something that i love about the texas arc is that christopher directly foils the diaz parents. helena and ramon have always been very critical of eddie, and they continue to be when he moves to texas. they judge his house and his job, and it makes eddie feel like a failure. he does everything he can to seem more put together, including buying chris an expensive gift, and it still does not impress them. he spends so much time focusing on these failures, he assumes chris will feel the same way. but instead, christopher finds out eddie lied about his job, and the first thing he does is return the expensive gift so his dad doesn't struggle. he tells eddie he is proud of him, firefighter or not, because eddie is his dad and he loves him. it's the same thing in the next episode. helena is being judgemental, but christopher just wants eddie in his life. christopher loves eddie because he is his dad, not because he is this perfect person who has never made a mistake. he loves his dad who shows up and keeps trying, no matter how hard it is. christopher's love (and in turn, eddie's love for christopher) is the thing that gives eddie the courage to stand up to his parents and forgive himself. christopher believes in eddie, so eddie starts believing in himself too.
