Set the apples aside. Make the Batter In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and caster sugar until pale and the sugar is fully dissolved. Add the melted butter, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg and whisk until smooth. Add the plain flour and whisk until just combined. The batter will be thin, this is correct. Combine Apples and Batter Pour the batter over the bowl of sliced apples. Mix thoroughly so all slices are evenly coated in the batter. Prepare the Tin Line a loaf tin using two strips of parchment: One strip across the width. One long strip lengthwise. Leave overhang on the sides for easy lifting later. Assemble the Cake Transfer the coated apple slices into the tin. You can simply tip them in and press down randomly, or Arrange slice by slice for the best visual and structural result. Pack the apples in tightly and compactly. If any batter remains in the bowl, pour it over the top of the apples. Bake Preheat oven to 170°C (338°F). Bake the loaf for about 1 hour. After 40–45 minutes, check the colour: If browning too quickly, loosely cover with foil to prevent over-browning. Cool and Glaze Once baked, the top should be caramelised, puffed, and slightly risen. It will sink back down as it cools, this is normal. Let the cake cool in the tin for 15 minutes. Brush the top with warm apricot jam for a shiny finish. Allow the cake to cool completely before lifting out and slicing.
