I mean the french very much aren't getting away with it. Everyone else is taking their language and running off with it cackling with glee. We're all getting away with fucking up french words on purpose
#English loves french so much it steals the same fucking word a few centuries apart so it gets two words that have the same meaning#But different spellings -#Like guarantee/warranty#(aside: There was a w/g shift so you can see if the word showed up with the normans or got nicked later#Which is why for e.g. the english call it wales and the french call it pays de galls)#Catch/chase#Gender/genre
I'm so glad someone reblogged these additions while I was away from my puter, I absolutely love doublets (or twinlings as they are apparently called as well!! That's so cute!!)!
i struggle to think of modern au mercelot scenarios because imo their relationship is so contextual and relies on the fantasy elements of the canon setting. i could see lancelot wanting to become... law enforcement (ew) because of his childhood tragedy, since there are a lot of stories like that already. either that or a soldier/join the army. the latter is more likely i think. but what about merlin??? so much of their friendship is about bravery on the face of the different challenges the world throws at them, the magic that merlin has and lancelot guards and adores. i could see merlin as a doctor of some kind, but WHAT would be his secret??? (that he's queer)
aaaah idk idk. thoughts????? would love to hear about other people's visions
I've thought about it and I have an idea... ๐ค Consider underground fighter Lancelot. Think about Lancelot from season 2. He had nothing and no one and fought for money.
I think it sounds delicious.
(the whole story outline under the cut)
Lancelot might have had a dream of being something else (those sweet ideas like a doctor, or a law enforcer (ew), or something). But Lancelot is a poor orphan and doesn't have money for that education or enough smarts for a scholarship (maybe he had tried for it and didn't pass and the uni told him to try next year). And he might have been disillusioned about the dream (especially if it's a law enforcer? Uther might be connected with it).
And then someone got him into illegal fighting for money, and Lancelot is very good at fighting.
Let's call the fighting place "The Lair".
I can see Lancelot using that money to help in the orphanage, or at the food banks, etc. Maybe he actually needs money for some other orphan kid's hospital bills. Maybe he self-studies at a public library. And/or saves up money for his education.
After Lancelot got a little used to the fighting gig, a new face appears there โ Merlin. Merlin takes care of everyone's wounds and he's much better than the previous hack they had.
Merlin cleans and stitches up his wounds with careful hands and a gentle smile, and no one has ever treated Lancelot this kind. Lancelot soaks up his care and gets into more fights (for more money and/or to meet Merlin) and sometimes they talk.
And then one time they meet outside the Lair, at a public library. Lancelot is flabbergasted and Merlin casually strides up to him and comments on his reading and gives a few pointers if it's about medicine. Then one of them suggest they go for a coffee and they have a good time (it's a date).
Now, what's the deal with Merlin? (aside from him being queer)
Merlin has a pretty good friend (on a good day) โ Arthur. Arthur's father - Uther - is a head of the police/mayor. Uther and his people are jerks but Merlin worked his magic on Arthur and Arthur isn't much of a jerk anymore. Arthur wants to succeed his father and to turn the system for the better.
However, Merlin is not going to wait forever for that change. Merlin has a vigilante group running, solving crimes, helping the victims and getting them legal assistance, fucking up the elites. Kilgharrah is their grumpy informant (they're chatting over text and never saw each other), Gaius might be a lawyer (sorry for not making him a doctor. he paid for Merlin's doctor education though). But the main workers are Merlin and Morgana (and sometimes Gwen helps?).
Arthur didn't know about it (Merlin had to do a lot of shady things for his group? and it was risky telling Arthur?). But with Uther's death a few months ago, Merlin was just going to tell Arthur over some dinner, but Arthur never came.
After Uther's death, Agravaine got appointed as the new head. Agravaine is corrupt, and his corrupt friends got him the place at the top, and Agravaine will close his eyes on some of the city regions, or some business, or some people disappearances, especially if it's the Lair and if it's Arthur's disappearance.
Merlin went undercover to the Lair. It was on their radar for a while, but Arthur's disappearance and some vague shady traces leading to the Lair's involvement got him running head first into the danger. The shady shit is well hidden however, and it takes some time to investigate it.
There he meets Lancelot and is surprised how such a seemingly nice person got there.
Merlin investigates Lancelot and one time even stalks him to the library (what if Lancelot has a shady meeting there, huh?). Lancelot noticed him, and Merlin had to approach him and have a talk (it was very nice).
Lancelot later catches Merlin at his shady activities (sneaking around or hacking or killing someone with a gun...) and keeps quiet about it and then helps Merlin, putting his own position and life at risk. Some action and bloody filled plot unravels at the Lair...
I'm just imagining Lancelot for the whole of it with some scrapes and bruises and bandages
ohhhh this is such a cool concept!!! i think you could complicate lancelot's situation by making him an immigrant (technically true to canon) and that uther's politics (depending on what's his role is here, he's either a politician or a police chief or something, and maybe his war is against emigration [can you tell current politics affect me haha] which fits pretty well with the themes of discrimination) and for reasons (the Economy, not having papers maybe???) lancelot's not been able to put himself into a school he can pay. that's when the underground fighting starts, maybe he's feeling lost and disillusioned and one day he stumbles upon a gang beating up someone for not paying a loan and he steps in to help, and that's when the gang beats him up but not before he causes some real damage, which leaves everyone in awe. then hengist, the leader, is like "do you want to win some money" (insert sleazy smile). in exchange for a percentage of his winnings he'll "sponsor" lancelot in the underground fight club. maybe hengist gets him a shitty apartment to live in (???) as part of the deal.
SO the whole deal of merlin trying to change his mind could be irt emigrants but uther has filled his son's head with utter bullshit propaganda, so there's that.
i LOVE aus where merlin is a hacker! could have him forging papers for those who need them, since it's something he already does in canon and i think he'd be unrepentant. with the bonus that if he's working for arthur he has access to, idk what they're called, official records!? and can modify them directly.
i imagine you could also place it in UK but with a bit of pseudo-history going on-- (i don't know a lot about the topic so forgive my ignorance) like maybe back in the day the Celts weren't completely conquered or something and kept strong through the centuries, with their culture and practices intact, and everything was chill, with Celts living along with everyone else until something happened uther fabricated an incident that started the persecution, and since it's a modern army (think of it happening in the 1970-80s???) uther is able to subdue them, commit justified genocide, and steal some resources. balinor was probably someone important in the resistance that tried to broke a peace treaty but uther betrayed him (and imprisoned kilgharrah in the process????) and since he had a bounty on his head, after spending a season with hunith, he goes into hiding.
so not only would merlin be a master hacker and a vigilante helping all kinds of people wronged by the system, he'd also be trying to change arthur's mind on the topic of the Celts and emigrants etc.
these backgrounds would give merlin and lancelot something in common and also a Reason to fight for the greater good. plus if lancelot ever started working for arthur he'd have to keep merlin's secret identity (both his ancestry and criminal alias) a secret and help him out in breaking the law :DDDDDD

And people really do try to interact with fandom like consumers! They want ยซย contentย ยป. They act like they can get a refund on reading a fic they donโt like. They add fanfics to goddamned goodreads without a second thought without realizing thatโs as ridiculous as adding your friendโs dining room as a restaurant on yelp just so you can post a review about it
[Image IDs: Image #1: Tweet from heartSpocky (@/ heartSalty) reading: when people are like "i can't believe i ventured into fandom, a subculture for freaks, and found freaks there" like i'm really sorry that you were led to think that shipping was a cool and normal activity that cool people do. leave
Image #2: Tumblr tags from ravenVsFox reading: I think ppl have come to think that fandom means like. being a consumer of something generally, and are so comically ill-prepared for the depth and breadth of what fandom actually implies, these clowns are like 'some freaks want these non canon characters to fuck haha sure are some crazies in this fandom', and it's like. youre the outlier here my friend. you are like a little baby, just opening livejournal would have killed you instantly /End ID]
So as it turns out your sense of self doesnt exist in a vacuum. You gotta actually use it and bounce it off of other people like echolocation to see where you are as a person and shit. So if you dont regularly interact with other people the echoes just get weaker and weaker and before you know it your personality is a blurry fucked up fog clone of its former self. which it sucks because this makes it really hard to interact with people again but yknow
If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.

According to the CDC, in 10 percent of those drownings, the adult will actually watch the child do it, having no idea it is happening. Drowning does not look like drowningโDr. Pia, in an article in the Coast Guardโs On Scene magazine, described the Instinctive Drowning Response like this:
โExcept in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help. The respiratory system was designed for breathing. Speech is the secondary or overlaid function. Breathing must be fulfilled before speech occurs.
Drowning peopleโs mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface of the water. The mouths of drowning people are not above the surface of the water long enough for them to exhale, inhale, and call out for help. When the drowning peopleโs mouths are above the surface, they exhale and inhale quickly as their mouths start to sink below the surface of the water.
Drowning people cannot wave for help. Nature instinctively forces them to extend their arms laterally and press down on the waterโs surface. Pressing down on the surface of the water permits drowning people to leverage their bodies so they can lift their mouths out of the water to breathe.
Throughout the Instinctive Drowning Response, drowning people cannot voluntarily control their arm movements. Physiologically, drowning people who are struggling on the surface of the water cannot stop drowning and perform voluntary movements such as waving for help, moving toward a rescuer, or reaching out for a piece of rescue equipment.
From beginning to end of the Instinctive Drowning Response peopleโs bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued by a trained lifeguard, these drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs.โ
This doesnโt mean that a person that is yelling for help and thrashing isnโt in real troubleโthey are experiencing aquatic distress. Not always present before the Instinctive Drowning Response, aquatic distress doesnโt last longโbut unlike true drowning, these victims can still assist in their own rescue. They can grab lifelines, throw rings, etc.
Look for these other signs of drowning when persons are in the water:
Head low in the water, mouth at water level
Head tilted back with mouth open
Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus
Eyes closed
Hair over forehead or eyes
Not using legsโvertical
Hyperventilating or gasping
Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway
Trying to roll over on the back
Appear to be climbing an invisible ladder
So if a crew member falls overboard and everything looks OKโdonโt be too sure. Sometimes the most common indication that someone is drowning is that they donโt look like theyโre drowning. They may just look like they are treading water and looking up at the deck. One way to be sure? Ask them, โAre you all right?โ If they can answer at allโthey probably are. If they return a blank stare, you may have less than 30 seconds to get to them. And parentsโchildren playing in the water make noise. When they get quiet, you get to them and find out why.
Can I just say thank you to OP for putting such a detailed description on this?
Iโve been a lifeguard for 6 years now and of all the saves Iโve done, maybe two or three had people drowning in the stereotypical thrashing style. And even those, like the save I made last weekend, it was exactly like OP describes where the personโs head is going in and out of the water but it isnโt long enough to get any air. Mostly you recognize drowning by the look on someoneโs face. If someone looks wide eyed and terrified or confused, chances are theyโre drowning. That look of โoh shitโ is pretty easily recognizable. And even if you canโt tell for sure: GO AFTER THEM ANYWAY. Iโve done โsavesโ where a kid was pretending to drown and I mistook it for real drowning, but thatโs preferable to a kid ACTUALLY drowning.
Also please remember that even strong swimmers can drown if they have a medical emergency, get cramps, or get too tired. If your friend knows how to swim but theyโre acting funny get them to land. And even if someone can respond when you ask them if they need help, if they say they do need help? GO HELP THEM.
However . If the victim is a stranger, I canโt recommend trying to get them. Lifeguards literally train to escape โattacks,โ because people who are drowning can freak the fuck out and grab you and make YOU drown as well. If you do go in after someone, take hold of them from the back and talk to them the whole time. IF YOU ARE GRABBED: duck down into the water as low as you can get. The person is panicking and wonโt want to go under water and should release you. Shove up at their hands and push them away from you as you duck under. Donโt die trying to save someone else.
Please guys, read and memorize this post. Not all places have lifeguards. Being able to recognize drowning is such an important skill to have and you can save someoneโs life.
In a water park once, I was suddenly grabbed by a child and he dragged me under the water without warning. I was going to get angry with him when I resurfaced because I thought he was being an ass, until I looked at him go back in and out hyperventilating the entire time. I grabbed him under his arms and began trying to drag him out while screaming for the lifeguard.
When the lifeguard got us both out, a woman came running down and accused me of harming him and said he had been completely fine in the water. That there was no reason to drag him out of there. The lifeguard had to explain to her that her son had been drowning, to which her response was to say that she didnโt hear him call for help.
Also! You shouldnโt swim alone. I doesnโt matter if youโre a good swimmer. I typically swim 60 laps several times a week at the local Y. Iโve been swimming since I was three and competitively in my teens. I can swim a couple miles non-stop. And I recently got a really bad cramp mid swim. Luckily I was able to grab the lane divider and, in the end, I needed the life guard to help me to the side of the pool with his rescue floaty thing because my leg wouldnโt uncramp and I was suddenly not really able to swim. If that happened while I was somewhere alone? I might not have made it.
Never swim alone.
One of the major ways Elementary stands out from other Holmes adaptations to me is how they wrote Watson. Like it wouldโve been so easy to write her like any other Watson, brilliant, yes, undoubtedly, but forever attached to Sherlock. Watson is there because Sherlock wills it so, because Sherlock needs a rock and because Sherlock Holmes is a man forever in need of a partner. Usually.
But they broke that. They said this is Dr Joan Watson, and she is incandescent and ruthless. Sheโs a surgeon and thereโs an episode where Sherlock says surgeons have a healthy dose of god complex and you think sure buddy and then Joan threatens Moriarty in the middle of a restaurant and you go, huh. She learns to pick pockets and watches out of boredom. She changed careers over and over again till she found the one that fit. She became a detective and could and would absolutely kill a man and vouch for someone killing a man because itโs Sherlock and she loves him very much. Sheโs a partner, in the very literal sense. She kept track of murders as a teenager. She enchanted the most dangerous woman on the planet and EARNED her protection. Sheโs a cancer survivor. She threatens gangs and online hacker conglomerates in free time. Sheโs a mother. Sheโs half of two people who love each other very much. She moved across oceans for him and she would do it again.

post cancelled I've been told the term i used already exists in english and that it means something Very Much Different. english is a wicked language that i regret learning
the rule of tumblr is that all your most insightful commentary must be buried under a mandatory "This is What You stupid fucking people Don't Fucking Get" just make it as hostile and offputting as possible. really aim to make people unsafe, cause we all know that's when people are most likely to listen
