Y’know, it’s kind of funny how much death isn’t talked about as a theme in Utena outside of analysis circles considering that the very first thing you learn about Utena Tenjou is that her parents are dead. I could go on about the use of parental death as a background trait in fictional characters, often to add a sense of tragedy and complexity with little effort put in, but Utena in particular plays off of these expectations to lull you into a false sense of security. You begin the show learning that the main protagonist has gone through a traumatic, life-changing event but that’s business as usual for protagonists, right? The fairytale setting adds even more to these assumptions, given how often parental figures die in folktales.
This all culminates in Utena being a typical plucky protagonist, until she isn’t. Until you realize that her parents being dead marks Utena as different from her peers, as uniquely vulnerable to the abuse she suffers through the series, and as someone whose life is permeated with themes of death. Her parents are dead, her prince is dead, 100 boys were killed on this very campus by her own foil, she is trapped within her coffin in the same way everyone else is but she has also literally laid in a coffin to die before. It’s not as overt as other themes, but it’s everpresent as a spectre haunting Utena’s narrative. It’s her life’s background radiation.
yk considering the princess/the dragon fairytale motif that exists in culture, the fact visionary is specifically the western dragon and that Audrey specifically freezes a version of herself that is not just innocent, but not yet a dragon (when her reason to continue developing as a beyonder became to protect her family). (And the little Audrey is specifically a version that her family considers something they should protect and it is their expectation of her as such that technically constrains her, to them she is their princess and it is her tower I guess) Yeah, I guess you can say a version of her that is the virtual persona is an image of a princess that she guards as a dragon (so she has to hide her true self)
(Sorry it it us not very coherent) (i mean in western culture tge dragon is usually thought as more masculine altho there were examples of dragons that were implicitly she)
this is likely what cf intended irt the relationship between audrey’s vp and her true self, yeah! audrey is cf’s take on the naive youngest noble daughter in most fantasy works, who either usually serve to uplift the protagonist’s sense of justice (lol) as a sidekick/love interest/ensemble cast member or to be constantly endangered to highlight the darkness of their world. the damsel in distress, basically.
and you can see how audrey as a character functions in the same way, but with the usual twist of being able to stand up and fight for herself (with the caveat of ‘fighting with a woman’s weapon of emotions and relationships’.) her relationship with her vp is easily the best part of her character, since it shows that she’s aware that this version of her is what’s most desired by others. a pure, noble daughter who knows nothing about the darkness of the world, who can just sit there and shine prettily like a gem on a rack of jewelry.
but that’s the issue, right? the dragon and the princess being the same person is a fun take and all, but the fact that the princess still has to exist at all is bad. the princess- audrey’s vp- being created signifies a refusal of change. like we said before, audrey and adam both arrive at the same conclusion irt childhood innocence & purity: it must continue to be preserved within and/or through them, for the betterment of the world and the people around them. audrey doesn’t trust her family to accept her deep involvement in Beyonder world, and expects them to put themselves at risk trying to help/protect her. instead of attempting to come to a compromise or talk to them about her feelings on the matter, she gives them a doll of herself for them to do so. by creating the princess, the dragon creates the tower, thereby trapping the princess to begin with.
free use? *smirks snartly* so naive. you know nothing in this damned society is really free...
can't look up what snartly means because i don't have a dictionary account
To be quite honest with you all I do think that aro/ace-spectrum fans in fandoms where people are desperately inventing crossover ships and humanizing non-human characters in order to have a conventionally attractive guy to ship the main character with, instead of possibly having to enjoy a story with no romance in it, have the right to refer to everyone else as cowards.
Sorry you almost had to entertain the idea that people like me exist, I'm sure that was very painful for you.
This post has officially reached the "Let people enjoy things" crowd so I'm just going to come right and say it: Do I or do I not also count as a people.

thinking about yqy and sj and og sqh. i'm not advocating that they all get along but can you imagine what it must have been like talking to yqy when these two are also right next to him. gee yqy how come you get two evil advisors. most kings only got one vizier going "my lord shall i suggest we kill him".
no wonder og sqh betrayed him. it's a normal occupational hazard. that's just what happens when you have two evil advisors.
the big man is the masculine dom and the dom is the top and the little man is effeminate and transgender but fully passes as a cis man and has top surgery but since he doesnt have bottom surgery he literally has to be a bottom theres no way for someone with a vagina to top and the bottom is the sub and they are both uncomplicatedly homosexual with zero positive emotions for women and they both have adhd and autism but only the kind of autism that doesnt actually disable you and they also crossdress but in a specifically humiliating way (why would a MAN wear a DRESS??? 🤪🤪 etc.) and they live together in a big house that they can both effortlessly afford and they're married and have 2 kids a dog and a cat (because Big man is dog coded and Little man is cat coded) and neither of them have jobs or lasting damage from canon events they've been through or physical disabilities or PTSD that I cant turn into Angsty Ship Content and the sun has a big smiley face and birds are just V shapes on the paper it doesnt have to be more complicated than that you dont have to flesh them out. you dont have to. and if you think about it wouldn't it just be soooo much effort to draw a whole bird?? youre just having fun its mean to ask you for detail. and my teacher lives at the school and the bus driver lives in the bus and everything is exactly the same :)
I am genuinely obsessed with how jiang cheng goes from "youngest sect leader in an age with a weak, newly rebuilt sect who can't risk upsetting the jin sect" to "if you're going to offend someone, make sure you don't offend the jiang sect or sandu shengshou"
#there are three things jiang cheng is unambiguously better at than wei wuxian#mean comments that will echo around in his targets heads when they’re trying to sleep#fashion#and leading a small group of people back from the brink of a genocide to a position of prosperity and stability (@winepresswrath)
I really love ancient history and evolutionary biology, and KH taking place in a reality that’s literally shattered is so interesting and I’d love to see it explored more. Like it’s nothing you’d notice growing up in a tiny microcosm, that’s how it’s always been, but once you’ve been on the outside, you start to see the cracks. Like how does Sora know what snow is before going to Mulan’s world, or have a concept of Christmas but not Christianity? Why does Wakka have an accent, or Yuffie have her proud ninja heritage, if humans had always existed these tiny, single biomed worlds, completely separate from each other? It’s because they didn’t, and leftovers from that original, unified world are still alive in the people of the KH verse.
(It’s also a fictional universe where the laws of evolution don’t apply. Shit exists like that because Nomura said so, and because the ff characters actually did originate in stories with normal planets and diverse environments. But it’s fun to think about!)
Imagine scientists in Radiant garden trying to figure out the origins of human life and culture, but they can’t. It’s like it just appeared. Imagine things like music and fashion trends just sort of leaking through somehow, as even ripped apart, the pieces of the universe still try to pull themselves back together. Your favorite song is just there one day, no artist in existence to have created it because they live in another reality. The worlds with humans are more similar than they are different, which wouldn’t be the case had they developed separately.
Obviously I don’t expect a deep dive on the weirdness of living in a broken universe, but it would be fun if the characters ever pointed it out.

hilarious how grace is wandering around that aircraft carrier thinking i'm just a guy. meanwhile his security clearance is technically on the same level as the actual eva stratt herself
#phm#in the book he's like#'my office is technically a storage closet. they're gonna kick me out of here when we resupply. i'm about as important as toilet paper.'#man you live on a boat. how many other people on the boat have an office at all.#you're the guy who looks at the paperwork and signs shit that's not worth bothering stratt over#which you can choose to interpret as either not very important or VERY IMPORTANT INDEED.#you're the guy who says 'yeah i think this plan is scientifically feasible'#to which stratt says 'okay my pet scientist says it'll work‚ let's go ahead and pave the sahara.'
I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal sense— it is behavior that causes social harm.
I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.
i used to think that agent grapes' clark kent glasses were useless since pretty much every person who saw him could immediately tell that hes kim soleum. but now after reading ch 299 im beginning to think it might have been a useful disguise after all, just not against humans. imagine if he went into a disaster looking like himself and just as hes confronting the big scary monster to rescue the citizen its about to kill, the monster stares at him wide-eyed and goes, "hooooooly heck are you Braun's Friend? from Braun's Late Night Talk Show?" and drops the citizen its holding to take out a Dark Smartphone and ask for a Dark Selfie, meanwhile soleum can feel agent bronze and agent choi staring at him and hes sweating bullets trying to think of how to explain that hes sort of friendly exes with a ghost celebrity who let him appear on his tv show thats famous among ghosts
the REALLY funny thing about this imo is that we learn Fujimines magic doesn't mind control people but rather just makes them treat her like a precious and important person that they care about
so it's not that Kumugi is being mind controlled into smashing Dess over the head with a rock, that's just her first thought in this situation as to what she'd do if someone she loves is in danger
game dev: we make deep, meaningful, games with real messages. we don’t want our games to be just mindless and feel good - we make games to say something about the world we live in
community: hey this bit seems to be kind of weirdly racist
game dev: actually we aren’t saying anything and our games are just for fun and there is absolutely no correlation between this and anything in the real world
