In mother 1, you can get a loaf of bread as an item. If you 'use' the bread, it'll turn into crumbs and the party will leave a trail of breadcrumbs as they walk around. If the crumbs are then used, it'll teleport you to where the trail started.

The glitch comes in if you have a temporary party member use the bread and then use the crumbs when they're gone. (Her name is pippi) If Pippi uses the bread and you activate the glitch, the game doesnt know where to put you so it sends you to invalid coordinates. This allows you to enter a glitched state where you can walk anywhere on the map.

This glitch was patched in the Mother 1+2 release, but it's still possible if you use a set of crumbs at the Reindeer Train Station.

Toby is a Mother fan. He has stated (in reference to mother 3) that 'if it comes to the west, you can play it and see how unoriginal I am.'

Pippi is a pretty strong character at the time you get her so a lot of people try to keep her in the party as long as possible (mother 1 is hard as shit)

A strong, temporary, party member that helps you glitch out of bounds? Who could that be?

In Chapter 5's weird route, sans gives you a loaf of bread with the description 'A loaf of bread. Tends to leave crumbs wherever it goes.' You can't get rid of this item and it's needed to progress. Kris takes the bread with them to the lake and probably has it the whole time.
