I have to add that gender euphoria for cis people doesn't always come from like, conforming to your gender in a "stereotypical" way
I've always been very comfortable with my gender but I didn't Really Like being a woman until I cut my hair short and started dressing/presenting more "masculine."
When i realized that I could look "manly" as a woman I truly felt comfortable and really...more "like" a woman. I enjoy being masculine and it strengthens my connection to womanhood and it's just kinda cool
witnessed this in real time after giving my then-3-year-old daughter a pixie cut. Once people started assuming she was a boy, because at the time she was neck deep in a spiderman phase, she started having symptoms of gender dysphoria. Both of her moms being under the trans umbrella, we could recognize it very easily. She started wearing exclusively pink and dresses after that and she's never looked back. She still loves short hair but opts for a bob instead.
There's an early episode of the Doctor Who reboot, The End of the World, that introduces Cassandra O'Brien. If you've been on tumblr long enough, you've seen her, even if you haven't watched the show:
In this episode, there's a throwaway line (it gets expanded upon in a novel, apparently) implying that she is transgender. And perhaps I'm reading too much into RTD's intentions here, but in neither that episode nor any of her repeat appearances, her gender is never denied.
What she is denied is humanity, on the basis of having had so many surgeries to keep herself looking "young and pretty" that she is just a flap of skin with a face stretched across a rack. That's not even subtext, that's just text, Rose has a brief monologue about it towards the end of the episode.
And there's something so deeply unexamined there, about how surgery to change your gender is fine and morally neutral, but anything else that modifies your body is Unnatural and Bad and makes you Less Human.
Anyway rewatching that episode and noticing that dissonance radicalized me even more in favor of transhumanism and bodily autonomy. Your body is yours and you can do literally whatever the fuck you want with it and nobody should be able to stop you. There's no amount of body modifications where you stop being meaningfully human. There's no moral element to cosmetic surgery, and getting it to look closer to how you want is just as Fine for cis people as it is for trans people.
Kawkaw wants to play!
I understand that you were aiming for a morally grey protagonist, but in practice what you've ended up with is more of a moral beige.
@ancient-tree-with-deathwish replied:
how do you distinguish grey from other colours beyond black and wite?
Distinguishing features of moral beige:
The protagonist is constantly agonising over Hard Choices; however, circumstances always conspire to prevent them from actually having to make those choices, so in practice they're just angsting over stuff they might have done.
The text exhibits a recurring pattern whereby the protagonist seems to to have made a Hard Choice, but new information is reliably revealed shortly thereafter which retroactively establishes that whatever they did was the morally upright course after all.
The protagonist's moral impulses are straightforwardly heroic, except in one specific context which lacks any clear real-world analogue; for example, being prejudiced against telepaths.
The protagonist's actions are consistently reasonable based on the information available to them β they're merely operating on bad information basically all the time due to a bizarre conspiracy and/or a series of increasingly implausible misunderstandings.
The protagonist always ends up doing the right thing (for some fuzzy value of "right"), but, like, they're really grumpy about it.
The worst versions of the Doctor fall into this.
I still remember being annoyed whenever The Doctor was going to have to make a hard choice or do some heroic sacrifice, but then someone else does it instead. Really thinking of the resolution of the one arc with the sontarans making like, evil car air conditioner or something. He was threatening to blow himself and the ship up, but then the former antagonist swaps places with him and does it. And it saves the doctor from having to face any loss, and from having to figure out what to do with that fucker.
Though if we expand "morally beige" to be more about the story itself, there's also the one episode where they have these pods that have you experience 8 hours of sleep in minutes. And it's shaping up to be a critique of capitalism and how the owning class will extract every second of labor you can give if you can let them. And then oops it turns out that it's actually bad because if you don't get 8 hours of real all-natural sleep per night then your eye gunk will turn into sand monsters and kill you.
Next up someone is going to claim that the Narnia series isn't kids books.
Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.
I want you to understand this. I NEED you to understand this. My mother read me the hobbit as bedtime story, and I started pushing myself to read before pre-school so I could in fact read the hobbit for myself instead of having to wait for bedtime.
I didn't do so right away but jesus wept I PUSHED myself to learn to read SPECIFICALLY so I could read The Hobbit! It is, in fact, a children's story! And children only see page count as 'there is a lot of this fun story to read!'

So no one else has to look this up. Sheβs the creative director of Warframe.
Very funny additional context for this: Warframe just had its annual convention, that culminates in a big livestream showing off the next major update, and she had to miss it because of medical issues.
She is fine, to be clear. But she knew she'd be missing it, because of surgery, when she made that tweet.
Also they had the audience at Tennocon sing a get well soon song for her. That was pretty cool.
You have to separate the art from the Garfunkel
when people who want to be vaguely progressive say 'nature' all secular style but it's painfully obvious they mean 'god' while thinking they don't mean god
"natural behaviour" "the natural body" "nature intended" "nature created" no da fuck it didn't
βCulture tends to argue that it forbids only that which is unnatural. But from a biological perspective, nothing is unnatural. Whatever is possible is by definition also natural. A truly unnatural behaviour, one that goes against the laws of nature, simply cannot exist, so it would need no prohibition.β - Yuval Noah Harari
π₯ do you have and opinion on trans-humanism
Look I don't have a whole tag of 'hubris is a coward's word' for nothing.
Anyway 99% of humanity's evolutionary and civilization success comes down to using tools and prostheses for things most animals need to rely on natural attributes to accomplish at all. There's a spectrum that starts with clothing and cooking fires and ends with disembodied brains and remote-controlled drone bodies, and any bright line you draw on it about where 'human' stops is going to be more or less arbitrary.
Also anyone who uses 'natural' as an unambiguously positive quality is welcome to go consider historical infant mortality rates.
I think more non binary characters should be fat
fat and black and brown ππΎ
kinda tired of non binary being tied to skinny androgyny that's mostly white. I say that's as a non binary transmasc/boy thing who's fat and black.
being non binary can look like anything and anyone but especially individuals who have different body types outside of thin. they can have body/facial hair too. show up for all enbies.

Sucks how often shonen anime and action(y) games and such mostly treat female characters as props or rewards because when the effort is actually put in to make them characters they're so fucking good. Some of if not the best characters in their respective media.
Momo Ayase, Seiko Ayase, Turbogranny, Riza Hawkeye, Gabby Kagemori, Susie Deltarune, Queen Deltarune, Queen Deltarune again (she deserves it), Nico Robin, Power Chainsawman, Marcille and Falin Touden, Tome Kurata, Jolyne Cujoh, Bayonetta, Alyx Vance, I'm sure I could go on but I'm tired of listing characters.
Its frustrating seeing female characters sidelined when ones that are given even half a chance to shine do with such frequency.
