That's not "absurd desire", that's "the only way to the top road is fucking stairs and i have a pram or heavily laden nanna trolley". The path goes up the first part of the hill, then along the fairly flat part until it reaches the gap in the hedge, which also makes sense. When you're pushing or pulling something heavy with wheels, you want to go along the flat part for as long as possible.
It's very logical to my eye, which is why it's been used often enough and for long enough to develop into a desire path.

Just got a new Roomba.
The last one (acquired sometime in 2012) finally died, so it was time for a replacement. The new model 105 is the cheapest one they make but by golly it's an upgrade in every conceivable way.
However.
The startup/unpacking procedure has changed. Where, before, you just charged the thing for 8 hours then turned it on... now you gotta configure it:
download the app
create an account & login
connect Roomba to the app/internet
use the app to configure Roomba
use the app to designate "forbidden" areas
use the app to schedule Roomba's start/stop times
Etcetera. Upon unboxing it I was >this< close to returning it, because nowhere was it stated on the web store that the app was REQUIRED to utilize the small floor cleaning robot.
But then I had an idea.
I set New Roomba down and pressed the Power button, without installing any apps or connecting it to wifi. And you know what?
IT STARTED CLEANING
It bumbled around the house mapping everything itself and did a marvelous job, without my having to do any of the recommended crap in the Quick Startup instructions. And without configuring its wifi there's no way it's sending data to iRobot's servers. Yayy.
In 2025 some things do just work right out of the box.
Can confirm my wireless enabled air filter does not require any Internet connection to work exactly like its non wireless predecessor. I tried connecting it once and it did not work as well as it did when I disabled the wireless connection. It was flashing a small "can't connect" light so I put tape over that light and it still all works fine.
My stove, dishwasher, and washing machine all have apps. "Install the app!" the manuals all say. "Get access to fancy cycles and features!" they all say.
I have installed exactly none of these apps, and have connected exactly zero of these appliances to the wifi.
They all work fine.
Like seriously 99% of my dishwasher cycles are "auto" and the remaining 1% are "express", neither of which I need an app for. Allegedly the app can tell me when the dishwasher needs more rinse aid but so does the little red light on the display. Which is handier than the app because the rinse aid lives in the cabinet next to the dishwasher and so when I see the little light I fill the rinse aid and am done, instead of an alert on my phone stressing me out everywhere and impinging on my brain.
The washer? 95% of what I was is cold water on the colors cycle. The rest is towels in hot water or delicates in cold water. Sometimes I get fancy and delay the towels an hour so it's not competing with the dishwasher or the shower for hot water. None of that needs the app. Allegedly the app can tell me when the washer is done but so can a timer I set to the wash time handily displayed when I start the washer, and that doesn't send any data to the manufacturer.
Honestly I don't even know what the stove app does because I can do fancy things like "turn the oven on in 3 hours" without it.
Yes, it is incredibly shitty that these all have apps now and that some features are app-only and that we are all pushed to give up more and more of our control and privacy in order to feed the gaping maw of corporate "profit". HOWEVER. Sometimes you can still just not.
And if you HAVE installed the app and connected the thing to the wifi, you can change your mind in most cases. Change your wifi password and uninstall the app. Sometimes for big appliances you can find instructions on how to physically remove the wifi module. If it literally won't turn on without a wifi connection, you can almost always make a separate network for it on your router that you then block from internet access.

I'm writing Strange Aeons/ClassicallyAbby GothamAU Fanfiction where Tumblr has become the most profitable website on Earth after the success of Dashcon. You and your children have the occasional cameo and I wanted to check in beforehand to make sure I portray you accurately and in a way you would be comfortable with.
You're a raccoon-themed minor supervillain in Gotham City. Years of intense training have taught you to understand raccoon language, so you have the power to convince them to do crime for you. You may or may not have gained the power of mind reading on your search for a non-lethal way to check people's brains for rabies, I haven't decided yet. Your main motivation for crime is needing money for more raccoon research, and whenever I'm not sure how to write you, I'll have you spout cool raccoon or bug facts (or generally write you as an autistic self-insert of myself if I'm lost). Lammy and Moonshine get cool headbands to hide their identities when they break into cybertrucks or RNC conventions. Lammy is the cautious one while Moonshine has no fear of God. You teach Strange a thing or two about robbing rich people and generally have a bit of a mentor/Tumblr Gandalf role in the story, I think.
All that said, is there anything in the pitch you want me to cut? Any tips on how to portray you more accurately?
Everything sounds really good! My supervillain name is Roadkill, btw. Im really good at driving in big cities with scary traffic and on windy mountain roads. I’m also a biter. I prefer that over weapons.
Also, you can choose whether or not to add this, but I was canonically roommates with the Joker for like two years. This is a real world fact. He used to write “need ramen” on my mirror in red lipstick and would bring me home various doodads he stole.
Also, Lammy is not super great at puzzles (unlike moonshine) but she does this thing where she makes pathetic baby raccoon noises, despite being a full grown adult. So that’s a fun way to trick people.
I see a lot of posts around this time of year that talk about getting a mobility aid if you need one and that you aren't "not disabled enough" to get one if it'll help, which is true! But I don't see a lot about making sure you get the right mobility aid. You do need to do some research to make sure it's the correct one for your needs, because using the wrong one long term will hurt you. If you can see a specialist about it that's even better, but that's not accessible to everyone.
One thing I see a lot is people suggesting canes as a catch-all mobility aid for everyone who has mobility issues. Canes are not for weight bearing! If you use a cane for heavy weight bearing long term, you will hurt your wrists and back! Canes are for balance. There are also different types of canes, but someone else can probably explain those better than I can.
A crutch/pair of crutches is better for bearing weight, particularly forearm/support crutches if you're going to be using them a lot and don't want to strain your wrists, or platform crutches if you don't have a lot of arm strength.
Walkers/rollators are good for if you do have arm and hand strength and need a place to sit down or need to carry a lot with you, but very very bad if you can't weight bear well with your arms or pull the brakes easily. You will often need to be able to use your foot to maneuver it over a slight lip, too. If you can't do all of those things you will hurt yourself.
Wheelchairs are a whole lot more complicated and I don't feel qualified to speak on that (I've only ever used improperly fitted chairs, and have suffered permanent damage because of it).
Mobility scooters are great for going outside alone if you don't have the arm strength for a manual chair, as they can handle terrain that an motorised wheelchair often can't, but are harder to maneuver in small spaces (especially bulky class 3 scooters, which aren't designed for indoor use at all) and usually aren't suitable for full time use. If you need more support they most likely won't be suitable either, the seats are usually not designed with support for people who cannot hold themselves upright and generally do not have a seatbelt by default. I'm working on a proper guide for this and will hopefully post it soon!
There's also deconditioning to keep in mind, which is very important to think about if you aren't doing physiotherapy. You also need to consider things like pressure sores, which you will be especially prone to in seated mobility aids if you aren't able to reposition yourself regularly or have loss of sensation in or awareness of any part of your body.
Do your research! Don't just default to a cane!
