not to do more ryland grace loneliness theory on a wednesday night but like. to want people is to want something. to want friendship is to want something. grace sees himself as someone who doesn’t want, and he especially does not want deep interpersonal connection and he PRIDES himself on this lack of desire for something he believes he cannot have- it’s the logical move. he’s logical. and what he THINKS he’s doing is seeing other people have those things and going “well it’s fine i’ll never have that, i didn’t want it anyway” when rather what he is actually doing is being repeatedly offered those things and declining them. and this is a REJECTION OF OTHERS and it is HURTFUL to them and something that i wish was talked about more in grace character analysis is that he hurts the people around him through that rejection. because nobody is walking around thinking wow dr grace probably didn't come to my housewarming party because of his self isolationist tendencies and fear of intimacy, they're probably thinking damn dr grace thinks i SUCK i wonder what i did to make him not like me... you are not an island, motherfucker! blow out the candles and WANT something!
