call me terminally academia-brained but i do think a lot of the fun of character analysis is figuring out how to build a compelling argument for a particular reading using lines of evidence from canon as well as meta/intertextual support
and you could say that what iβm saying here is basically βa lot of the fun of doing character analysis is doing character analysisβ but letβs be real a lot of fandom character analysis is pretty heavily vibes-based. and i think thatβs where i really chafe up against the traditional thought-terminating fandom attitude of like, everyoneβs opinions hold equal weight and any interrogation of that is inherently hostile. because i think itβs fascinating to dig into where others are coming from in terms of their views on characters or dynamics or whatever, especially when they differ significantly from more commonly expressed views, and part of that digging is asking people okay what parts of canon are you drawing from to support your opinion? what parts of canon are you disregarding or downplaying? how does this argument hold up in the light of how race, gender, class, ability, etc. operate both in the pieceβs in-fiction and real world contexts?
the horrors persist but my friends write beautiful fanfic

i love sibling estrangement as horror. Only one person in the entire world has been through what youve been through and they deny it . Awesome
@i-like-reblog-maps I heard you like large maps ^β _β ^
what the fuck
that thing is eldritch
acquired a dark mode version just to see what itβd look like. oh my god. this map is gorgeous
i have never seen a hub that large. iβm?? stunned
Didn't realise it was a reblog map at first, thought somebody was drawing the visual effect that accompanies casting Testicular Torsion.
watching doctor who is so funny because itβs a fairly harmless family show most of the time. but every few years This Guy shows up, clearly in some deeply dysfunctional, visibly sexual relationship (which they NEVER fully explain to you) with the otherwise normally family friendly main character.
heβs in maybe 3 episodes and then haunts the narrative for at least the next season. you look him up and this has been happening reliably since the 1970s and also heβs been, at various intervals, a cat, a skeleton, and a snake made of goo, during all of which the toxic yaoi has continued undisturbed
So Hank Green got caught using AI and itβs a whole huge blow up, and I really donβt have much interest in adding to the pile on.
However, I do think this case is great example of what happens when smart people decide they can use these systems βresponsibly.β
Letβs put aside the plagiarism and the energy use for a second (not that these donβt matter, but theyβre not relevant to my point at the moment) and pretend these systems were made with entirely properly obtained info and ran on only solar, but otherwise were entirely the same. If youβre a person, you might think βokay, Iβm going to only use this to come up with ideas for my next paper: Iβm going to do all the research myself and the writing, Iβm just gonna brainstorm topics.β
The thing is, even if youβre trying to limit use to just βbrainstormingβ the chatbot isnβt going to limit itself to just brainstorming. You might ask it βwhat should I write about involving Greek historyβ and it may suggest βthe plague of Athensβ but itβs also going to suggest some βbasic infoβ on the plague of Athens that you might end up picking up and deciding your topic is. Itβs going to provide you with βresearch.β And even if you decide to check that research yourself, thatβs still setting you down a specific path you might not have picked organically.
And speaking of double checking its βresearchβ, fact checking is a time heavy process. Not only now do you have to read the original text the bot provided, but you also have to compare it line by line with the summary the bot provided. Thatβs more time than it would have taken to just read the article by itself. And with any time heavy task, people are going to get lazy. And in original research being lazy might mean skimming a paper or an abstract, chatbots allow you to be lazy without looking at the article at all.
And soon enough, despite telling yourself you were only going to use it for brainstorming, you have offloaded topic generation, research and eventually even drafting because thatβs what these bots are intended to do. They are not meant to serve as research tools or help brainstorm or serve as a bouncing off board: they are built to encourage maximum engagement. And that means if you go at them with the best of ethical intentions, they are built to tempt you to use them as much as possible, regardless of whatever line you drew in the sand for yourself.
Anyway, my main thought here is you are not smart enough to outwit the dopamine machine. It wants your attention and nothing more. Do not assume you can resist just because you know whatβs under the hood.
The truth is, doing good research is time-consuming and inconvenient, even if itβs on a topic you profess to love. People will do anything to make getting work done easier.
I do physical therapy for a stretched muscle, and there are a few exercises that annoy me, but I know if I skip them once in a routine, I will take that as permission for myself to skip them indefinitely. I think thatβs what using LLMs does for general tasks.

for the lovely lovely deafies out there who want to get involved in direct action you absolutely 100% cannot ever bring a hearing aid or cochlear implant with bluetooth to any direct action. bluetooth devices all carry a unique signal that can be used to identify you if it's picked up at a direct action. go with a [more] hearing buddy and communicate in sign language. if you don't mutually know a sign language then come up with gestures. do not risk your freedom because you want to have your hearing aid/cochlear implant at the action. it's not worth it.
flock cameras are also now tracking bluetooth device signatures when you pass them. if you drive past a flock camera with your bluetooth-enabled hearing aid or cochlear implant, the flock camera knows you passed through

Trying to escape military service like: "Poison Seller, I require your weakest poisons."
it's actually so amazing she helped save the lives of the honorable men who did not wish to fight, while killing the most vile men, that is so fucking based
Find a humanitarian organization near you and volunteer with them. Do it. I mean it. Even like one day a week. Even an HOUR a week. This shit will change you in the best ways. Your circle will fill with cool people. THE HELPERS-- FIND THEM and then BE THEM
Being in close contact with people who give a shit and are also witnessing the descent of our country into fascism and ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT is actually mad refreshing in contrast to the pointless noise that is the internet.
You'll make such fast friends if you:
show up
say "where do you need me"
do what they say
have a good attitude
Done. Easy. Volunteering is awesome and will put you right in the lap of the best people in your area. They're the helpers, they're the people Mr. Rogers told you about!
Doing an easy task like potting trees for a community garden or helping at a food bank will also connect you to people who are doing more, like immigrant support or things that tackle more urgent, dangerous issues going on. So you can scale up your involvement easily by just showing up repeatedly.
Or don't scale it up-- maybe you stop at helping at the food bank and you're stacking cans for a few hours. You're feeding your neighbors. That's a load-bearing part of any revolution. (I use that word optimistically.) The people you meet will be the people you lean on when shit gets worse.
AND VICE VERSA, prove that you are someone to lean ON by showing up and helping. Offer things to people. Your skills may be helpful. Already, just because we've done local volunteering, we have made at least 5 or 6 new friends, got a potential firewood connection, and WELL-PAID EMPLOYMENT (??? OMG)
(and free lunches and snacks and fruit trees) And it's healing as fuck to have people genuinely tell you, in the flesh, to your face, "I'm so glad you showed up today. I appreciate you so much. This would have been harder without you." That shit makes you feel AWESOME and REAL and PURPOSEFUL
(We woke up early for a shift at the food bank, I'm hyping myself up because I am not a morning person LMAO) But yeah volunteering is such a good way to build security and community. There's something for everyone to help with, just get out there and show up, first.
My mentally stable son (and essek my son in law)
hes so.

Current mood
mood. and alternatively:Β
I'm gonna start saying "especially non binary ppl" when talking about trans issues. Trans people are really struggling, especially non binary ppl, because we're treated like jokes and freaks in our own communities. I'm kind of sick and tired of things being "especially" about everyone else but us
Non binary people are treated like the scapegoats of the trans community, everything is our fault. We're too loud, to assertive, too annoying, too cringe. Too out there, we are visibly trans a lot of the time, and that pisses people the fuck off because we like it and it's a part of our gender identity and expression. We are just as oppressed and face just as much violence as everyone else
#passing refers to making our transness invisible
I am NOT letting you leave this in the tags prev it is so true. Non binary people cant pass because there is no way to pass for us. Passing as ANY GENDER is getting misgendered because it means others assuming we're binary people, and we're not.
One of the first feelings of dysphoria I got was the feeling of "everyone else will perceive me as a binary gender first and there is nothing I can do about it" and I wanted to stop existing at all, to stop having a body and stop being perceived so no one would dictate my identity for me.
Non binary people arent taken seriously on our own oppression, in talking about trans issues we're an afterthought, because if they cant categorize us then they refuse to talk about us. Binary people, cis and trans, get annoyed when we add onto a conversation with our non binary perspective, when we ask to be included in their talks about trans liberation and fighting against gender essentialism. We complain too much and we're too weird and too cringe, we cant use terms like transfem and transmasc without everyone assuming we're basically binary trans people, and binary trans people are so busy pitting transfem and transmasc as opposites while also saying "oh but we include non binary people!" No you dont, your inclusion is only for monogender enben whose gender is static and aligned with the binary. Because talking about only the existance of transfem and transmasc as two opposite exclusive sides is exorsexist as hell.
And dont get me started on how we dont fucking have LANGUAGE, there are so many languages that have no pronouns or neutral words to refer to people, existing in your native country means being misgendered.
We're either misgendered and invisible or misgendered and hypervisible. And people love to either act like we dont exist, or like we're basically binary cis or trans so there's no need to put effort in accounting for us.
Would like to respectfully amend and say especially nonbinary *and intersex people* who are often treated similarly because plenty of intersex people don't "pass" either and are treated with hostility for embracing their intersex identity and not choosing to transition to a binary sex/gender. Our oppression is intrinsically linked to intersexism within society and within the queer community imo.
Abolishing the gender and sex binary is imperative to the survival of all people but especially for nonbinary and intersex individuals. There is a lot of overlap between intersex and nonbinary identities, with 45% of intersex youth identifying as nonbinary per a 2024 Trevor Project report
