if any of this is ever going to matter at all, WHY is it so unbelievably obscure? like, it's hard to imagine anything this could be building up to that would be satisfying, because you have to REALLY be in deep to know about any of this stuff.
imagine if you were a semi-casual player, you got to the secret boss of chapter 7 and they were like "Hee hee haa! Yes, it was all me! The shapes slinking through the dark, on the prowl, hunting you... Our little game of cat and mouse! It was me... And my pretty little kitties! But now, the prey has been caught, and our little game is over. And wouldn't you agree that they deserve a little treat for all their hard work? Yes... I think you will do quite nicely as their prize!"
you would not know what they mean by this. it would have no impact on you. because you would likely have not even seen them hunting you, even if you did all the shadow crystals, and maybe even the eggs. the appearances get more obscure each chapter...
i guess it could, rather than being meant to be buildup for a casual player, be a thing where you get to that point, learn about the cats hunting you, and then upon playing the game again you might see one and be like. wait. holy shit. theyve been here the whole time??? you can see them??? holy shitttt....
i guess showing up in the ch3 secret boss and in a mandatory cutscene in ch3 is kind of enough foreshadowing
