New to me at this point: 1. the copyright law based reasoning that distracting people with the impractical idea of being replaced ect means less negotiation for actual control of content they do make. 2. Scraping of information for data is not actually unethical it's the method of scraping and the use of that data that is the problem (see generic search engine functionality as an indexing tool or research studies as neutral examples of data scraping)

Ideas that aren't new to me (and that i also came to on my own understandjng/observation prior to this) but basically make the bulk of the book so far: 1. it's not what tech does it's who it does it to and who it does it for 2. It is better to have agency of thought and action using a technological tool than to be the dehumanised operator of an automated tool's functions 3. The anti-hype narratives that are fed by anti-ai sentiment are as useful to the people selling ai in their goal of presenting it as a powerful alfinancial asset to shareholders-who are the true target of ai marketing not the average person

Notably missing SO FAR in my read: the exploitative/destructive lens of critique. There was a section where the way he talked about the struggle to feel allied with call centre employees made me skeptical of broader class based criticism as a possibility in this book since the abusive labour conditions for customer support or amazon workers mostly pass in pithy statements about bottles of piss. At this point 11 chapters in neither the "mechanical turk" nature of maintaining ai, nor the scope of impact to hardware or ecology as a result of the manufacturing and implementation demands have been covered. The focus seems to be mostly limited to white collar work so far. Nevermind chapter 12 mentions both these things i crossed out

Overall i would think of this as the lightly humorous plain language explainer of the overall problems and uses cases of the current ai bubble that you recommend to your relative or co-worker who isn't super tech savvy to sum up a lot of general points and issues
