I am once again begging people to realize that AI checker doesn’t work. it’s never worked. it’s notoriously known to have flagged human-made works as AI and AI-generated works as human-made. and by feeding it people’s works, you are feeding more works to AI, because apparently the machine itself is AI.

My students have come across this website many times in their travels. Please note the buttons that say to "humanize your text".

This "AI checker" is not an AI checker. It is a random number generator that will automatically give you 80-100% on any text you run through it. It may or may not even be 'scanning' anything or adding it to an LLM source itself. I am inclined to think not, because I think the only reason this website exists is to sell a service that uses some version of "humanizing" technology meant to help people who are using an AI bypass ostensibly legitimate AI-checkers.

TurnItIn's AI checker has a more vested interest in getting it right than others, but even it is not always great.

The best things I have found as a teacher to detect AI when it matters are extension that allow much more robust version history through Google Docs. It feels weird and invasive and like being a spy, but unfortunately right now, this is where we have to be for me to make sure I am not just grading AI-generated work.

you have got to be shitting me. like... a computer... detects that a human sounds too much like a computer and to fix this it (the computer) offers to add human touches to the human's work.

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
