Watching pre-Hays Code Hollywood films can be a bit of a roller coaster because they'll hit you with surprisingly positive queer representation for a film from 1931, then immediately follow it with the most racist thing you've ever seen.
true. but. tangent. the Hays Code was incredibly regressive--a set of compulsory censorship rules for film to promote a one-sided "moral" perspective on the "correct standards of life". On the face of it, this was promoting the white nuclear family (and so white supremacy, heterosexuality, and classism), Christian piety, rule of law (as in crime must always be punished and the police/state is virtuous), and not to mention extremely traditional gender roles. As you can imagine, this also came down hard on sympathetic, honest depictions of people of color, homosexuality, independent women... and pretty much anything that did not square with the conservative status quo. the deeper motivations behind the Hays Code was politics--to keep the "dangers" of communism at bay (even before the McCarthy Red Scare this was a concern). How best to do that than to impose extreme censorship on filmmakers and muzzle independent thought in a new art form rapidly gaining popularity? So yes, while pre-code film has some incredibly racist content--1915's Birth of a Nation is the big one; there's a few Buster Keaton films that are unfortunately blemished with blackface, and there's undoubtedly many more. And undoubtedly, the 1910s-1920s were some of the most horrifyingly, violently racist years in American history--it's no wonder that some of this would be reflected in the films of white filmmakers of the time. But code-era film is also rife with blackface, overt racism, Confederate sympathizing (Gone with the Wind, anybody?), often in contexts that are subtler but similarly horrifying, because they are presented in insidious veneers of respectability, upholding racist, conservative values more effectively, I'd wager. The ones holding the reins got smarter, that's all. This is a long-winded way to say there's nothing rosy about the Hays Code, only that it preached "respectability" and conformity. Not to say that code-era films regurgitated its values--some of the best films of all time come from this era, when filmmakers tried to find loopholes in the code (like the kissing scene in Hitchcock's Notorious, for example). It's a testament to the strength of film as a medium that enough boundary-pushing happened to kill it entirely (thank you, Some Like It Hot, for putting the final nail in its coffin!) Don't sleep on pre-code film, though--for all the uglier depictions and content that may arise, there is, in many films, a sense of independence and experimental spirit that is absent in many code-era films--especially in silent films.

you like that? I got more, how bout the SS Bessemer
This experimental piece o' shit, courtesy of Sir Henry Bessemer, had a stabilized cabin meant to combat seasickness. Unfortunately, due to the kinetic consequences of building a ship like that, it also combatted seaworthiness, and the instant this thing touched water it enthusiastically slammed itself into the pier with all the grace of a twelfth round boxer.
Not to be deterred, Bessemer repaired the ship, hired a veteran sea captain, slapped the stern and sent her out for a second go. The ship then proceeded to crash into the Same Fucking Pier even harder, demolishing it.
The SS Bessemer, her bloodlust satiated, retired from the cruise ship life and settled down in Swanley, where she became a billiard room, and then a lecture hall, and then rubble, due to an encounter with bombs.
This one's for the SS Bessemer. Rest in peace you wild bitch.

❗️Nevada voters - this is going to sound weird, but PICK UP YOUR PHONE if an unknown number calls.
**Lots of signatures on ballots are not matching and your ballot may need to be fixed.
TLDR; yes, signature matching is an antiquated way to verify ballots but it is still being used. Reportedly thousands of ballots here need to be cured. Answer the phone!
If you want to help cure Nevada ballots:
We need your help to make sure every voter’s ballot counts in this critical election! Join NV Dems in making phone calls to voters who need
If you vote in North Carolina, you're going to see this on your ballot. Looks pretty straightforward, right?
But it's a trap placed by the GOP. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Voting "For" this referendum will remove the phrase "and every person who has been naturalized" from this section on voter eligibility in the NC constitution. This could place the future voting rights of about 400,000 naturalized US citizens in the state in jeopardy.
Just a reminder - it's already illegal for non-citizens to vote! There's no evidence that this happens in significant numbers anywhere in the country, and North Carolina has restrictions in place against it happening at all, like the voter ID law that's now in effect.
(The voter ID law disproportionately affects POC, as well as transgender voters, both of whom are more likely to vote Democratic as well as lack the needed ID, but that's another post.)
Voting "Against" on this measure will leave the state constitution unchanged.

appalachia is devastated. towns i loved, towns i visited all the time, are gone. not damaged, GONE. they are leveled to the ground. there is nothing left but rubble and ruin. people are dead. appalachia is poor to begin with and relies on tourism for a lot of its income, and multiple of those tourist locations are just...gone.
my town is okay, but it's flooded and wrecked. trees are blocking all but one way out of our neighborhood. power lines are hanging limp in the roads. we've been without power for over 24 hours and will continue to be without power for likely another 24+. disabled people and poor people are GOING to die from this. gods save appalachia.
it's always a hit or miss with appalachian charities. a lot are just evangelism with no action behind what they do. i suggest looking into them before donating.

adding some additional photos from the other side of the mountains here in northeast tennessee. there has been genuinely catastrophic flooding in many areas and billions of dollars of damage across NETN and WNC. we are not built to withstand this. 33 people are currently missing in unicoi county alone
to those of you reblogging this, thank you. i have not seen one negative comment about appalachia and i cannot put into words what that means as someone who has lived here for their entire life. we are used to being mocked, scorned, and dismissed, to being the butt of classist jokes, and y'all aren't doing that. thank you. so much.

Selected Works from Gerda Wegener
Gerda Wegener was a Danish illustrator and painter, known for her exploration of gender and sexuality within her work. Many of her pieces were considered lesbian erotica during her life, though she herself never publicly identified as a lesbian. In fact, information about her life is quite limited. That said, many art historians and researchers believe that she herself may have been queer. Her work often depicted intimate scenes between women, androgyny, and gender variance. Her work, particularly her portraits, challenged social norms around gender and sexuality, and celebrated the beauty in that diversity.
Wegener is especially recognized for her portraits. One of her favorite subjects was her wife and fellow artist, Lili Elbe, who she often painted before Elbe's transition. In addition to her technical skills, Wegener was able to capture a sense of fluidity and sensuality that offered a unique perspective—one that was heavily discouraged at the time. Her work serves as a testament to the presence and contributions of queer women in the art world and continues to inspire contemporary artists exploring themes of sex, love, gender, and beauty.
You can find these works and more in our gallery!
