last summer my friend who is an amazingly talented artist and i were in this super tall building, and she’s in a wheelchair and i’m pushing her around the room. it’s an art exhibit and some of her art was chosen to be showcased there and so it’s all fine and dandy until suddenly an alarm starts going off

a FIRE ALARM

everyone starts running for the stairs and my friend just looks at me with this forlorn look on her face

“i can’t go down the stairs”

but i’m a stubborn bitch “i’ll carry you”

“what about my chair? it’s too expensive for me to be able to get another one if i can’t get this one back”

“i’ll carry that too”

and i did. we went to the stairs (by then most people from our floor were gone) and i lifted her up in a fireman’s carry over my shoulder and then lifted her chair up and used the ridiculous amount of adrenaline that was coursing through my veins to make it down approximately 20 half-flights of stairs until we met some people exiting lower floors, one of which who kindly took the chair. I changed positions so i was holding my friend bridal-style which was, somehow, easier and the person who took her wheelchair (with her permission to handle it of course) accompanied me to the ground floor and then out the doors

basically there is no real protocol for people who can’t use the stairs in an emergency. it’s up to the people with them, if anyone, to help them or the person to somehow make it down the stairs alone, unassisted

thank fuck that it was just a faulty alarm system, because if i was unable to carry her down those stairs and the building was on fucking fire???? then i don’t know what would have happened to her, but i don’t think it would have been very good.

the fire marshal hemmed and hawed for a while and then said to take the elevator- you’re supposed to leave it free for the fire department to use and they want able-bodied people out fast not waiting for elevators. if the fire alarm has just gone off the building probably hasn’t suffered enough structural damage to make using the elevator dangerous, and modern elevator wells are heavily reinforced. many large and high-trafficked buildings on my campus have fire rated elevators that link in with the fire alarm system so they won’t let you off on a floor with a possible fire. 

if the elevator isn’t working, wait in the stairwell and call the fire department to let them know where you are. modern stairwells are also heavily reinforced- it might not be pleasant but modern building code usually requires fire-resistant stairwell doors in office and big residential buildings, also to help firefighters get in and out safely. older buildings’ stairwells may or may not be retrofitted with fire-resistant doors but a stairwell is generally the safest place to wait if you can’t get out. 

Understand that once you enter the elevator, you could POTENTIALLY be taking your life into your hands there.

It is NOT LIKELY, to be perfectly honest. It’s only in a pretty catastrophic scenario - think the Twin Towers, USA, on September 11th - that the elevators will be compromised and out of service. But there is a NOT ZERO PERCENT CHANCE and you need to understand that and accept it.

As for leaving the elevators free for the firefighters, okay, here’s the deal. Unless your nearest fire station is literally right next door? Your first on scene fire truck is NOT likely to be there on scene and needing that elevator before you get to the ground. It takes us TIME to find the address, gear up, and drive to the building. Then we need to hoof it into where the elevators even ARE, so YOU HAVE TIME to use the elevator to get down to the ground floor... BUT ONLY IF THERE’S NOT A RUSH ON THE ELEVATOR! And THAT is WHY we don’t tell people this shit. That’s WHY we tell people to NEVER USE THE ELEVATOR... because every self-entitled asshole will use it because they don’t feel like walking, and then put YOU in danger by delaying the elevator’s arrival to you.

IF, however, the elevator IS compromised, or you just can’t get it to come for you, or whatever, and you either don’t have anyone with you who has the adrenaline fueled BALLS to be able to toss you over their shoulder and hoof it down the stairs with you - because, let’s face it, that is RARE AS FUCK, then HERE IS WHAT YOU DO:

You call 911 and tell the call taker that you are in the building that has a fire alarm going off, and you are not able to evacuate because of a physical disability, and you tell them what floor you are on, and EXACTLY what stairwell you are waiting at. And the very FIRST thing that the firefighters are going to do once they arrive, if it is, indeed, a REAL emergency, and not a false alarm, is come get your ass and bring you down. Whether that means carrying you down the stairs, or whether that means locking out the elevators so that no one else can override them and coming to get you themselves, they WILL come get you FIRST THING if it is a real event. And if it is a false alarm? You will probably be the first person who is not involved with the building to know, because the call-taker is going to stay on the line with you until you are under someone’s care and out of danger, or until the scene has been sorted out as real or false, and you are out of danger that way.

These are pretty standard operations in the fire service throughout the United States. There may be some minor variations based on specific municipalities, but, for the most part, this is pretty typical: LIFE BEFORE PROPERTY. So, as long as SOMEONE knows where you are - hence why you call 911 - Firefighters will come get you. You are NOT alone, and you have NOT been abandoned. I PROMISE. It’s like, our whole reason for doing the shit we do: to save lives and to break shit. Sometimes, we get lucky enough to do both at the same time.

High rise fires suck ass, and I always hated them. But the very FIRST thing I asked anytime we got one was if we had “any entrapments” - which is what we call anyone who could not self-evacuate for ANY reason. We ain’t leaving you behind. And yes, your friend who doesn’t have the stamina to carry you down can stay with you, too. Because I would never ask that of someone, honestly. 

If disabled and the fire alarm is just happened, you're allowed to take the elevators down but there's a small possibility you could get stuck if the elevators are compromised.

If you can't use the elevators or don't want that risk, go to the stairwell which is reinforced against fire, close the doors, and call 911 to let them know you are in that particular stairwell and can't get down.

Fire will strongly prioritize finding and rescuing people who might be still in the building during any actual structure fire. This is a major component of their job.

A Breach of Trust by Phantomrose96 – Gen. One of the first I've read for MP100. I read it for two weeks back in 2023 and unfortunately stopped around chapter 38, because... it was too exciting! You see, I had stomach issues at that time, and sensations like anxiety made me very sick. This is a pretty weird way to say this story is amazing, but it's the truth... I still find it wonderfully written, it makes you feel awful in a good way. Really scratched my itch for messed up situations. If you want to read tons of those, I recommend it!

the twelfth annual rising sun spiritual union holiday decoration contest by toyotas – Contains Serizawa/Reigen. I loved the writing in that one. It's very fun in the particular MP100 flavor all of you like, and reads both as a funny romcom and a spin-off of the spin-off

A Picture's Worth by teruthecreator – Contains Teru/Mob and minor pairings. A very enjoyable story telling about Teru's life, how he changes as a person and interacts with all the new connections he makes in the way. Lovely all around. I also like the questions of gender the author brings up around the final chapters

A House Made of Cards by Phantomrose96 – Gen. A short piece of fic loaded with suspense and a very shocking ending! I can't say much, I shall not spoil the fun... : )

Fault and Fracture by crookedturtle, fend – Contains minor pairings. This one is so exciting!! A nervewracking tale following a very worried, very determined Reigen trying to find Mob after he is taken by the government post-Confession Arc. Full of action and mystery, it features most of the cast and also has beautiful drawings!

Butterfly Effect by Frecklefrog – Gen. What if Teru and Mob met as children and everything changed? If you like these kind of situations, reading about adorable children with horrid trauma and Reigen being a responsible guy, you'll sure enjoy it

the big empty by sprinkles – Contains Teru/Mob. This is the one who got me, a lady who doesn't really care about romance, big into a ship for the first time in my life! Beautifully intimate, it describes the evolution of their relationship with much sensibility and care. The ending makes me cry in a good way...

Backdraft by r0semint – Contains minor pairings. Teruki Hanazawa is in a more fragile situation than he imagines, being a teenager living by himself. When his parents don't send him money this month, how he'll deal with the sudden risks and the following doubts about their relationship? Heartbreaking, but also heartwarming

in absentia* by MalkyTop – Contains Serizawa/Reigen. SO, SO CREATIVE!!!! I love how the author deals with the vagueness of human consciousness and the absolute mindfuck that involves spirits and body sharing. The use of asterisks is amazing. One of the most unique bodyswaps I've seen!

Old Habits Die Hard by Primaryblue – Contains Teru/Mob. Teruki moves out of Seasoning City and loses contact with his friends. Ten years later, he is there again with a frustrating job and a empty life, only for him to meet Mob again...?! Beautiful and enchanting, the characters have notably chsnged, but are still the people we love and know

The Negligible Self by ch_am – Contains Serizawa/Reigen. Hanahaki disease, but with a supernatural sickfic twist. Serizawa and Reigen investigate a mysterious spirit as a superbloom takes the city and Reigen's lungs. A lovely depiction of devotion and care

Of Kings and Men by Jadespade – Contains Serizawa/Reigen. Fun medieval fantasy AU for all your knight/king relationship needs! I love how the events of canon are adapted here

Issho by ToastyToaster22 – Gen. Teru and Mob become childhood friends, but as Claw takes notice of these little espers, their lives are changed forever for both better and worse. I love how child Teru is characterized here, what a weird little guy. You'll fall in love with Reigen and Teru's developing father and son relationship while also crying because this kid suffered so much. Amazing, truly amazing!

For a Few Dollars More by Imalittlestitious – Contains Serizawa/Reigen. Is "gay cowboys" a pleonasm? Well, here it sure is. A fun story in which MP100 takes place in the Wild West and Reigen makes do as the "Fastest Gunslinger" of this place

Houseghost by silverspoongoon – Gen. Dimple finds out that being by himself in the Kageyamas' house is terribly boring, and he isn't the kind of spirit to just stay still all the day. How bad would it be if he fixed some things? Funny and creative, this is a great exploration of our favorite ghost

wake by amaranthinecanicular – Contains Teru/Mob and minor pairings. An interpretation of the Ageswap AU in which Mob grows up depressed and dependent on meds to keep his feelings in check. As he meets this strange kid named Reigen, his life changes forever. Oh this one brings up large feelings!

Cracks in Concrete by spitecentral – Gen. Mezato will never be the same as the Divine Tree flies away. How will she deal with the confusing emotions involved in this? An incredible interpretation of her character!

That Day In November by Grocerystorephobic – Gen. Mezato remembers the events of the Divine Tree Arc, but no one else does. She decides to discover the truth behind this. A wonderful view about her and a much needed development arc for my girl!!

deserving by orphan_account – Contains Teru/Mob. Teru still feels guilty over the day he met Shigeo. Mob helps him understand what to leave on the past. Truth be told, I love when Teru's emotions make him messy and autodestructive and he has to learn that people love him anyways

He Just Likes Dogs by asphyxeno – Gen. Reigen helps a client with a depressed old dog and ends up getting attached to it. Sad. SO VERY SAD. I cry when bad things happen to pets, and even more with this ending

Mrs. Kageyama Reaches ???% by brown_little_robin – Gen. What if both Shigeo and his mother had a tendency to "separate" different parts of themselves? Amazing Kageyama parents characterization, it deals a lot with the conflict between Japan's "hands off" parenting style and being extremely worried for your children, even more knowing you don't have the tools to help

The Brassica Heresy by scribefindegil – Gen. Seasoning City falls under the control of Lord Psycho Helmet, but Tsubomi is still not convinced. She struggles against paranoia, social pressure and food insecurity as she avoids being brainwashed and tries to find Mob. EXTREMELY GOOD. A thrilling exploration of misogyny and the horrors of the Divine Tree, with an aromantic flavor to match

sunflower fish by venusiancarbondioxide – Gen. Tsubomi nearly dies in an accident and wakes up with no memories. She discovers that she loathes the person she had pretended to be. Such an INTERESTING vision of her with an intriguing prose

Overview of some topics when it comes to drawing characters who are burn survivors.

DISCLAIMER. Please keep in mind that this is an introductory overview for drawing some burn scars and has a lot of generalizations in it, so not every “X is Z” statement will be true for Actual People. I'm calling this introductory because I hope to get people to actually do their own research before drawing disabled & visibly different characters rather than just making stuff up. Think of it as a starting point and take it with a grain of salt (especially if you have a very different art style from mine).

Talking about research and learning... don't make your burn survivor characters evil. Burn survivors are normal people and don't deserve to be constantly portrayed in such a way.
