The problem with saying "Frankenstein is about [X]" is the same as saying "Dracula is about [X]"- these books are not fables, they are novels. They do certainly draw from their author's lives and the cultural zeitgeist around them, so you could say Frankenstein is about:
Mary Shelley's birth killing her mother
Mary Shelley's own baby dying
Mary Shelley never really getting her father's love and respect
Mary Shelley's close friendship with Lord Byron, who had been exiled from society
Mary Shelley being exiled from society herself following her elopement
Mary Shelley "breaking up" a marriage where the wife later (but before the book's publication) killed herself
A bad dream
Erasmus Darwin's experiments
A holiday in a place with history about alchemists
A ghost story contest
All of those things were surely on Mary Shelley's mind when she wrote Frankenstein, consciously or unconsciously. The book is about all of these things, and also it's about an entirely fictional scenario.
divinely neglected
just because someone can articulate their point better doesn’t make them right, it makes them articulated.
and you aren’t stupid for having trouble articulating yourself.

Another hilarious thing I feel we should talk about more is the fact that *film* Aragorn and Arwen break up right before Aragorn leaves Rivendell……. meaning that film!Aragorn spends most of the quest in an “oh my god my relationship of 50 years just ended what do I even do with myself????” depression haze.
It explains so much…..
Like. Externally Aragorn is on an epic quest to save Middle Earth, internally he’s crying on the couch in his sweatpants eating a tub of the Middle-Earth equivalent of Ben and Jerry’s
Legolas: Aragorn?
Aragorn: Arwen used to call me Aragorn…..
Legolas: Because it’s your fucking name
To be clear I actually love the film’s version of Aragorn/Arwen’s relationship, there’s a lot of Dramatic Potential/ angsty meta you could write on it, but–.
BUT
It’s also like– you think Aragorn has to put up with Legolas and Gimli’s annoying romance antics? Legolas and Gimli have to deal with Aragorn spending half the quest staring wistfully into the distance and sighing dramatically about What Can Never Be™…with how often he sings the Lay of Luthien, basically the Middle Earth equivalent of Adele’s Someone Like You….
Gimli: You haven’t washed your hair in MONTHS. We’re staging an intervention.
Aragorn (lying flat on the ground with his face in the dirt): aweralwkerjwae
Legolas: You’re only 87– you’ve got your whole life ahead of you. You can find love a second time!
Aragorn: I did. Boromir died.
Legolas: Maybe three is your lucky number!
#for me film Legolas’ main character trait#is that he’s incapable of reading the room (tags via @overthinkinglotr)
Aragorn, any time he gets a moment to himself during the quest:
Gimli: This lovely Rhohirrim woman is clearly into you. She’s a fighter. You’re a fighter. She loves horses. You love horses (also you smell like one). Give her a chance!
Aragorn: *flashbacks to him and Arwen making out in Imladris while the elvish version of “when somebody loved me” plays in the background.
He literally did this. (and then imagined Arwen kissing him before getting woken up by his horse)
At least he managed to wash himself AND his hair
*tricks you cutely* it's my trick...!
My top 5 disapprovals to get from dai
5. Getting the "cassandra greatly disaproves" when you free the mages to then hear her say "I don't disaprove" 4. Asking Solas what would he know about Court Intrigue if he never was in Court 3. When you tell Varric Orsino turning into a monster made no sense 2. When you tell Iron Bull he should talk about his feelings instead of getting hit by a stick 1. When you tell high approval Solas "im not special every person is complex dude"
Now that everyone is discussing Nolan's Odyssey movie, I feel like it's a good time to let non-Italians know that the production dumped plastic props into the Italian sea. Weirdly enough I could not find any article in English about it but it's a fucking problem nonetheless.
I might translate this article later today. This one was the most complete one, even in Italian news it's not talked about that much.
Non è la prima volta che la produzione solleva un vespaio in Sicilia. A Lipari una squadra di sub sarebbe però già impegnata a bonificare i
They dumped plastic skeletons in environmentally protected areas, against the literal contracts they had to sign to get the permits to film in environmentally protected areas. Like they not only did a bad ecological thing that freaked out some divers, they literally broke environmental protection laws and their contract with the Italian government
They also filmed in illegally occupied territories in western sahara
Sahrawi filmmakers criticise Christopher Nolan for complicity in Moroccan exploitation of Sahrawi land
The earrings, worn by Zendaya at The Odyssey press tour, are believed to be 2,000-3,000 years old and come at a time when the US is bombing
From the article:
“The practice of taking jewellery and other artefacts, especially those associated with the royal courts of great empires of the past, the Mughals, the Safavids, and others, and then allowing actors and celebrities to adorn them sends a clear message: not only will we not return what we took from you, because we consider ourselves more worthy custodians, but we also continue to occupy the symbolic position of monarchs and rulers over the lands from which these artefacts were removed”
- Zirrar Ali, London-based author and expert on Islamic history, art, and architecture
“…These pieces are likely looted from Iran and they are gracing the ears of an American actress from a country that just bombed Iran…also I think the irony of wearing historical jewellery to a movie that is an absolute train wreck of anachronistic language, armour, gender roles, pants, is a funny choice.”
- Dr. Z the Archaeologist
An article in English
Another article about the violation of international law in using another of the film’s locations.
The decision to shoot in Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara, where the Indigenous people can’t tell their stories without fear of imprisonment

trans men and transmascs do need to hear they aren't hurting anyone for being masculine, but more than that they need to hear that they are loved for being masculine. your masculinity is wonderful and magical and you pull it off incredibly well. your masculinity is cool, it's desirable, it's attractive. there are people out there who will be drawn to you because of your masculinity, not just in spite of it. you deserve more than just to be tolerated in queer spaces. your masculinity deserves to be celebrated
