How do you write healthy parent-child relationships?

this might be more response than you want, but interesting (and kinda depressing when you think about it) fact: there’ve been a bunch of research studies where parents have been asked what they think makes a healthy parent-child relationship, and they tend to like…not answer the actual question because they think they’re being asked what good parenting is, which is not the same. so they talk about things like helping kids with homework and making sure they eat well. children, on the other hand, usually respond to the same question with stuff that’s literally just the definition of healthy relationships generally. affection, honesty, respect, spending time together, sharing interests. and the real kicker is, objectively, we know that’s the kind of stuff that actually has a much better impact not only on whether or not the relationship is strong and positive but also the kid’s overall happiness and psychological health.

so, if you want to write a character who’s really intent on being a Good Parent you’d have them putting massive effort into making their kid Grow Up Right, worrying about shit like if they have The Right Friends and they’re spending Enough Time Outside. but if you want to write a good relationship, just make parent and kid laugh together and respect boundaries and be emotionally supportive, like you would when writing a solid pair of friends or romantic couple.

I think the most charitable interpretation of this is that people connect to characters that are like them, and that the experiences of Blackness is so alien to them that the White characters are the only ones that White people connect with. Combine that with the fact that Tumblr is so White as a platform, and you get this issue.

It’s still bad and racist, but it is understandable. People should still do better though. (I’m not trying to justify, I’m trying to come up with an explanation)

by far the weakest arguments in favor of immigration are the ones that focus on "labor shortage"

like, believe it or not immigration is actually good because it's generally preferable for people to have freedom of movement (and generally preferable to avoid wasting resources on restricting freedom of movement when those resources could be better spent elsewhere) not because business owners can benefit from exploiting immigrant labor-which does not help immigrants (who believe it or not also want to be paid a living wage) and does not help domestic born workers.

and frankly, when people make critiques of immigration that focus on how it might affect wages and employment, you should be countering that by offering methods to protect wages and employment that are more effective than anti-immigration policy (for example job guarantees, minimum wage, better labor protection overall, etc) not dismissing those concerns as unimportant or, worse, framing low-paid labor as some kind of benefit.

if you do the latter, you've made it clear that you don't actually care about the well-being of immigrants.

My nephew is very allergic to eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame. Last year my sister discovered all hot dogs and hamburger buns now contain sesame. Not "may contain", but listed in the ingredients. This year basically every brand of sliced bread also now contains sesame, making it very difficult to find bread items he can eat.

They're just adding it to their products, so they can just list it as an ingredient and not bother with worrying about cross contamination. And they aren't even bothering with telling anyone. Capitalism is going to kill us all.
