Elizabeth Ravn Downtime Deborah Schamoni, Munich April 21 – June 10, 2023
It is actually scary seeing people who just fully aren't aware that marriage is about way more than a paper or about "getting the government involved" with your relationship. Marriage provides a lot of legal and financial benefits that I don't think people are fully aware of, like:
having joint health insurance plans or being under your spouse's insurance
social security and life insurance payouts
more tax things than I can honestly think of
combined credit scores for the purpose of applying for a loan or mortgage
hospital visitation rights
the right to make medical decisions for your spouse when they're unable to; if there isn't an established medical directive AND a durable power of attorney of healthcare for your partner, these rights go to the next of kin even if they're abusive or you're estranged
the ability to sue on your behalf if you die
the right to make decisions regarding your last rites and your funeral
inheritance!!!
CHILD CUSTODY!!! if you have a child anf they are not biologically your non-married partner's or legally adopted by them, there is absolutely no guarantee that your partner would get custody if anything happened to you; even if it's in your will, wills are just suggestions in terms of child custody, and the court will hear out any adults who have a claim and will often side with biological family (your siblings, your parents, or the child's other bio family) over the parent's unmarried partner, even if you've been living together for years and the child knows them as another parent. this has been used by abusive and bigoted family to steal grieving children from their other parent
Do I think all of these things should be exclusive to marriage? No. Do I know another solution? Also no. Is this the realoty we live in regardless? Yes! There is a reason why marriage has been something people have fought for for so long and so hard, whether it's interracial marriage or gay marriage or whatever else, these are all rights exclsuive to married couples and something that you absolutely need to consider when starting a life with someone, especially if you have children or plan to have them in the future.
In the US, disabled people face systemic discrimination when it comes to marriage. To be specific, when one or both partners is disabled and receiving SSI and/or Medicaid, there is something called a marriage penalty which happens whenever disabled people get married.
The result of this marriage penalty may range from not getting benefits at all, to receiving reduced benefits. This is only happens to disabled people who are receiving SSI benefits and/or are eligible for Medicaid.
Also some of these you will not realise, until it's too late. "Oh, if you were married, you could have inherited his pension... Too bad, now it's gone.", "You have no more right to live in this council house than any stranger, since legally she was a single person... You're going to the bottom of the housing list, since you don't have dependents and you're in mostly good health. You have a month to whittle a lifetime of shared life into what fits in your van." Etc.
This is why the disabled people fighting for marriage equality aren't just being sentimental, and why there is a good argument for bringing poly marriage into the political conversation too.
By the way, for the purposes of SSI, they don't use legal marriage. They use commonlaw marriage — when you spend more than three nights a week with someone. I forget for how long, but not very.
You can lose your social security benefits for sleeping at someone's house too much while having no legal protections if one of you gets sick.

It is so ridiculously easy to gain a reputation for being competent by just reading signs.
This is not metaphorical. I mean actual, literal pieces of paper/plastic/metal/whatever explicitly erected to inform the public.
“How did you know this was the right trail?” I read the sign.
“Wow, how did you know what that flower is?” There’s a SIGN.
“How did you know we needed to use the side door?” THERE IS A SIGN POSTED ON THE FRONT DOOR.
Just…why are we having such different experiences of the world? People can read. I KNOW they can read. There’s nothing wrong with their vision.
Just. READ. THE. GOD. DAMN. SIGN.

love the phrase "but I digress." yes I temporarily got lost in the moors I wander in my mind but don't worry I'm self-aware about it
Ok this is it, I have to get something of my chest. Because of this goddamned Odyssey film I keep reading everywhere that Emily Wilson is the first woman to translate the Odyssey and because of this she has a unique take on the text.... NO NO NO THIS IS NOT TRUE she's the first ENGLISH woman to translate the Odyssey but women have been translating and publishing their translation since the 1700s !!!! In French and Italian and I'm sure other languages too!!
I'm so mad because students in Italy have been studying on Rosa Calzecchi Onesti's translation for decades!! Her translation is so well regarded it keeps being used in academia to this day and it's from the 60s!!! There have been dozens of other translations since then but we keep using that one !!!
(and also many other women published their translations both before and after her)
The irresistible urge of english/american ppl to make universal statements out of their experience
Fuck it, post lamb stew slow cooker recipe
How high was I last night?
How much lamb stew did I want to make??
1,814¾ lbs of Lamb????
>960 cups beef broth >2 bay leaves
the unfathomable power of bay leaf

"Indeed, when he applied to become an astronaut, he failed on the first attempt. Part of the test featured the famous Rorschach ink-blots psychiatric exam. “I leafed through a whole series of them, and then the last one was a blank sheet of paper, pure white, eight by 10,” he once recalled. “I was asked what I could see. And I said, ‘Well, of course, that’s 11 polar bears fornicating in a snow bank.’ And I could see the examiner’s eyes kind of tighten. He didn’t think that was funny.”"
The examiner was, in fact, objectively incorrect.

harry potter fans in 2025
people DESPERATE in the notes to explain why the way THEY engage with harry potter is morally pure. It's like white people talking about rap music in there! Libraries buy the books! Fanfiction maintains a conversation around the IP! There is NO WAY to enjoy harry potter in 2025 without publicly supporting JK Rowling!
Please stop fucking reading it so the library doesn't have to pay her money. I am a transgender librarian and I am not allowed to not replace old damaged HP books, people read them so we need to have them on our shelves, and what she does with the money doesn't factor into it.
STOP READING HARRY FUCKING POTTER.
I used to be into it! In-depth character analysis, wizard rock, irl quidditch, but when she outed herself as a piece of shit, I couldn't support it anymore!
ASK YOUR LIBRARY FOR OTHER BOOKS TO READ AND STOP READING HARRY FUCKING POTTER.
Especially in the year of our Cailleach 2026. Please. I’m literally begging you. There’s so many other fantasy books to read. Many of which are written by adults who grew up on HP as children, and have some of the same elements. Please. I’m on my knees.
HP is my childhood. it was literally my first hyper fixation. but to enjoy harry potter is to support JKR. i cant enjoy the books/merch/movies/ANYTHING harry potter related because to support HP is to support transphobes. and i wont do that. this is 2025 people we can give up fictional characters to support the very real human beings who are being targeted and attacked by JKR. grow up.
Magical middle grade series you can read instead of Harry Potter: The Incorruptibles by Lauren Magaziner Witchlings by Claribel A. Ortega The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston These are just off the top of my head - they're so good and INCLUSIVE and you will love them. I know there's more too. Ask at your local library!
