Look, I love the fae jokes. Hozier looks like he was pulled from a bog after a 1,500 year nap. His lyrics are poetic and morbid and romantic in a very other worldly way. BUT He’s right. Hozier has talked A LOT about how his music could not, would not exist without decades of innovation and creativity by Black artists. His entire style is based on soul and gospel and blues, WHICH ARE GENRES CREATED BY BLACK PEOPLE.

If you are American, PLEASE SUPPORT THE SSI RESTORATION ACT OF 2021

This new bill has been introduced in both the house and the Senate.

Among other things, it will:

Raise the monthly disability income by just over 30 percent - bringing it to poverty level.

Remove penalties for recieving financial help from friends and family.

Increase the amount of assets a disabled person may have from $2,000 to $10,000 (this hasn't been updated since 1989)

Update outside income restrictions to allow disabled people to receive up to $399 a month without reducing their benefits.

REWARD, not penalize, people who want to receive additional income while on social security income.

REMOVE THE MARRIAGE BAN YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT THIS WILL REMOVE THE MARRIAGE BAN

For those unaware current regulations do a lot to oppress disabled people. In fact marriage equality doesn't even extend to disbled people who risk having their benefits reduced or outright taken away if they marry someone. This means that in common law states disabled people can't even live with their significant other or they risk losing their financial independence.

Current regulations mean that if you're disbled you can't have so much as one penny over $2,000 to your name. So buying a car and gaining more independence or freedom is largely out of the question for disabled people.

Current regulations penalize social security recipients who receive income from outside sources, even if those sources are reimbursement. Did you get paid to babysit for a few hours? That's income, and you get your benefits reduced. Did you loan a friend $10 and they pay you back? The government considers that $10 income, and you get your benefits reduced.

These aren't mere anecdotes - these are all examples of actual things that have happened to disbled people I know, and if you have any disabled friends in your life I'm sure they can tell you the same stories.

If you value marriage equality, if you value financial independence, if you value the rights of disbled people, please PLEASE support this bill! Contact your reps, vote, and make noise! This is a great thing!

So this is just a PSA, y'all should never sign a contract until you read it. I’m talking in rl right now. I just got through reading my employee handbook/service contract and my bosses slipped in a lot of bullshit like telling me I can’t complain about my job on social media, demanding I work off the clock in the name of good service, expects me to show up on time during inclimate weather, and considered disability or religious accommodation a direct threat to the company.

These are all things I took issue with and brought to my employer for further discussion before signing the contract. Most of my coworkers signed without reading, treating it like an internet terms of service contract.

Tl;dr real life is serious shit, lawyers write contracts to protect your employer FROM YOU, read contracts before you sign them - fucking ARGUE about contracts before you sign them

Also important to note, and something my bf has repeated to me many times: a contract is a negotiation until it is signed, and YOU ARE ALLOWED TO AMEND IT. Tech companies often put some bs in there about “we own everything you make while you work for us” which broadly applied also means anything done on your own time. He always ALWAYS does write-in amendments with initial and date to state that they only own things done FOR the company, on company time, because there have been companies that enforced that bullshit when somebody had a personal side project the company decided they wanted to steal. There’s only one company that threw a fit at his attempts to amend it and he considered that a huge red flag and refused to sign, turned down the job.

Never. EVER. Sign shit without reading it. Also: if your prospective employer won’t let you take the thing home to read before you sign it and says you need to sign it then and there THAT IS A RED FLAG. The job I had that turned out to be abusive as shit was like that. Every other job I’ve been able to bring the contract home to my parents to have a more experienced set of eyes on it. It’s also common practice in some fields to have one’s attorney look over it before signing. So never let them tell you that you can’t look over it with someone else. That’s a fat load of shit. For “lower level” jobs they may not accept amendments to the contract but if they won’t even give you the proper time to read it over, they’re trying to pull some bullshit on you and you’re going to regret it if you sign. Even if there’s nothing bad in what you signed it’s an example of how they are going to treat you while you’re there. Take it to heart and run like fucking hell.

Never ever ever sign shit without reading and re-reading it! Take it home, show it to someone more experienced, if you can, show it to a lawyer. A contract is supposed to work for both sides. A company in Toronto tried to make me sign a contract with clause that in event of me leaving the job I will not work in a similar position anywhere in Ontario. Yeah, right, not enforceable in court, dudes, you can’t prevent me from making a living. Read the shit and don’t let them intimidate you.

Hi. I‘m a lawyer. Ask for at least 24 hours before you sign a work contract. You do not have to sign within 30 seconds of the contract hitting the desk. It is absolutely standard procedure. It gives you time to show it to a lawyer or go to a public counselor and have them look it over. In-room signing is another way companies blindside and intimidate you. Don’t be rushed. This is an absolutely normal thing to do. People who try to harangue you or hurry you along are sketchy.

For those who haven’t heard, this woman in Arkansas was speeding by a slight margin (5 miles) and was flagged to pull over by an officer. She put on her blinker and got into the right most lane, then slowed and put her hazards on, indicating she was looking for a safe place to pull over. This is actually what police departments, and this one specifically, tell people to do. The shoulder on that road was quite narrow, and she was likely waiting to exit the interstate.

Despite this, the officer slowly gains on her and uses a pit maneuver to spin her car out. This sent her (and her unborn child) careening into the median and completely flipping the car. The officer is heard calling for ems in a very calm voice.

From what I can find, the woman is alright, as is her child. She’s looking to pursue legal action against the officer, who has defended his actions by claiming she was driving wildly and swerving. As I’ve seen so far, he is still being paid and on the force.

She was mistaken for not pulling over since she could have, but she very clearly had every intention of pulling over shortly, and using a potentially deadly maneuver on someone VERY CLEARLY just confused about how to safely proceed is inexcusable. She was also allegedly going 15mph over, not 5, but it's an empty highway so it's not like that difference matters, just want to keep facts straight.

COVID is slowly becoming a "third world" disease. While first world countries are hoarding vaccines, having doses for populations many times their size, third world countries can't get any because pharma companies want to sell to the first world countries first. Even then, first world countries will receive them first. While rich countries recover from COVID, they will forget about the pandemic while many other countries live the absolute worst moment of the pandemic without being able to vaccinate their population.

I’ve had this dream before, I jump over the back fence and we run into the wild. I’m nervous and it’s cold, it’s always cold here. That strange fall/winter grayspace is upon us each time I dream of this. I shiver in my thin jacket, why did I go along with this? Why do I let her convince me to do this each time? Will I dream once where I tell her no, and she goes alone?

We walk among this tree line for a bit, then we’ll go deeper into the forest where she wants to hide. It is never revealed what exactly she plans to do. I know it is to run away, but what else is to it? So far nothing, I assume she wants to hitchhike to where some boy lives and stay with him.

In this dream I never ask, just follow and agree with her. Everything she says I give her reaction back, she laughs and nods her head, and I mimic. She crosses the street unsafely and I do too. Apparently here is where I officially lose my sense of individuality and choice.

She grabs my hand now, and pulls me farther along. All I think about is how much I want my mom, and how upset she will be. Asking me how I could do this to her and why. Ask if there’s something she did wrong and I’ll cry back that I don’t know.

In the back of my mind I know how it will end, I’ve dreamt of this so many times now. My mother will eventually find us and I get in the car while she drives me home. Lecturing me all the way and then it will stop. Then I will wake up still stressed, the dream was so vivid that at first I don’t realize it was just a dream. I’ll lay in bed staring somewhere as my stomach does flips and I think, until more thoughts trickle through my mind and I realize it didn’t really happen. It’s more like a nightmare, with how I awake exhausted, like I really had walked all those miles. My subconscious won’t allow me rest.

But I’m still dreaming here, and she still has my hand in her vice grip. She must know I was thinking about my home, and how I want to go back.

She isn’t as soft as I am. Her parents don’t care as much as mine, her mother not as loving.

This is just how our relationship works, she struts ahead while I follow behind like a dog. Occasionally I’ll walk in front with the short leash she keeps me on, then when I go too far she pulls back on her choke-chain of love. When I listen to her and stay with my tail wagging she’ll tell me how much of a good girl I am.

She decides to take a break and takes a seat against a tree in this dense forest. I don’t know where it came from, there are no forests near my house. I sit crosslegged next to her. She pulls out candy for herself and I grow more tired, she didn’t even bring me something to eat. But then she pulls out a Hershey bar and hands it to me.

Again, this is how it works. She is uncaring most of the time, but will remember my birthday or just act particularly sweet, and my organs melt inside of me. I take a bite of the half melted chocolate to keep my intestines from spilling bubblegum pink out of my mouth. In this moment, everything is soft.

But soon it is over, our time of eating melted chocolate in the cold forest, and it’s back to walking.

We hear movement, a skinny man is walking towards us. I am frightened at his speed, and the bones jutting out from underneath his shirt.

I shove myself behind her, I’ve been sheltered my entire life while she’s been allowed to walk the streets. I think of all the horrible things he could do to us, and how my grandmother is right. I would never survive alone.

It is nearing the end of this dream now. I turn and see my mom’s car approaching. Instead of the deep forest we were once in, we are now next to a road.

The car stops, and my mother gets out. This is where my memory becomes hazy, I don’t know how but I’m in the car and she’s disappointed. I blink back the guilty tears welling in my eyes.
