all snark aside, it’s odd to see “escapism” still be the bogeyman of discussion surrounding deltarune. i feel as though a lot of discussion of “escapism,” both within and outside of these spaces, sort of misses the mark on what the issue with escapism is. a piece of media that markets itself as “escapist” and simultaneously contains reflections of real-world bigotry or power structures is well worth critiquing. who gets to “escape” into those sorts of fantasies? how are these "escapist" fairy-tales used to enforce these real-world bigotries? but instead, it seems many feel the issue with escapism is simply that they see it as a refusal to fall in step with the "real world;" the "way things are supposed to be". discussion of portal fantasy more broadly has been watered down into labeling portal fantasies as admonishments to children who spend more time on their own interests than what has been deemed important by the adult world. the otherworlds within these stories are treated allegorically as a means to "ignore reality” regardless of how textual that is. “not accepting reality” is treated as the ultimate sin. i feel like this is something we should interrogate more. why do we place inherent value on the idea of tolerating things “as they are”? why are we treating defiances of this as acts that must be done only in moderation so as to keep from being led astray?
