@unofficial-autism-post
to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube
they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!
i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies
Saw these easy to read instructions on Twitter. Stay safe 💚
Great time to start pricing this out by the way, fire season starts… on the summer solstice this year, that’s fun. Signs point to it being a doozy.
Movement nudge, getting up off the floor!
X
real talk, i saw this other vid 7 years ago where a trainer like this lady gave some of the most important physical health advice I ever heard that changed my life:
#1. You should be able to lay down on the floor (face down or back) and be able to get up without your hands. If you can't? Spend a little bit every day just doing that, laying on the floor and getting up again no hands style, then laying down again (you'd be surprised how fast it wears you out after a few times)
#2. You should be able to get up out of a chair without using your hands or grabbing on to anything. Can't? Fucking start training mother fucker! Just a few uppies every day could save your damn life when you get older!
#3. You should be able to turn your neck to the side without twisting your upper body in the same direction, you should be able to turn your head freely without moving your shoulders, chest or torso! Start looking up loosy goosy neck exercises! It makes such a HUGE difference!
#4. You should be able to motherfucking stand on one foot and keep your balance for longer then 15 seconds. Haha sounds easy right? Thats what I thought when I tried after watching that vid, i was horrified to find how hard it was! I started doing "one leggy style" standing any chance I got, when I'm in line somewhere, when I'm watching a video... just do a few rounds of 10 seconds on each leg for like 5 min every day!
Like for real I work out 3 times a week and walk all the damn time, but damn this advice was so eye opening to younger me
You get older and you think you still have all the same limberness as you did when you were 8, but whens the last fucking time you ran around and played like an 8 year old? You loose that flexibility from crawling around and being all wiggles and rolling around on the floor... and then one day when you need it? BAM ITS GONE. Well fuck that, thats not gonna be me when i'm like 60 plus
Start getting into these habits now, i don't care if you're 18/25/30/45/50 OR WHATEVER JUST START YOU WON'T REGRET IT! Don't think "lol I'm young, shut up olds" cos thats what i thought when i saw that vid at first, but if you don't maintain your body in all these small ways yer gonna wake up at 35 unable to turn your damn neck without moving your entire body above the hips

a good thread
pratchett will write an entire book about the grim reaper pretending to be santa claus while the grim reaper’s granddaughter goes about hunting down the dumbass who decided to kill santa, and then right when you think you’re done and the oddly pointed shenanigans are winding down he hits you with “humans need fantasy to be human. to be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape,” and knocks you into next wednesday
#YOU NEED TO BELIEVE IN THINGS THAT ARENT TRUE#HOW ELSE CAN THEY BECOME#god those words are engraved on my heart#gnu terry pratchett
“Why does the third of the three brothers, who shares his food with the old woman in the wood, go on to become king of the country? Why does James Bond manage to disarm the nuclear bomb a few seconds before it goes off rather than, as it were, a few seconds afterwards? Because a universe where that did not happen would be a dark and hostile place. Let there be goblin hordes, let there be terrible environmental threats, let there be giant mutated slugs if you really must, but let there also be hope. It may be a grim, thin hope, an Arthurian sword at sunset, but let us know that we do not live in vain.”

I love the characterization of Lae'zel as a deliberate, reasonable person who through no fault of her own is wrong about almost everything

zoemira night out 💕😳
so I got into grad school today with my shitty 2.8 gpa and the moral of the story is reblog those good luck posts for the love of god
okay so i just got my dream job??? a week after applying to it?? and now i’m thinking….maybe this is the good luck post
…..not even six hours later i got an offer of a well paying full time long-term job with free room and board in queens in nyc, allowing me independence and a way to escape an abusive situation and an unhealthy environment
likes charge reblogs cast, folks, this is the good luck post
i need all the help i can get for finals
Hey so
the last time I reblogged this post right before I got a great job, in a permanent work-from-home position, with benefits, retirement, and a salary literally 3x what I was making before, doing something I really like.
So you know.
This might be the real one, y’all.
I could use some luck
The more a character feels historically grounded, the more people tend to hate them because realistic characters are usually constrained, contradictory, compromised, and shaped by the social systems around them instead of acting like modern power fantasies.
People say they want “realistic medieval women,” but the second a female character actually behaves like someone raised in a brutal patriarchal feudal society valuing marriage, children, family duty, reputation, religion, social survival, they start calling her weak, annoying, regressive, or evil.
A lot of audiences only like “historical” female characters when they secretly think like modern people with modern freedoms and modern feminist language. The second a woman feels too authentically shaped by her world, people get uncomfortable because she stops functioning as easy wish fulfillment.
That’s why characters like Alicent, Catelyn, or Sansa get more hatred than dragonriding fantasy characters. They feel closer to the actual emotional and political realities of aristocratic women in medieval-inspired societies: constrained agency, strategic marriages, motherhood as political survival, soft power instead of brute force, emotional repression, power through diplomacy and social intelligence.
Meanwhile people are more forgiving toward characters wrapped in spectacle (dragons, prophecy, magic, warfare, chosen-one narratives) because fantasy aesthetics soften or distract from the harsher social realities underneath.
Ironically, the grounded characters are doing the heaviest thematic lifting in the story. They’re the ones making the world actually feel historical instead of just becoming dragon CGI and modern politics wearing medieval costumes.
It's amazing - but not the least bit surprising - how female characters who are natural and comfortable in their femininity, are at least somewhat religious, and think and act in a much more realistic way are routinely and viciously shit upon by fans who only want to be spoon fed a power fantasy. A masculine power fantasy, I might add, repackaged and dressed up in a pretty pink bow.
While ordinary, non-magical, vulnerable, often powerless women and girls are treated far too often like the real villains of the story - when they're anything but.
Catelyn being annoying and giving Jon the cold shoulder will never be enough to make her a bigger monster than Tywin. Sansa being painfully naive and bickering with her sister will not make her a bigger monster than Ramsey Bolton. Nor, will Alicent having the audacity to defend her children ever make her as monstrous as Blood and Cheese.
Treating these three characters specifically like they're the most vile, evil, greedy, and disloyal figures to ever grace the pages of ASOIAF and Fire and Blood, is simply outrageous.
This is just Misogyny disguised as criticism of “traditional roles.” Internalized misogynistic ideologies towards characters that are coded as traditionally feminine.
Hey, so this may be a weird place to put this, but if your college or school uses Canvas, it was likely affected by the recent data breach. As of right now, the most likely personal information swept up in this hack is names and email addresses. Login and financial information were not included in the breach (as far as we know).
Right now, as a student you should beware of phishing attempts. Do not click on links seeking your login or financial information. Do not respond to emails about financial aid until verifying the email is legitimate first. Call your school or go speak to an admin in person if you have to. Report any suspicious emails to your school's IT department.
I GOT A FUCKING RAISE THE POTATO WORKED WTF
This potato works. Every. Fucking. Time.

tbh i think the funniest phenomena that's been happening in the last couple years is "youtuber, having gone too deep into the research hole, has been made an investigative journalist against their will"
Shout out to the guy who wanted to do some fun & silly little reviews but uncovered an illegal gambling operation
(Review 2)
this guy started out poking fun at australian politicians and ended up investigating the firebombing of his own home, during which he uncovered connections between the same politician he was making fun of + major organized crime
JasperDasper started out just curious why everything had suddenly become about trans people and questioning some of the sources used in a book. He came out of it, 4 years later, with a 5 hour long video that connects all transphobia to less than 60 people. (I'm not joking. literally every single transphobic rhetoric and bill passed is because of these 50 or so people.)
If you wanna watch it I cannot recommend it enough; I just warn that it covers a LOT.
crazy that in the 1970s they were like, "fine, women can play sports. but because they're innately less athletic than men, only in a special ghettoized League For The Frail And Delicate where they get paid less 😊". And not only is that still the system in 2023, but viciously lashing out at the smallest challenges to that system gets framed as Feminist Praxis
even setting aside the fact that gendered bodytype averages aren't universals, and plenty of individual (cis) women and (cis) men could easily go to toe to toe. have we considered that the fact that all the most prominent and well-paid sports are ones that require things like Being Tall and Having Muscle Mass, as opposed to, ex, gymnastics...is itself an artifact of sexism
Also consider the existence of sports where women would have an advantage, and yet, somehow, the most famous and well paid ones are not women.
I'm thinking of jockeys. Jockeys get an advantage from being smaller and lighter, and while obviously you need sufficient strength to stay on the horse, a well-trained horse does enough of the work that you don't need upper body strength to do the job. Given this and that the majority of children obsessed with horses are female, you'd think most jockeys would be women. Yet somehow they are not.
NASCAR at one point threatened to handicap Danica Patrick by putting extra weight in her car to compensate for the fact that she is smaller and lighter than other racecar drivers. If she gets an advantage as a driver, why is she like practically the only female racecar driver, or at least the only one anyone knows about?
Women, apparently, have an advantage in long distance swimming. Higher body fat percentage and higher endurance means that women can go greater distances in the water. Is long distance swimming even a competitive sport?
Women have actually been excluded from competitive Olympic skiing on the grounds that the jumps required could damage their uterus. The people who actually have unsupported reproductive organs hanging outside their body are considered to have better support than the people whose reproductive organs are nestled in alongside unisex organs like the small intestine and stomach. How does this make any goddamn sense at all? If a uterus could dislodge from the force of a skiing jump, so could intestines and the sport wouldn't be safe for anyone.
Theoretically, any sport where you get an advantage from low center of gravity, better balance, higher flexibility, or being closer to the ground, women should have an advantage. This should include soccer (football in non-US places), and might include hockey if the hockey players hadn't introduced unnecessary viciousness to the sport.
So in any sport where women would excel over men, they're either excluded, unfairly penalized, the sport doesn't exist, or the sport is considered unimportant and no one makes money on it. Hmm. I am thinking the problems here are not actually what the TERFs and transphobes make them out to be.
For those of you wondering "Why did OP say the 70's?" It's because that's when Title IX was passed in the US, prohibiting gender-based discrimination in federally funded education, e.g. public schools & universities. So anti-feminists couldn't just straight up say "no girls allowed" but instead resorted to what's been described above.
It's as if intolerance can't be magically be solved with pieces of paper alone.
Worth mentioning that the Special Olympics and certain Paralympic events are not gender segregated and they both have proven that sports not being segregated makes MORE women join and play, not less. Turns out women are more interested in playing when they're treated with respect as equals. Funny, that.
