#evil lair llc - shit i do to my apartment/various non-textile hacky nonsense

#phil short for philip marlowe, my little tabby cat. not a thought in her beautiful empty head.
#maps charts and graphs/ #and lists and flags - bureaucratic & simplified representations of information

very frightening to watch myself fall victim to nostalgia. every time i find a piece of music that really scratches my brain there’s an 80% chance it was made during the first obama administration, during my most malleable late high school and early college years.

Did an experienced alpinist leave his girlfriend to die at the top of a mountain? William Finnegan for the New Yorker
they do not make guys like this author any more, guys who have written for one specific magazine since 1987.
one of the minor but just as heartbreaking asides in this story is how the girlfriend’s family would rather keep an idealized version of their dead daughter than see her killer brought to justice. like yes! this was a complicated case! but it was not a suicide or an accident!
The Gurtners were called to testify in court. Jelinek, Plamberger’s attorney, suggested that their refusal to blame Thomas showed “true human greatness.” It also aligned, of course, with his defense. Many observers were shocked by the Gurtners’ support for Thomas, but it didn’t seem strange to me. Whatever the facts of the case, the parents would prefer to believe that their daughter had died pursuing an ambitious dream, and that her boyfriend had loved her.

A USA Today bestseller!Set in a world of goblin wars, stag-sized battle ravens, and assassins who kill with deadly tattoos, Christopher Bueh
Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics. His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path.
But today, Kinch Na Shannack has picked the wrong mark.
Galva is a knight, a survivor of the brutal goblin wars, and handmaiden of the goddess of death. She is searching for her queen, missing since a distant northern city fell to giants.
Unsuccessful in his robbery and lucky to escape with his life, Kinch now finds his fate entangled with Galva's. Common enemies and uncommon dangers force thief and knight on an epic journey where goblins hunger for human flesh, krakens hunt in dark waters, and honor is a luxury few can afford.
great premise! yet another book i had on hold for months that i returned within minutes. a combination of things:
a deeply dnd brained way of writing an action scene. terrific game to play for some people. very ill suited for telling a story or getting across an action scene in an engaging manner. i never ever want to read an author describing how a fast action (the DnD™️ move) might work in real life
many things, places, and peoples in this book are a few letters off from real life Western Europe. make your own stuff. stop making me try to place everything on a mental map of our world as soon as you mention it.
extremely complex frontloaded worldbuilding. i refuse to believe that five seasons and fifteen months and ten day weeks and specific day names for each day of each month are going to be plot relevant. for what purpose do i need to know this in the first two chapters???

very frightening to watch myself fall victim to nostalgia. every time i find a piece of music that really scratches my brain there’s an 80% chance it was made during the first obama administration, during my most malleable late high school and early college years.

Common enemies and uncommon dangers force thief and knight on an epic journey where goblins hunger for human flesh, krakens hunt in dark waters, and honor is a luxury few can afford.
great premise! yet another book i had on hold for months that i returned within minutes. a combination of things:
a deeply dnd brained way of writing an action scene. terrific game to play for some people. very ill suited for telling a story or getting across an action scene in an engaging manner. i never ever want to read an author describing how a fast action (the DnD™️ move) might work in real life
many things, places, and peoples in this book are a few letters off from real life Western Europe. make your own stuff. stop making me try to place everything on a mental map of our world as soon as you mention it.
extremely complex frontloaded worldbuilding. i refuse to believe that five seasons and fifteen months and ten day weeks and specific day names for each day of each month are going to be plot relevant. for what purpose do i need to know this in the first two chapters???

here is some “art pop” that i could uncharitably describe it as “edgy stomp clap”. however as soon as you listen to it you will be like ah! this IS some kay bullshit.
very frightening to watch myself fall victim to nostalgia. every time i find a piece of music that really scratches my brain there’s an 80% chance it was made during the first obama administration, during my most malleable late high school and early college years.
how’d i find this? went to check if one of my favorite bands (Findlay) put out any new music (no) and futzed around with the “we think you might like this!” thing at the bottom.

they do not make guys like this author any more, guys who have written for one specific magazine since 1987.
one of the minor but just as heartbreaking asides in this story is how the girlfriend’s family would rather keep an idealized version of their dead daughter than see her killer brought to justice. like yes! this was a complicated case! but it was not a suicide or an accident!

(EDIT: ACCIDENTALLY POSTED IT RIGHT BACK TO DRAFTS LAST NIGHT)
Listening: I don't know how I came across Patchwork by Suzi which is a really great sad indie girl album and also unbearably Australian, which, well, look at the title of the headline track:
Reading: Went on an extended kick reading the EU Agricultural Statistics page
description
I was mainly interested in the labour section of this which I have been assuming is like 40-50% lies because of underreporting of migrant labour but you know. It's a proxy.
Watching: I somehow came across Alton Brown's new YouTube series so I watched a bunch of that. I never actually watched Alton Brown when he was on TV so this is my first brush with him. A lot of this isn't super useful to me on account of being like. Here's how you make an entire steak. But the baking is interesting and I do in fact plan on making a Croque Monsieur in the near future. I like getting some ideas. It's also vindicating when someone else does the weird thing you do, e.g. steaming eggs
Playing: not much, I spent most of my computer time on the Linux Tablet project and CAD.
Making: Continuing prototyping some ESPHome lighting and fan projects trying to decide whether I want to sacrifice a USB cable to this or if I'll just make them barrel jack powered. USB is nice because you can just take it anywhere and even make it battery powered very easily but the advantage of barrel jacks is that it like fully doubles the cost of the power supply between a 12V capable USB charger and the USB trigger board vs my endless pile of 12V switching supplies.
Also, still trying to port PostmarketOS for SM8650 Legion Tab, running into bewildering build issues that remind me of working at the Linux factory.
Tools and Equipment: If like me you're sometimes like "well how much fat and protein is there actually in a peanut" you probably end up on a bunch of random health sites that don't give you nice per 100g numbers and also want to sell you on Horsemaxxing or whatever. The USDA food database is extremely comprehensive and relatively no nonsense.
The USDA FoodData Central search function provides nutrient data for food components based on individually researched samples.
