"A Girl & a Dragon in a Stellar Motel" A 2014 Girl & Dragon Malbec from Mendoza Argentina & Mike Doughty Stellar Motel also form 2014 It was a truly crazy night. There was a girl and a dragon and we were all in a Stellar Motel……. it’s concepts like this that I would imagine are why Mike no longer partakes of the wine but hopefully he can appreciate how this story might have ended happily. lol Girl & Dragon Malbec has the slogan on the bottle of “Be Fearless” and I would say it makes a great slogan for Mikes’ music as well. If you’re not familiar with his work you owe it to yourself to check it out. It makes for the perfect soundtrack for parties as this pairing initially described. This is a very nice Argentinian Malbec as many of them are. It took quite some time for it to truly open up. I mean literally it needed to breathe for about an hour before it truly revealed itself. A bit of patience and persistence yielded a really nice Malbec. Here’s to unleashing your inner dragon! A shadow slips over the land, as the day turns to night. "Urlo Pleasures" A 2013 Urlo Italian Red Blend & the 1979 Joy Division release “Unknown Pleasures” ur-lo \ur lo\ n. 1: A scream 2: A sudden vocal outburst 3: A blare of emotion 4: A means of making oneself heard. – Given the above definition it seemed an appropriate pairing. Raw, energetic, passionate, dark, and haunting. Unknown Pleasures washes over you like a cathartic scream from a tormented soul. The wine on the other hand is a bit more tame but still has a bold oak enhanced flavor that strikes a well balanced chord in this varietal featuring Syrah 25%, Cabernet 25%, Merlot 25%, Sangiovese 15%, Alicante 5%, Petit Verdot 5%. "Slow & Low" A 2013 Slow Press Cabernet Sauvignon & the 1977 release “Low” by David Bowie The description on this wine bottle states that it is “Rich, Smooth & Dark” and I would whole heartedly agree that this is a great description of the wine and the vinyl we picked for today’s pairing. The Slower the press, the better the wine. Oak barrel aged and the oak flavors ring through in this delicious Paso Robles Cab Sav. If you’re into woody cabs then this is well worth picking up a few bottles. It is utterly delicious! This particular release by Bowie is often identified as a Brian Eno production but he was really only a contributor on side B of this collection of works. The album itself was produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti. Let’s not let this ruin the famed Bowie/Eno Berlin trilogy since Eno still had a pretty big hand in at least half of the album. It is still one of my favorite Bowie records. "An Irish Moondance" Bushmills Irish Whiskey and Van Morrison Moondance Northern Ireland Mystic Tidings The distant homeland comes calling in this vinyl pairing made in Irish Heaven. All of the whiskey bottled under the Bushmills whiskey brand is produced at the Bushmills Distillery. A license to distill in the area was granted to Sir Thomas Phillipps in 1608 by King James 1. They are obviously doing something incredibly right to still be around all these hundreds of years later. I can only imagine the sweet sounds of this Van Morrison album may just as well transcend the ages just as easily. For now I’ll leave you with a traditional Irish toast: Here’s a toast to the roast that good fellowship lends, With the sparkle of beer and wine; May its sentiment always be deeper, my friends, Than the foam at the top of the stein. "Middle Tennessee Blunderbuss" A Black Label 8 year old George Dickel Sour Mash Whisky & 2012’s Blunderbuss by Jack White The lesser known Middle Tennessee sour mash due only to the fact that they don’t spend money on advertising like their sibling Jack, on the other side of the mountain does. This keeps the price of Dickel much more to my liking and the whisky itself is just as good if not better. So while I will give Jack my patronage when I’m out in a bar, when I stock my own everyday whisky at home it’s the 8 year old George that I reach for. Jack’s camp has been setup in the area for quite a few years now and I’d have to say I like what he’s doing with the place. Since Tennessee is my old stomping grounds, it’s nice to see some radical things coming out of Nashville again. Blunderbuss is a start to finish course in quality vintage sounds. The vinyl has an amazing warmth and sense of definition to it, due to the fact that it was made in the old school approach through pretty much the entire process of the production. Sit back, sip and enjoy, such quality seems to be getting rarer and harder to find these days. Let’s savor it while we can. It’s a decent enough Vodka with just a bit of bottom shelf gruff on it, so the Martini might not be the best option for this particular bottle but with such a cocktail one certainly gets the full picture of the Vodka. 1976 was quite a year for Rock n Roll and this album is one of many true staples that were created that year. "Tender & the Sweet" A 2013 Apothic Red & the 1988 release “Tender Prey” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds The wine was left behind at a party I hosted and I have to admit it is way to sweet for my tastes. However, if supple sweet red wine is your thing then the Apothic might be to your liking. As for the Nick Cave, well it’s about time we featured one of his masterpieces on this blog. It was hard to pick which album to go with but the color scheme won out on this one. Tender Prey is a start to finish spine tingling event. Nick’s writing has only gotten better with time. I’m sure we’ll find a way to get another one of his albums up in a pairing again soon.
